Packers sign Veteran QB Tyrod Taylor
Taylor brings plenty of veteran experience behind Jordan Love.
By PackerAaron

The Packers have added a veteran presence to their quarterback room, signing Tyrod Taylor in a move that signals both stability and intentional depth behind Jordan Love.
Taylor, a longtime NFL journeyman with starting experience with multiple teams, brings an ability to step in without the offense completely changing shape.
This signing also reflects a broader shift in Green Bay’s roster-building approach. After leaning heavily on youth over the last few seasons, Brian Gutekunst has shown a willingness this offseason to incorporate experienced veterans who can raise the floor of the roster. Taylor fits that mold perfectly.
It may not be a headline-grabbing move, but it’s a smart one.

Looks like they didn't really think Ridder was good enough to be the back up. Taylor is a pro back up who I like a lot better as well. Don't want him starting playoff games but capable of keeping the ship a float for a couple of weeks.

Very interesting. This has been rumored for a couple weeks, but I didn't think it would actually happen. He can play, especially if he's got a run game to play action from...he didn't have much in the way of pass-catchers or OL to work with in NY last season.
So now the question becomes: what's wrong with Ridder that a young guy who's started can't stick as a backup in the league?

You can only ride inaccurate and indecisive so far, I guess.

Like i wrote in the article when they signed him, the Packers were Ridders 6th team in 4+ years.
(Remember all the fan kool aid after he was signed, Malik's replacement).
Now we have Taylor...the Packers are his 6th team since 2018. so....idk.
i guess an upgrade, so there's that.

Concur BB - clearly Lafleur got a look at Ridder and decided he wasn't going to work out. Good get by Gute at least for 2027. Taylor is not a long term solution at backup (age) but he can cover the coming year. Hopefully LaFleur can develop McCord and Drones.

There never really is a long term solution at back up. Even the vets are always looking to make a little more and move around a lot more than years past.

The signing of a backup quarterback is a huge decision, as we saw with Malik Willis performing so well last season.
It's an art to secure the right guy as the second QB. He's not likely to be of the stature of a starter, yet has to be someone who can fill in and lead the team effectively in real games.

Maybe he's a young up-and-comer like Willis who somehow got lost along the way.
As we've seen in Sam D'Arnold, maybe he's of the caliber of a starting QB who needs some coaching up and the right opportunity.
Maybe he's not quite starter material, but has the ability and savvy of a Nick Foles to step up in a big game.

I'm familiar with the name, Tyrod Taylor, but my memory of him is really vague.
I look forward to the assessment of other fans here at CheeseheadTV.

Tyrod Taylor is 36 years old. If he makes the team, it will be a severe blow to their "youngest team in the league" status. He seems like a better bet than Desmond Ridder. What made me nervous about Ridder is that he was out of the league for most of last year. The Vikings didn't even keep him in spite of their disastrous QB situation. At least Taylor was with a team (the Jets) all year and actually played in some games.

Ridder cut. I'm kind of surprised the Packers signed someone this old, but if they were looking for experience and a low-turnover option, Taylor is it. But he has taken a lot of sacks in his career and is prone to holding the ball for a long time. He's still a threat to take off despite his advanced age.

He knows how to run the Demo-Derby offense, but not an effective passer when compared to Willis. He is a competitor and understands how to move the chains.

The backup QB for us just found stability. Good pickup for a short term solution.

so now we have 4 back up QBs but one of them has a starter salary and will start

I believe this is another very good move by the Packers. T. Taylor can win if required.
Meanwhile, the packers can develop the young QBs and we’ll see if they workout.
Go Packers!!!

Taylor can also mentor Drones - who is a similar dual threat QB - allowing the rookie at least one full season on the P.S. - which will be necessary for his development.

I love this signing of Tyrod Taylor as QB2. Especially after hearing Gannon’s comments about him from today’s presser.
“That’s a good player. Accurate passer. Tough to bring down.”
Good to have another proven vet in the house, and I expect more will be brought in soon at other need positions.

A good move for GB. I liked Ridder because of his starting experience, most backup QBs have very little. Taylor has twice as much and that's a big deal. He should provide stability and now the backup QB need that all the "Gurus" have been chirping about in articles can take a rest. The 3rd string battle will be interesting, McCord clearly has more arm talent than Drones, and Drones is clearly a better runner. I guess we will see how it all shakes out. QB need box is checked.
Backup blocking TE box-not checked. I haven't read any Dallas Cowboys-Luke Schoonmaker release/trade news today. He seems like a much better option than Musgrave. Maybe R J Maryland makes Musgrave a trade possibility anyway, he is faster and a better pass catching option for sure, which is all Musgrave does.
Backup RB-not checked. I just read an interesting article about the Seahawks now having way too many RBs after taking the Notre Dame RB in round one of the draft. They also signed the Falcons FA RB who is very good. Emmanuel Wilson might not be needed after all and could be waived. I wonder if GB would consider bringing him back? He only got $1.5 million from Seattle. I think that would be a cheap home run signing.
What else do we need? More OL depth for sure. Maybe another vet CB would be nice insurance.

Solid move by Gute to sign Taylor. He'll be a solid backup for Love. The Packers now have their Backup QB situation settled.
It would be great if we can add a backup TE and a backup RB before the regular season. We'll see what else Gute has up his sleeve. Thanks, Since '61

Gute has a plan.
I will say this about Taylor, you don't last 15 years in this league without something to offer.
But at 36.....we'll see how it flashes out.
Like most others, a choice for a short term solution.
