Then-Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker saw Stokes at a track meet and thought his speed would fit the Bulldogs' secondary quite nicely. He ran a 10.39-second 100-meter dash in a state meet and also won the 200 meters that year. Stokes was also an excellent all-purpose offensive weapon and defender who was named honorable mention Class AAAA in football as a senior. As a redshirt freshman, he was named Georgia's Co-Most Improved Defensive Player after starting three of the final four games and appearing in 13 contests overall (20 tackles, one for loss, nine pass breakups). Stokes started 13 of 14 games his sophomore season, recording 38 tackles, one sack and a team-high nine pass breakups. He was a second-team All-SEC selection in 2020 after leading his squad with four interceptions, returning two for scores. Stokes also broke up four passes and made 20 tackles in nine starts. He opted out of the team's bowl game to begin preparing for the NFL draft. He is nicknamed "Dirty Red" because of his reddish hair and freckles. -- by Chad Reuter from NFL.com
"From 2019 to 2020, Eric Stokes has certainly improved at being more opportunistic with regards to securing turnovers. He can mirror from a press position, but he can afford to clean up his technique--particularly his eye discipline in man coverage and getting 'grabby' at the top of the route. He has shown the ability to play in man or zone from a press and occasional off position, but he does not play to his high-level timed speed with his play. He's not a dynamic closer at the top of the route and lacks elite short-area, stop-and-start agility. COMMENTARY:
The Packers select an elite athlete with their first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. With 4.29 speed and a 39" vertical, Stokes gives Green Bay a young defensive back with a ton of athletic upside. His 9.37 RAS score is one of the best at his position in this class, and the 22-year-old former SEC corner possesses good ball skills and instincts in coverage. His size and athleticism certainly fit the mold of what the Packers look for in their defensive backs.

Something that I have often pointed out in the past KenEllis. A gigantic investment in the secondary over the last 7 or so years. Hopefully we now have two high quality starters at CB and the Packers start going elsewhere with premium picks.
Now CB is a premium position where the really good ones go pretty early......but the same applies to OT, Edge, top DLs and even WR, where there has been comparatively little draft investment (in rounds 1&2), at least little compared to half of the picks at DB, in the top two rounds over that time.

Not a criticism but a thought. What other position has an average of 5 guys on the field at once and often 6? (DBs - Safeties and CBs) None or one as OL as a whole could be considered
How about another critical position that has an average of 3 and often 4? (CBs)
What is the hardest position to get right in the NFL? (Cbs)
Not excuses just perspective....It could well be still too many picks to land what you need.
Heck four of the 8 became multi-year starters...

I would’ve picked someone else - maybe Barmore - but I’d prefer stokes over his teammate at corner Campbell, SAmuel at FSU who I saw get roasted by any decent receiver he covered, or the Cuse corner that I’ve never seen play. Maybe even would have preferred LOK the linebacker from ND. I don’t think any of the receivers left are first rounders and can get one later.

This guy and Joseph from Kentucky could stick with the 'Bama wide receivers. He moves much better than King. Do not play him in zone. He and Jaire can control the perimeter. Now where does King fit ?

I think that when Newsome2 went, Gute may have thought this was the next best option. I'm glad we selected a CB to play the outside, but we also could have missed an opportunity to trade down here. Stokes did have to defend against some tough receivers in his conference, though, but not a great run defender. Fast!-- will have no trouble making up ground.

The nfl is changing, the 250Ilb is a thing of the past. Look at Tampa Laveonte DAvid 6'1 233 and Devin White 6'0 237 coming out of college. Now, I agree 221 a bit light but not far off. Can he add 10 lbs to his frame is the question and maybe he can play at that level. He wouldn't be the first good ILB playing in the 220's.

Our Secondary just improved folks. Gute didn't burn any xtra picks, so let's consider this a blessing. We got a solid CB to boot who made a lot of good plays / INT's. Guessing WR next or possibly DL, we can only hope. Gute should be moving up next round or the 3rd, our fourth rounders are late picks. Still a lot of good players to sift.

Most of the scouting reports say terrific athlete, not yet a great corner. But has physical tools so hopefully with experience and coaching he'll pan out. Unfortunately, the scouting report sounds a lot like... Kevin King. JOK or Barimore are both far more highly regarded so I don't think Gute drafts BPA. Not a terrible pick though.
I honestly thought that the Packers were still negotiating with Denver for Rodgers and Denver took Surtain since he was the top corner and would still be interesting for the Packers.
Maybe still will happen.

