Packers signing safety Xavier McKinney

The former second round pick is coming off his best season.

From NFL Network:

McKinney, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, started all 17 games in 2023, tallying 116 tackles (78 solo), three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.

McKinney reportedly gets $25M in year one for Green Bay.

Packers getting younger by the hour. Bakhtiari out. Jones out. Jones is 4 years older than Jacobs. Runyan /Savage gone.

Are we better though? Defense maybe? Offense. Don’t know? Plenty of moves left.

GB was already the youngest team in the league, now they're just rubbing it in everyone else's face.

Minor celebration going on here! Wow, some were saying he might get $17-18 million, which I thought to be a bit high, but if that's the market...and we are desperate for a quality starting safety that can excel in our new defense, than go for it. Give credit to Gute for pulling the trigger and not settling for the second-rate leftovers.

This was a bold move. If Mckinney lives up to his billing and stays healthy, this is going to be a great signing.

We still need a safety in the draft - the 3rd round looks like the spot unless the Packers shell out for Tyler Nubin in round 2.

Bullock, Bullard, Bishop, Hicks, are all solid options in round thee. Any one of those paired with McKinney should improve the safety position a lot.

I've said elsewhere that the Packers are often in on conversations about players but their offer is often a lowball offer and the player goes to another team. That will mean they miss out on some players but seldom make bad mistakes. However, for players that they like a lot, they WILL pay market value and that is the case with McKinney.

As an aside the Packers will almost certainly get a RB in this draft as well. I like the idea of taking a chance on Jonathon Brooks (recovering from an ACL), now we have a starter signed in Jacobs. I expect one to be added somewhere in rounds 3-5. Solid choices (imo) are: Marshawn Lloyd, Blake Corum, Jaylen Wright or Dylan Laube.

Two significant acquisitions already..............which is one more than I expected.

I'm kind of interested in what deal Aaron Jones will get from another team ?

Oh happy day. I needed some good news after hearing about Jones. This completely changes our draft strategy and now we can focus on the LB positions and offensive line! Add a CB in the mix and a mid round RB and we've got ourselves an extremely competitive team.

This doesn't change draft strategy all that much.

Why ? We still need another safety (and another RB). I expect both to be addressed in rounds 3-5.

We essentially swapped Jones for Jacobs. That is one RB. We still have a critical need for at least one other RB if not two. We need to draft two RBs. preferably the two best available in the draft. Someone like Trey Benson (lighting) second round and Braelen Allen(thunder) for a big back in the third. A stable of three premier RBs is just what the doctor ordered. Oh, in the first round draft the best ILB in the draft! Most feel Edgerin Cooper is number one but Payton Wilson (thanks to 4.4 speed) is moving up fast. 0-line can be addressed in either the second or third round. Again, see how the draft falls. Gute I am sure has a strategy with contingencies all planned out.

So maybe the Packers won't need to draft four safeties after all. It will be interesting to watch a safety who actually hits a dude instead of giving them a gentle pat on the ass...

Expect more Busts and wasted picks.
Trying to Buy a Super bowl never works.

"Somebody needs to stop Gute."

Stop him from what? Making the team better? This has been probably the fastest and most impressive "rebuild" in recent memory. Moving on from Rodgers, Davante, Crosby, et. al. and pretty much not missing a beat, while being the youngest team since 1970 to go on to win a playoff game. And they just incredibly got younger and better.

Pray tell...who would you like to replace Gute with? This should be interesting if you actually respond.

Savage has at times been great and at times not so great . He was injured much of last season. He was fantastic in the Dallas game. I wish they would renegotiate his contract and keep him at least for depth. I don't understand the Savage bashing. No pun intended. Perhaps the new DC could harvest his best. Why would anyone assume that a third or fourth round safety is going to be better than Savage?

Certainly just upgraded the secondary although at $17mm AAV the Packers also paid top price to do so. I hope the Packers finally have a defense and a DC that can stop somebody in the fourth quarter when it matters.

Stunned about Aaron Jones although when he signed Rosenhaus to be his agent I was more than a little concerned. I wish Jones and Bakhtiari the very best for their futures. Great players and great Packers who represented the franchise and themselves very well.

25M upfront, is strong coin for this guy. A.Jones was gone as soon as they wanted a refi. He may end up on Miami. Two more RBs from this draft. Irving with a three pick to get the scat back who breaks fast in wide zone. Jacobs has to stay healthy. Definitely a step up from Dillon.

Way to go, Gute! No rest for the wicked! I totally trust his decisions. There was a lot of crabbing when he signed Jordan and lo and behold, it looks like Gute's instincts were spot on. Hopefully Xavier will be a star in our defensive backfield.

6'-0 and 205 lbs images a free safety, not a Rover LB. 9 picks since 2020. Savage 9 Ints in Five Years. 4.5 type of guy. Saban teaches the fundamentals of secondary play and this guy is smart. Please do not tell me you wanted Savage for phase Three.

I didn't want savage.
Amos slowed and so
did savage.
But neither ran a 4.6 forty
at the combine like this guy.
I don't see value in signing a guy
for 25 mil. in year 1.

You know what happened when Woodson slowed.
Take your leap of faith all you want.
The draft was the Best way to go.
