Packers Practice Roundup: July 29, 2022
Four players returned to practice on Friday.

So there was a practice today after all. I checked the Packers site, but I do not see how one would have known about it. It was a walk-through, so I will dispense with my usual format.
GENERAL:
Watkins, Ramsey, Walker and Byers are now practicing. No new injuries. Demovsky
Rasheed Walker and Randy Ramsey are both back. It’s Ramsay’s first on field work since injuring his ankle last summer. Was a core STer in 2020. 2) As Matt LaFleur suggested, Sammy Watkins is back at practice. Hodkiewicz
OLB Randy Ramsey said he tore 2 ankle ligaments and broke his fibula last camp, ending his season and keeping him out of practice until today. Ramsey said the ligaments took almost a year to heal. His ankle didn’t feel back to normal until about a month ago. Wood
That’s it for a one hour and 22 minute half-speed speed practice. Sammy Watkins caught a few passes, special teams worked on kickoff and kickoff return and ballhawk Rasul Douglas still managed to come up with an interception in jog through off Tyler Davis’ hands. Demovsky
First kickoff Gafford, Leavitt, Galiae, Carpenter, Amos, McDuffie, Barnes, Davis, Jean-Charles, Stokes, Brkic. [Kickoff coverage team]. 2) KR [Kick Return Team]: Barnes, Deguara, McDuffie, Jean-Charles, Douglas Davis, Dafney, Galeai Dillon, Winfree; Returner: Gafford. Amari Rodgers was 2nd returner. Leavitt and Walker were on second team also. 3) Some dispute on this. I had Douglas on first KR and Leavitt on second. Others had them flipped with Douglas standing on the side. 4) Aaron Jones among the players getting kick return reps. He’s back with Rico Gafford, Amari Rodgers, Romeo Doubs and Ishmael Hyman. Wood
Keisean Nixon helping lineup the KOR unit. A lot of knowledge there of Bisaccia’s unit. 2) Dallin Leavitt already in as a blocker on No 1 KR. Rico Gafford took first return, then Amari Rodgers. Hodkiewicz
LaFleur said the improvement in QB Jordan Love has been the operation in the huddle, at the line of scrimmage and in general. "He's got a great approach," LaFleur said. "Jordan has been through it for a couple years now." Silverstein
Matt LaFleur very complimentary of Rashan Gary, who’s entering his first camp as OLB1 in his fourth year. LaFleur said Gary would’ve had four sacks in practice yesterday if Packers were going full speed. Schneidman
La’Darius Hamilton and Tipa getting reps with the ones as well. I’m not sold that Hamilton isn’t the Packers' 3rd best edge. He’s got a chance. Herman
In jog through, the Packers showed very rare 4 DL look with Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry on ends, and Jarran Reed and TJ Slaton on interior. Hardly ever see that outside short yardage. A way to be stouter vs run with coverage on the back end. Two athletic ILBs help. Wood
2-4-5 nickel look today: Clark | Lowry Preston | Gary Campbell | Walker Douglas | Jaire | Stokes Amos | Savage. Herman
Wilborn, Shawn Davis, and Vernon Scott getting some reps with the ones on defense. Wouldn’t read too much into this. Teams are split into two groups and there’s some rotating going on. Again, just snails pace walkthroughs. Herman
Day 3 of reverts to Day 1 offensive line. First unit, left to right: Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Hanson, Newman. Spofford
Please note, in some instances it’s better to be getting a ton of snaps with the 2’s than rotational snaps with the 1s. Zach Tom, Devonte Wyatt, Krys Barnes, etc… get more reps that way. Herman
Coach Matt LaFleur said that rookie OL Zach Tom doesn't have typical left tackle size, but he said he's been impressed with his technique and athletic ability. Tom started on Thursday and had to go up against Rashan Gary, which was a good test for him. Silverstein
Matt LaFleur says he closed today's training camp practice is closed because it's just a "mental day" and wouldn't have been much for fans to watch. "There's not a lot of full-speed action. It's more jog through, above the neck." Wood
The Packers injury issues have gone too far. They are now affecting former players. Just today: Kyler Fackrell - IR Micah Hyde - carted off Lucas Patrick - injured at practice Taysom Hill - out injured. Herman
Falcons signed Henry Black, cut Brayden Lenius. Aaron Wilson [I have no comment. TGR]
Andy Herman wrote a nice article about today's closed practice that you can read here.
Reading the twitter account of Ryan Wood can give you a good idea of how practice went. You can find Ryan Wood by clicking here. I linked Andy Herman's twitter account yesterday. Both provide nice coverage of training camp.
My understanding is that there is a regular practice tomorrow, Saturday, July 30.