Or the three teams that picked after the Packers. The Draft Industrial Complex is wrong as often at they are right. Using the collective wisdom of the DIC is not a compelling point for me.
How did nobody figure out that a 221 lb ILB would fall to the 2nd? Or maybe even farther than that? In hindsight, it seems rather obvious. He's way, way outside the size thresh holds to be a 3 down player. And that is setting aside the fact that ILB is not an impact position.
The DIC was so strong in their wrong-headed evaluation of that guy that people were advocating the Packer trade up to draft a guy with that pretty damn major red-flag that 32 of 32 teams heeded.

JOK is the ultimate risky pick. Talent but no obvious fit in the nfl world in most defenses. Will his talent translate in the different environment? Not a given. It only takes one team, but I’m not particularly shocked he was not any team’s first selection.
I wondered if Barry might be an exception, but given the choice, I favored Moehrig if we were going safety. I like the Stokes pick given how the draft fell.

I really don't follow college football that much never heard of Jaire Alexander quite frankly, they did great with him as long as the guy is closer to JA than KK I am good with it. Would like stud ILB sometime and slot receiver. Now that AR is showing his true colors guess its time to show some Love. AR you signed a big contract live up to it, stop being a pussy just cause you didn't get your way. This is a team hope they call your bluff you diva. Funny everyone was down on Brett Favre at least he just wanted to play in GB, TT had other ideas. What a difference Blood and guts to spineless and entitled. See ya!

I really LIKE the pick, but would have LOVED to get Barmore. Great defensive lineman help make defensive backs' jobs so much easier. If Gute can trade up for Barmore. This would be a great draft.

Barmore is a 2nd round talent. He has a big name because he played for Bama. His physical gifts are better than his play. That sometimes works out with coaching, but sometimes it doesn't. Some reports he isn't coachable. For 2021, I wanted someone who could stop the run, and that might not be Barmore. IDK. Barmore is in the same tier as Stokes.

Good point. I would rather have a lunch pail type of DT because the position requires toughness without the accolades. Similar to the interior blockers on offense. We will have some choices( McNeil, Tufele, or Shelvin) in the 3rd round who are hefty, nasty, and hungry to prove themselves.

The worst mistake to make us not being willing to write off a past mistake. Bad picks are inevitable. Move in and try to find better. The secondary is an area where upgrade is needed. Sensible to address it. I think Stokes will help, initially inside. Always have. He has outside potential but needs development, which is why he’s not in the top group but the second, where we drafted him.

They were not in need of a DL. We were. And he'll go top 5 today. Underclassmen go later. GB blew it by not grabbing him when they had the chance. So as much as Guty thinks he's got an upcoming Defense. He'll buy the correct pieces after Rodgers is gone. It didn't work for the Bears, Lions, or Vikings, and it won't work for the packers.

Stokes is okay. The last first-rounder went to MN at 23 (Darrisaw). I'd have taken Moehrig or an OT, but at 29 GB was in the next tier of prospects. I figured Stokes would be selected somewhere between 30 and 64.

He allowed a total of 16 completions and one TD in all ten games as a starter in 2020... Out of 299 snaps in which he was in coverage...and had 4 picks. Opposing QB's had a rating of 43.6 when throwing his way.
He plays CB in the SEC.
I don't know anything about that young man- I'm not going to tell you I watched the Georgia and Alabama games. I've never seen him play in my life. But let me ask you- how many completions out his 16 total on the season did he give up to Georgia and Alabama? Which team's WR chalked up the only TD he gave up all season? That conference is loaded with WR talent.
The kid may develop, the kid may not. But his college performance in a competitive conference with two+ years starting experience suggests he's probably not a complete bum. THe kid gave up 3 total TDs in his college career.

Was hoping for JOK or Moehrig but all 32 teams passed on them so what do I know. I certainly don't hate the choice of Stokes but kinda wished Gute traded down in that spot rather than take Stokes there.
Oh well guess I'm glad he didn't have to trade up for him. On to day 2.

