Packers Snap Counts Versus The Rams: Week 15

The Packers handle an outmanned Los Angeles Rams team.

The Packers signed Patrick Taylor to the 53-man roster and released Sammy Watkins to make room.  Watkins was a football player who was willing and able to do the dirty work.  As a vested veteran, Watkins can make a claim for his remaining unpaid base salary but he will not earn his game active bonuses.  The Packers did not elevate anyone from the Practice Squad for the game.

The healthy inactive players were Shemar Jean-Charles, Jonathan Ford, and Krys Barnes.  Caleb Jones was also inactive, though he still might not be 100% after contracting mono.  David Bakhtiari was also inactive.  Jordan Love, Luke Tenuta, and Rasheed Walker were active but did not play.

The Packers were able to run the ball at will.  Aaron Jones had 17 carries for 90 yards (5.3 average) while A. J. Dillon got 11 carries and gained 36 yards (3.3 yard average) but with two touchdowns.  They did it against a defensive line that is not particularly good.  DE Greg Gaines is a fourth round pick making $2.5M on a PPE deal.  Jonah Williams (UDFA) makes $825K, has only played 167 snaps this year and is terrible.  Mike Hoecht is another UDFA making $825K who has played less than 300 snaps over the last two seasons and is also pretty bad.  Bobby Brown is a 2021 fourth-round pick who had played 71 snaps in his career prior to this game.  Earnest Brown played just 2 snaps this year heading into today's game since he is on the PS.  Gaines (69 snaps), Williams(66), Hoecht (55), and Bobby Brown (45) and Earnest Brown (11) played 246 snaps against the Packers.  That is not a murderer's row.  A'Shawn Robinson and Aaron Donald were out injured.  The Packers handled the opposing defensive line and should have.

The pass protection was okay.  Rodgers was hit 6 times and sacked 3 times.  Leonard Floyd, working mostly against Nijman, had 3 QB hits, 2 sacks, and 2 tackles for loss.  Rodgers completed 22 of 30 attempts for 229 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.  Doubs led the Packers with 55 receiving yards despite playing just 32% of snaps, while Watson had 46 yards, all in the second half.  Cobb contributed 32 and Big Dog leaked out after blocking to catch a short pass and rumble for 10 yards.  Dillon and Jones had 71 receiving yards.

The fantasy article from Pro Football Focus can be interesting.  Here are PFF's numbers:

Player Snaps Routes Target Rec Yds Yd/rte
Lazard 67 32 2 1 7 0.22
Watson 62 31 6 4 46 1.48
Cobb 29 17 4 3 32 1.88
Doubs 23 10 5 5 55 5.50
Toure 2 0 0 0 0 0
Jones 40 18 5 4 36 2.00
Dillon 26 13 3 3 35 2.69
Tonyan 37 15 2 1 4 0.27
Deguara 20 10 0 0 0 0
Lewis 29 7 1 1 14 2.00
Davis 11 0 0 0 0 0
Taylor 9 2 0 0 0 0

PFF noted that Doubs was the 4th wide receiver and that he usually rotated in for Cobb when the Packers played 11 personnel.  PFF also noted that prior to this game, Watson averaged 2.77 yards per route from the slot and 2.11 yards/route when wide.  I would have liked to see Toure get a few more snaps, particularly in this type of game.

The defense held the Rams to 12 points.  Preston Smith had a great day working mostly against RT Rob Havenstein.  Smith finished with 4 quarterback hits, 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss.  Enagbare added a sack and a tackle for loss working mostly against Ty Nsekhe, who seems like an interesting player.  Nsekhe has been in the league since 2012, gets good PFF grades, but has been a part-time player his whole career.  Justin Hollins continues to impress.  Hollins had half of a sack and 2 tackles in 26 snaps.

Kenny Clark made more plays today, finishing with 2 tackles with a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.  Wyatt played well in just 9 snaps, finishing with a half sack, a QB hit, and 2 tackles.  Reed finished with one solo tackle.  Lowry had no statistics.  Quay Walker also had a nice game, and even was blitzed once or twice.  Walker finished with 5 solo tackles, one sack and a tackle for loss to go with two passes defended.  Rasul Douglas led the team with 6 tackles, and he had an interception.  He was up and down a little.  Amos made some nice plays but also had a pass interference penalty.

