Packers Snap Counts: Week 13 vs. The Dolphins
Jeff Hafley plans a beautiful defensive scheme to help the Packers defeat the Dolphins.

Once again the Packers did not elevate anyone from the Practice Squad. Minnesota earlier in the week offered a roster spot to ILB Jamin Davis, and he signed a contract with the Vikings. The Packers had an open roster spot so they could have matched Minnesota's offer. Perhaps they did - all we know is that Davis is now with the Vikings. Jaire Alexander, Edgerrin Cooper, and Romeo Doubs were inactive due to injury. OG Jacob Monk was once again a healthy scratch. QB Malik Willis and TE John FitzPatrick did not play.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:
| Player | Snaps | % | ST |
| Walker | 54 | 100 | 6/25% |
| Rhyan | 54 | 100 | 6/25% |
| Tom | 54 | 100 | 6/25% |
| Myers | 54 | 100 | |
| Jenkins | 54 | 100 | |
| Telfort | 6/25% | ||
| Glover | 6/25% | ||
| Dillard | 6/25% |
Once again the offensive line was very good with their pass blocking. The line allowed no sacks and just 3 quarterback hits. The run blocking was adequate. At least there were very few negative run plays. The were several explosive runs, as well. Most of the runs consisted of a lot of very hard running through modest holes. Emanuel Wilson, Chris Brooks, and Jaylen Reed gained 71 yards on 6 carries. Josh Jacobs gained 43 yards on 19 carries for a 2.26-yard average, with 1 touchdown and a long run of 11 yards.
RUNNING BACKS:
| Players | Snaps | % | STs |
| Jacobs | 42 | 78 | 1/4% |
| Brooks | 15 | 28 | 8/33% |
| Wilson | 4 | 7 |
The Packers really leaned on Josh Jacobs this week. He got 78% of the snaps this week versus the 53% he got last week. Brooks got a lot more playing time than Wilson although the carries were similar. Brooks gained 28 yards on 3 carries (9.33-yard average) and Wilson gained 20 on 2 carries with a long of 15. Jacobs caught all 4 of his targets for a whopping 74 yards, including a 49-yarder which set up a field goal. Brooks caught passes of 5 yards and minus 4.
TIGHT ENDS:
| Player | Snaps | % | ST |
| Kraft | 49 | 91 | 11/46% |
| Sims | 15 | 28 | 3/12% |
| Fitzpatrick | DNP |
Kraft 6 of his 7 targets for 78 yards with a long of 17. Kraft continues to gain a lot of yards after the catch and his blocking has improved. SFitzPatrick, after getting to play 19 percent of the snaps last week did not play, not even on special teams.
QUARTERBACKS:
| Player | Snaps | % | ST |
| Love | 54 | 100 | |
| Willis | DNP |
Love completed 21 of 28 passes (72.4%) for 274 yards (9.79 yards/attempt) and 2 touchdowns. He had a passer rating of 129.2. Love nice was accurate and did well when he was pressured. I thought he had several excellent throws into tight windows. There were a couple of passes where the defensive back tried to make a play on Love's pass but I would not describe those passes as turnover worthy. 4 of Love's passes were broken up.
WIDE RECEIVERS:
| Player | Snaps | % | ST |
| Watson | 51 | 94 | |
| Wicks | 48 | 89 | 1/4% |
| Reed | 36 | 67 | 4/17% |
| Melton | 9 | 17 | 7/29% |
| Heath | 1 | 2 | 3/12% |
With Doubs out, the Packers decided to lean on their top receivers rather than give the receivers at the end of the rotation more snaps. Watson played 94% of the snaps with Wicks getting a whopping 89% of the snaps, and that is after he flat out dropped his first target. Watson caught 2 of his 4 passes for 67 yards with a long of 46. Watson clearly give the Packers a legitimate deep threat. On one deep pass, Love threw it a little short; the defensive back bumped into Watson for what could have been defensive pass interference. Watson looks a little iffy when he tries to catch over-the-shoulder passes, so perhaps that awkwardness is why the officials decided not to throw a flag.
