Packers release WR Colby Pearson
-- The Green Bay Packers will have one less wide receiver fighting for a roster spot this summer.
On Wednesday, the team announced they had released Colby Pearson, an undrafted receiver out of BYU whose absence in OTAs this past month may have been the primary motivator behind his release.

A hamstring injury is reportedly what limited Pearson in the Packers' last two public OTA practices. His injury along with the fact that three other receivers were added via the draft back in April and Pearson had a pretty steep hill to climb in making the roster.
Pearson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Packers last June, then waived by the end of August. He was signed to the practice squad near the end of the season and eventually to a reserve/future contract with the team in January.
The Packers have yet to make a corresponding transaction -- if they choose to -- but Pearson's release leaves them with 88 players on their roster. 10 of them are receivers.
Mandatory minicamp begins in less than a week.

Most of us have to work two or even three years to make that much.

Can't get around the old minimum wage, Mortimer.

Anyone working minimum wage ($7.25 per hour) would have to work over 31 years to make $480,000.

It's good to be a football player, even at the lowest levels of the pay scale, right? I sure wouldn't mind trading places with them.

What's crazy is less than ten years ago the league minimum was $325k.
30% increase in league minimum is pretty astronomical. Good for them. Players generate big money for the league, as a rule don't have guaranteed contracts, and shorten their lives playing the game.
They should get everything they can.

if you take a 2,0 percent invlation rate in 10 years ist about 25 percent more. so its bassically not much more then the invlations rate......
far from astronomical

Fastmoving, I would agree, except most people's wages haven't kept up with inflation- certainly not the majority who make up the working class and poor unfortunately. Federal minimum wage being a prime example of serious lag behind inflation.

We're talking about almost a 50% increase here (1/2 x $325k = $163k; $163k + $325k = $488k), which I would love to see in my industry.
I agree with you: this is a success of the CBA. The lowest wage earners, many of whom have limited financial/earning options away from football (and you mention their short shelf lives), are benefitting.

You are absolutely correct on the math, I was lazy just thinking roughly 100k more, but yeah, my maths were horrible here.

The minimum was $310K in 2009 and 10 years later, in 2018, it is $480K. That's a 55% increase, or 4.47% compounded annually. Not too many occupations whose entry-level wage increased that much.
If you were a long snapper who got his job at the minimum of $310K in 2009 and are still on the team (no promotions, so to speak) in 2018, that long snapper now earns $1.015M. That is a 327% raise over 10 years, or 12.6% compounded annually.