Darnell Savage got just one snap while playing 9 ST snaps.  It remains to be seen if they was due to his recent injury.  Jonathan Garvin also could not get on the field except on special teams.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Keisean Nixon returned two punts for 36 yards and 3 kickoffs for 95 yards, including a 52-yarder.  He had another called back due to a dubious holding call on Garvin.  The coverage teams allowed just a 19.8 yard average on 5 kickoff returns and one 8 yard punt return, though it was on a pooch punt.  Crosby made a 34 yard field goal and hit three extra points without incident.

The writing is on the wall for the safeties, Edge, and TEs. Hollins count surprised me.

PFF noted that OG Matt Scura (a street free agent making the $1.035M minimum), OG Oday Aboushi (another street free agent in the league since 2012 who is making his minimum of $1.12M) and OC Coleman Shelton (UDFA in 2018, now an RFA in 2022, who makes $1.75M) did not allow a pressure. I just noticed how I didn't recognize so many names in the snap counts. LAR is playing with a bunch of very young players because their expensive players are on IR.

Thanks, TGR. Always enjoy your snap counts article.

Don't remember seeing Savage at all and thought he must still be injured but he got in for one play. Do you know if it was prevent before the end of the half or something?

Can't understand why Wyatt didn't play more when the Rams started cutting up with the running. He showed well. At least Lowery only played 11 snaps. Although poor Kenny Clark was getting doubled the whole time, even when they weren't just using two down linemen. Why do they keep playing that when they were getting gashed up front? Poor showing against practice squad players. Miami will be healthier I bet.

Clearly the game plan was to go pure nickel this week with the Rams no real consistent threat to run the ball. I'll echo the Wyatt sentiment, but when your opposition only runs 50 plays, and the score doesn't blow up, it's hard to see the rotations changing that much for a week or two....which is why they need to start changing the fundamental depth chart. Reed won't be back. It's unlikely that Lowry will be back.

Always my first read on the morning after a game TGR - thanks for the snap counts!

The Packers really didn't play many DL last night - an average of 2.0 DL per play is really low. I thought Wyatt maybe played his best game as a Packer in limited snaps. The fact that Savage played 9 special team's snaps indicates he is healthy. Which makes his one snap as a safety really glaring. He has truly played his way off the field. Unfortunate as that means the Packers will be looking for more safety help in next year's draft.

I suspect Doubs was on a pitch count last night which would account for fewer snaps than Cobb. Doubs was effective whenever he was in there. He has great short area quickness and just breaks defenders off at the ankles as well as just snatches the ball out of the air with his hands. He is going to be a really good one.

Packers shying away from the 2-RB sets, but using the TEs a little more after a couple weeks where 11 personnel seemed to be winning out again.

S position is such a mess going forward. Rudy Ford isn't the answer. Abram was a fishing expedition that didn't pan out. Packers will be investing heavily in the position this off-season, probably through the draft.

Had the feeling that Enagbare was going to be a valuable 5th when they took him, and he's showing well with added snaps. He might not be a star, but he's going to be a good depth piece and spot starter going forward. Hollins has the look of a guy they might try to retain into 2023 on a low money deal given Gary will likely be shelved/limited into 2023, and might also invest there in the draft. If--with Gary shelved--Garvin can't get on the field, that's telling.

Thanks, TGR!

Hey Dobber, Why don’t you think Enagbare won’t be a full time starter in this league? I see real potential and was thought of being a much higher draft pick. Can’t remember why he dropped. I’m thinking he will be a starter with a chance to be special player. He can protect the edge and pressure the QB.

Like you Murf, I see Enagbare as a potential starter and possible replacement for Preston Smith when the time comes. Enagbare needs to continue to develop and make at least a small second year jump (pass coverage), but his rookie season has potential written all over it.