I've said in the past, I don't mind a GM taking certain players but you need to play the draft game and project what other teams will do. In my opinion, GB over drafted Love, Deguara and Dillon last year and maybe Stokes this year. I have a feeling GB could have traded down and still have gotten Stokes and an extra pick.
Other than Jarie and Jenkins I'm not a fan of Guteys drafts. I'll see what Gary does this year, but I still would have preferred Burns.
And now to the major story of the day - Rodgers. I believe if they trade him this year they take a big cap hit (a TGR question). If he plays for GB in 2021 without assurances to his long-term future, how motivated will he be? Do we really want someone who's not all in as our QB this season?
If GB moves on from him and goes with Love consider GB in instant rebuild mode. As far as nascent QB's go, Fields for the Bears is regarded as the better prospect. And they have a better defense.
You may hate Rodgers for the predictable rift (you could have seen this coming a year ago at this time) I just don't see GB competing for the NFC crown much less the SB.
I would have drafted a possible replacement next year if I were Gutey, instead he's got a mess completely of his own making.

Lowers cap space by $1.15M if AR is traded now.
Trade after June 1, GB gains $16.05M in cap space for 2021.
$17.2M dead in 2022. Had a $39.852M cap # for 2022, so some space there.
It never made sense paying AR the roster bonus this year. Watch what happens or what the parties do, not what they say in a press conference.

Using this as a baseline is a mistake. Those pre-draft projections had people suggesting the Packers should trade up to get a Safety/ILB tweener that may not have a spot in the NFL game. 221 lb guys are Safeties in the NFL, not LBs. And people are still clinging to that projection even after 32 of 32 teams passed on him in real life.

Of course this is true. But it is highly unlikely Rodgers is going anywhere this year. I think he knows that. His only intent with pushing this out there yesterday was to seize GM powers by forcing the Packers to draft a WR. I'm glad they didn't cave to the diva crap he's pulling. I do agree that this rift will cause irreparable harm to the team and they won't be as good next year. That's what diva star players do, they harm the team in favor of their personal agenda.

Everybody knows it. He even admitted it. This team couldve used tee higgins last year. Maybe he catches that 2 pointer that eq dropped in the championship game. They also couldve used that 4th rnder they traded. You dont draft your franchise qbs replacement at 36 when you go 13 n 3 the year before. He needed one more season under lafleur. Look what happened. Maybe jordan love was a catalyst. But the problem is that hes also THE catalyst for this situation now. Tampa bay had 43 yr old tb12. Did they draft his replacement? No. They drafted trystan wirfs. Who held down toms left side against both smiths and gary for 4 quarters and then hoisted a lombardi 2 weeks later

Disagree that Gutey has a mess completely of his own making. Gutey drafted a player, which is within his job description. Rodger's is a baby who apparently feels threatened by Love.
As a Packers fan hearing Rodger's is upset is the best testament to date regarding Love and his talent. Love must have shown considerable talent in year one concerning Rodger's. Love even had better completion statistics in camp over Boyle last year who I was high on. If the Packers are going to trade Rodgers they had better charge a kings ransom.

I don't think that follows at all. Gute even said that Love made "limited progress" in TC. That seemed unnecessary and not a ringing endorsement, but due to a truncated TC and no preseason games, not surprising and certainly not depressing.

Truthfully, if Love plays like an average QB, I think we’re still pretty competitive in the division. If Rodgers doesn’t want to be part of the team, he shouldn’t be.

To end on a positive note, we get a premier speed guy with perhaps great overall athleticism from what may be the best conference in college football.
Let's hope Stokes is ready to take a big step forward in the next season or two; that he is a willing and able tackler; and that along with his speed, he is agile in coverage and can make quick bursts to close in on receivers.

I would have liked all three... OT, Elijah Moore, and a CB in round 1. Unfortunately could only take one. Stokes is not an exciting pick like Moore would have been, but neither would an OT, which I feel confident the Pack will take in round 2.
Hopefully one of those other quick type slot receivers are still available whether round 2 or 3 for the Packers to take.

I'm good with taking a cornerback in round one, but Stokes seems like too much of a project and too much of a question mark for someone selected in the first round.
That's why I'm wondering about whether picking an elite slot guy would have been better.
Are the cornerbacks that are likely to still be available to the Packers all that much less than Stokes?