Nice to see Wilborn getting a look. It seems like RB certainly wants a good look at Gafford and not just as a returner.
I’m wondering when we will see Wyatt push through and it will be interesting to see if Walker (OT) can make any impact, though I think he was out all off season so may not be soon. Ramsey has time before pads go on to get back up to speed and show us why they like him so much.

DTs are rarely effective as rookies. A good example is Donald. He had 44 pressures as a rookie, has never had less than 89 the rest of his career.
Rookie DTs rarely produce more than expected. I'll be happy if he equals his snaps from last year at Georgia and makes a positive impact while he's on the field. In other words, can he be better than Lowry at 3T. Early days but I'd say an unequivocal yes.

True, they usually get blocked up by interior veteran O-linemen with superior technique and hand placement. Rookie DTs realize they can't consistently win with athleticism and strength alone as they did in college. I just want Wyatt to win enough that it prevents Clark from getting teamed all the time.

That’s true. It’s also true that we may not be seeing his packages yet. I’m not worried about him, just curious to see how they plan to get him out there as a rookie and give him a chance to make an impact.
On a side note, interesting to see Hamilton getting such prominence at OLB. Perhaps, like Hanson at guard, the team thinks more of him than we chatterers have?

Two words for you: Ben Braden.
Nothing to see here, yet.

Please reassure me that we aren’t going to risk guys like Jones or Watson or Douglas on return attempts.
Two weeks and we’ll be scrimmaging in SF.

Why not Watson? I doubt he is huge part of the offense this year, why not utilize his size and speed now, he returned at NDSU if I am not mistaken. Randall Cobb made an impact immediately as a rookie returner.

Leatherhead doesn't like anybody substantial playing STs. I do agree with him on Watson returning kickoffs. After the scope let his job be as easy as his role at NDSU. Besides, Doubs has got this.

Jones was far enough down the list to suggest probably just preparing as an in game emergency option. It looks like the early focus is on Gafford, Rodgers and Doubs.
Watson might get added to that when he’s better. To be honest, I’d rather neither he nor Doubs had to return (just concentrate on O), but of the two I’d rather Watson. I predict Doubs is going to play a lot of offensive snaps for a rookie this year if he stays healthy.

Rashan has been feeding me crow for three years. But, he's going to cook up a Thanksgiving Dinners worth of crownthis season and I'm gonna eat all that shit.

There were many Packer fans really unhappy after the Gary pick which I never fully understood. I had him on several mocks on here to the Packers high for which I received a lot of down votes and greif. I remember Ross Uglem basically laughed at one of my mocks having Gary going 12, he is telling how Gary isn't even the best rusher at Michigan, it was Chase Winovich, like I knew nothing about football. It almost felt like fans wanted him to fail early on, It was weird. Gary is developing into a true field tilting player.

It showed me how many people who claim expertise actually didn’t do their due diligence at all and were talking out of their behinds about his play/motor/character/intelligence. There are some I now treat with extreme caution as a result.
There was plenty of hard information on role/approach/effort/athleticism etc. out there to call that crap into question. That’s not to say Gary was a definite success, just that he wasn’t the man many portrayed him as and that was obvious to any who made even a casual effort to inquire.

I think fans were responding to the rumors about his work ethic, which turned out to be totally false. I definitely questioned the pick but felt much better about it once the story came out about how hard he worked that 1st summer.
It was a very good draft for defensive players taken in that area, all of them have been pretty successful.

You got it right, I felt from day one because this guy reminded me of Perry. Perry was from Michigan, gave the U the finger, went to USC and was steller because of who he played next too.
He was a bum for three years but that contract year, he did it all, then gave the Pack the finger and took the money.
I bet this is Garys last year in GB too. He will shine, take a better offer and adious suckers

Man, don't you ever get tired of the same tired trolls? You need some new material. Your Vikings have been so mediocre for so long all you can do is troll, you worthless waste of discussion. LEAVE NOW TROLL! Go back to cursing the weak kneed Purple flailers!
** If you haven't noticed yet, I despise this guy.

Um, so the Packers trade him?? Why would he shine this year and be gone, how is that a comparable to Nick Perry??
You realize Rashan Gary was a 1st round pick the Packers exercised a 5th year option on correct? He has 2 years left on his rookie deal, the Packers have 2 years of control. So give me a detailed description as to how after this season he will "take a better offer and say adios suckers," So the Packers trade Gary? I would really like to hear this.
Also, if you think Gute is just going to let Gary get to unrrestricted FA, you have not been paying attention to how the Packers operate. Players like Gary don't get to Free Agency.

Hey TGR, have you heard from BDU lately? We disagreed on a lot of non football stuff but I miss interacting with him, especially on the young guys.

Matt was smart in limiting players for the third practice. He commented in his presser that the third practice often results in injuries.