Enagbare tested slow in the 40. He ran it twice and the second time was even slower than his first test. After that he dropped like a rock in the draft order. However, his production at SC was always good.

I don't think the 40 matters at all for Edge guys. There were questions about his bend before the draft and he ran a pretty average 3-cone. I think that's what dropped him. For Edge guys I'd say the 10 yard split, the 3-cone and the jumps are the most important tests.

With Preston, Enagbare, Hollins and a rehabbing Gary, the Packers will be fine at OLB next year. The black hole and draft choice eater will be safety. Amos is aging and will be a free agent, Savage is declining, and Ford is a backup. Ouch!

Hollins >> Garvin.

Ford can return as an ST guy at his minimum base salary. No better than a deep reserve at safety.

I had hoped for more from Enagbare against Nsekhe. Then I looked at Nsekhe and couldn't figure that guy out. 11th season but his pay is based on 4 credited seasons - meaning he was only active for at least 2 games in four of the prior 10 years. He can't get snaps but his PFF grades are mostly green.

I have concluded that Enagbare belongs in the NFL, and probably his floor is a backup, or rotational OLB and not hanging on based on STs or potential. That is good for a 5th rounder. There is a chance that he can be substantially more than that. It probably depends on him, coaching and scheme.

Great games from Preston and Walker. Campbell was competent.

Love to see a game where Rodgers is spreading the ball around like this. I always thought that pre-Adams days that was one of his specialties. Surprised Watson and Lazard didn’t get thrown to more but I guess that’s what happens when you spread the ball around.

Two targets for Lazard.

One was a short completion. The other was when he was open and Rodgers threw it to the safety.

Then there were no more balls in Lazard’s direction.

A coincidence? I don’t think so.

Thanks TGR. Maybe when the season is wrapped up you can give us a breakdown of how much Taylor actually made in comparison to a guy that sat on the PS all year. Somebody said they feel sorry for him for all the bouncing back and forth he's done but I don't, I bet he's made almost triple what 18 weeks on the PS would have paid him, or at least he will by the end of the year.

He makes an additional $34,333 every time he gets elevated (or signed to the roster). He has played in 11 games, so his elevations and signings have garnered an extra $377,666 so far this year, over his PS base salary of $207K. He will be eligible for that pot of money the NFL disburses to players every year, though his snaps are low enough that he might not see much. No one seems to know the formula for that pot (which does not count against the salary cap).

He is close to tripling his pay. PS = $207K. I'd estimate his cash earnings at $377K plus $172K = $549K. He will probably make $45K per week over the remaining 3 weeks to reach $684K, more than triple the amount a PS only guy would earn.

PFF grades per Zach Kruse:

TOP 5 offense/defense:
Doubs (89.1), Dillon (88.1), Jenkins (80.1), Runyan (73.8), AR (67.7)
Walker (87.0), Wyatt (77.7), Smith (75.8), Clark (69.5), Nixon (69.2).

Yeah, I don't think GB is getting Nixon back for his minimum. One of Clark's better days this year. It wouldn't have been a good day a few years ago for him. Pay isn't in line with performance.

Bottom 5 Offense/Defense:
Lazard (49.5), Deguara (51.6), Nijman (52.6), Tonyan (53.3) Davis (58.3).
Slaton (35.5), Lowry (47.6), Enagbare (47.8), Ford (52.7), Alexander (53).

Guys who don't catch passes are not going to do that well. Deguara's blocking supposedly was poor. IDK.

Fans have a narrative about Nijman being good. He isn't. He is okay and still has upside. Leonard Floyd ate him alive. The TE room for 2023 is a mess. Even re-signing Tonyan only makes it marginal.

No jump from Slaton. Bad grade for Enagbare. I know I was disappointed with his performance but this seems harsh.

I thought Clark played better than PFF gave him credit for but if you take into account who he played against that would be a pretty stiff curve. I said after the SB last year that OL would be where the cracks started to show after Wentworth retired. I think they would have struggled a bit even if healthy and they're far from that. Be interesting to see how they try and add talent there. The F them picks guy might have angered the football gods.