Self-centered or smart business decision? If he was totally self centered would he volunteer his time to the Boys and Girls club? Sounds like he is a high character man, the type the Packers try to build their roster with.
At Pick 29, every pick is going to have issues to work on to become a starter in the NFL. He was 2nd team SEC as a sophmore and First team SEC as a Junior. He plays a premier position in the NFL. We have a need for a CB as King will be gone next year and the year after we have to sign Alexander. Yes, an OL would've also been a good pick but hard to argue with who the Packers chose.

All of the prospects most fans would probably name for Gute to take would be guys I'd be happy with at #37 to #45. The only guy I kind of liked more than the others is Moehrig, but even he is still in that same tier with Stokes and the remaining OTs.
37 - 45 = nine spots and there are probably 15 to 20 prospects I'd be fine with in that range.

So what if they are self centered. Hes just worried about his future. Its how players are now adays. Its a business. They are independent contractors. Would you risk your ass for free when you are already a potential first round pick? A shitload of players opted out completely. For the seaason. If a player is self centered thats totally fine. As long as the coaching staff can spot it and learn how to motivate that player the way he needs to be motivated.

I have long wondered why Rodgers reported anger at his parents and brother has lingered for so many years. He has been a great player and is a leader. But we all have flaws. Rodgers is arrogant and self absorbed. Most elite QBs are...but when those traits manifest into deeply held grudges and resentments that grow and never sniff forgiveness....it is not healthy.
Day one of a draft that 16 years ago saw Rodgers, a purported #1 pick seething in the green room, only to be rescued by the Pack, is now inserting himself into the 2021 draft with leaks about wanting to be traded from the team that made him one of the richest men on Earth. Grudges and resentments....over the 2005 draft and last year's #1 pick to probably replace him one day. As he himself was chosen to do do as a rookie.
It is not a good look.

I would not say Bart Starr was arrogant and self absorbed. He was a team player. That is why he won 5 championships. Rodgers is a diva and now a cancer. Time to have a new "team" quarterback. Send the diva packing packing in june and get something for him in a trade that will help the "team".

Sounds to me like an agent or aide overplaying his hand. Rodgers is typically more subtle. All this does for me is make taking a plausible QB last year look wise. If this is the Rodgers we do not see, insurance was wiser than it seems. In reality, I think this passes, but leaves a bad taste that may have echoes later.

I would still be glad if things worked out for the Packers and Rodgers to stay together somehow; however, I do wonder if this apparently terrible act by Rodgers on draft day makes it virtually impossible for him continue as the face of the franchise and leader of the team.
I don't know if this act of Rodgers is indicative of him as a significant problem for the Packers in the past -- but I do know that I've been dismissed here at CHTV for even raising concerns about his attitude.
With all the caution I've taken about not claiming to know what's going on with Rodgers, but with seemingly plenty of evidence that he may be a difficult person to deal with -- I'm surprised about getting such a cold reaction.
After all, the quarterback is the key position in the NFL. Wondering if our QB is totally on board with his coaches and teammates is a huge matter.
As I've written, no matter how huge the stats and how many the awards, a quarterback who isn't willing to fully cooperate with his coach and fully work with his teammates -- especially in the big moments of playoff games -- isn't going to get us a Super Bowl.

Some have given you a tough time. AR has an attitude and always did. I am not sure whether he sabotaged MM precisely, though someone needed to do it.
The thing is, I think it may be that QBs have to have a lot of resilience and self-confidence, and that can translate to ego and/or arrogance. Since 61 is going to think of how humble Bart Starr was, but Starr had tremendous mental discipline and toughness. And he had Lombardi who knew how to lead and how to let his QB lead.

Safest CB pick in the draft after the first two went off the board....his medical file is empty.
Great size and speed with improvement on the field every year. Coachable and hungry. Will start immediately at ST gunner/gunner defender or maybe returner and on D in the slot in nickel, dime. Has closing speed in zone that should make QBs hesitate.
Coach Gray will have fun coaching him and he will learn to emulate the fierce, feisty play of Alexander the Great. King will/should be motivated to up his game...and if not, his replacement has been hired.
I like this pick. Day one contributor. The D has gotten better today. One box checked off.
Board is actually shaping up nicely for the Pack. Round 2 move up?

Using the Jimmy Johnson trade chart, it takes GB's third-rounder (#92) to move from 62 to about 48.
I like the talent in the mid-second round: lots of them. I can't think of anyone I would use our 2nd and 3rd to move up for. [That means I have the next tier of prospects at 33 to about 59.]
Adding pick 135 or 142 would allow GB to move from 62 to about 58 if the trade chart holds true. Maybe for the right position player.
One of those 4th round picks allows GB to move from 92 to about 84. That's a maybe though I'd have to wait for the draft to flow and it is too early for me to comb through the big board and do maths.

Not wowed by the pick but not terribly disappointed by it. BG's preserved his mid-round picks, so I'm pleased at least with that...I don't expect that to be the case after tonight's picks.
Remember that there are two truths about how BG drafts:
1. he seems to be looking for very specific things which we often don't see or recognize, and...
2. his picks make stockholder's head explode.
Both will create a high degree of draft-centered entertainment for awhile.

RE: #1 - Gute goes for RAS. We all know this. Stokes checks that box in spades, and unlike the CB from VT or NW, he's not been frequently injured. We'll see.

People either seem to be laughing at Packers fans if they hate the team, or feeling bad for them if they don't care. What everyone doesn't realize is that we've been here before with a megalomaniac at QB. Rodgers is an employee. A great one. But an employee nonetheless. If he doesn't like the situation at his job, he can quit. But that doesn't change the fact that he's under contract and has no hard power here.
Has anyone realized that this kind of crap is one of the big reasons the Packers drafted a replacement in the first place? Besides, a slightly pissed off, or even massively pissed off, Aaron Rodgers isn't a bad thing on the field.

Bearmeat, you know exactly how I've felt about Rodgers for years now.
Supremely talented, but mark my words- he's given the organization fits for years now. From not taking coaching, one-man-show'ing it, divisive or passive aggressive comments in pressers.
After still exhibiting resistance to take coaching in 2019, I though his play in 2020 was a revelation and he came back in 100%. The good news is, his play was superb. The bad news is, I feel like a let myself be fooled into believing he was someone else than I already knew he was.
Remember this, Pack fans: all offseason long, Rodgers has been telling you that he wants to play his whole career in GB, WI, but he realized it was "not his decision" and "not in his hands." Well, guess what? He's full of shit, because he's the one decided to tell the Packers he wants out and where he wants to play.
I still have $20 says Rodgers will come out as a scientologist at some point in the near future. :) :)

He's a man, not a God. Just like all men, he has his foibles. He needs someone in his life telling him he's full of shit, and it seems like he's cast off those people. Plus, people at the top of their fields tend to be A-Holes. That drive is what makes them great, but it also makes them hard to deal with.
I'm happy he's been the QB of the Packers. But I won't cry when he's gone. Which looks like it will be next year. Or this year, if he actually tries to blow up the season. And I really don't think he'll go that far. He knows his brand in WI would suffer a ton and he has too many business interests, like being a part-owner of the Bucks... He's no dummy

I think the ship has sailed on moving him this year. But yesterday convinced me that if they can get a king's ransom for him after this year, it would not be a bad thing. He tainted himself permanently in my mind. He will never be able to erase it.
However, to paraphrase George Costanza, if the Broncos and him want to get nuts, let's get nuts. It starts with last year's 1 (Jerry Jeudy), this year's one (Patrick Surtain), 2022 #1 and #2. And maybe we'll need Cortland Sutton, KJ Hamler and Dalton Risner too, I iked all 3 of them in their draft years. Big price. But he's the reigning MVP. I have no doubt that Jeudy and Sutton are a big part of the reason he named the Broncos Giving him what he wanted while taking away the reason he wanted it would be poetic, IMO.

I'd sell him for 2 1st rounders and a 3rd or a useful vet next year. I think that's when it's going to happen. They need to see what Love will do in the preseason and throughout the year in practice, or if ARod goes down.

Just enough anger over the pick to really make me like it more. Stokes surely hits my benchmarks. First of foremost for this year, he cost the Packers just one pick. Also.... He's got the athletic profile to fit the positions he's playing. That position is an impact position. There is plenty of video of him playing against the best competition outside the NFL.
What I don't claim to have any credible way of judging is giving that video its proper weight. Or what kind of person he is. I leave that to the professionals and will have to trust the Packers did that right until we get to see him play for real.