Wicks caught 4 of his 5 targets for 30 yards with a long of 10. Reed caught 3 of his 6 targets for 24 yards with a long of 12, but 2 of his receptions were for touchdowns. Melton and Heath had no targets. Melton did not recover the muffed punt but he was in the mix.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:
| Player | Snaps | % | ST |
| Clark | 45 | 63 | |
| Wyatt | 28 | 39 | 2/8% |
| Slaton | 26 | 37 | 7/29% |
| Brooks | 26 | 37 | 4/17% |
| Wooden | 17 | 24 | 1/4% |
| Gary | 43 | 61 | |
| Enagbare | 43 | 61 | 8/33% |
| Van Ness | 22 | 31 | 11/46% |
| Cox | 20 | 28 | 6/25% |
| Mosby | 14 | 20 | 12/50% |
The Packers held Miami to 14 rushing yards on 7 carries in the first half. And that is despite runds of 13, 9 and 3 yards by Miami in the first half. That led to a number of negative plays, which put Miami in difficult down and distance situations. Miami committed a lot of dumb penalties to further shoot themselves in the foot. The Packers would be credited with 9 tackles for loss. For the game, the Packers held Miami to 39 yards on 14 carries, a 2.79-yard average. The Packers had their share of dumb penalties; they lined up offside multiple times and took sacks off the board due to their own penalties. Gary and Clark went back to playing a lot of snaps. Wooden went from 43% of snaps to 24%.
Clark had 1 solo tackle, a sack and a quarterback hit. Wyatt had an assisted tackle and Brooks had no tackles and he batted down a pass. Slaton had no statistics other than an offside penalty. Enagbare had 5 tackles (4 solo) and a sack. He also had a sack wiped out when Gary lined up in the neutral zone. Gary had 1 solo tackle and a quarterback hit. Van Ness had 2 solo tackles, 1 hustle sack, and 2 tackles for loss. Cox had 2 tackles (1 solo) and a sack. Mosby had 1 solo tackle, a tackle for loss when he did not bite on the inside fake.
LINEBACKERS:
| Walker | 71 | 100 | 3/12% |
| McDuffie | 63 | 89 | |
| Wilson | 32 | 45 | 18/75% |
| Hopper | 12/50% |
Green Bay took McDuffie off of special teams, probably due to the lack of available linebackers, though they kept Eric Wilson on teams. Hopper, who got 7 snaps last week, played only on special teams this week. The Packers appeared to be dropping back into a lot of zone with a deep drop for the linebackers. They seemed to be trying to clog the middle so as to stop Tyreek Hill (and Waddle) from catching intermediate crossers in space.
They did a good job on Hill and Waddle for the most part, though it meant that TE Jonnu Smith was usually open for a check down in the middle of the field on a pretty regular basis. Smith caught 10 of 11 targets for 113 yards. It might turn out that some entity like PFF gives one or several of the linebackers terrible coverage grades, but any grades should be ignored. The plan was to allow the catch over the middle and rally to the ball to limit the gain. Miami is also good at setting up screens. RB Achane caught 8 of 9 passes for 56 yards with a long of 14. When it mattered most, WRs Tyreek Hill, Waddle, Odell Beckh8am and Washington combined for 3 receptions on 6 targets for 18 yards in the first half while the Packers built a big lead.
And rally to the ball they did. McDuffie and Walker each had 10 total tackles (7 and 6 solo, respectively). Walker had 2 tackles for loss and a sack, while McDuffie had a pass defensed, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss, and a big hit that continues to set the tone for physicality for this team. Eric Wilson had 3 tackles (1 solo).
SECONDARY:
| McKinney | 71 | 100 | 8/33% |
| Nixon | 71 | 100 | 5/21% |
| Bullard | 66 | 93 | 8/33% |
| Ev Williams | 52 | 73 | 7/29% |
| Stokes | 36 | 51 | 1/17% |
| Valentine | 35 | 49 | 6/25% |
| Anderson | 17/71% | ||
| Rochell | 13/54% | ||
| Olapado | 7/29% | ||
| Ballentine | 1/4% |
McKinney had 9 tackles (7 solo) and Williams added 7 tackles (3 solo). Bullard had 3 tackles (2 solo). The Packers only allowed 1 explosive play, a 30-yard reception by Tyreek Hill in the second half. Miami had a long of 13 on the ground.
Nixon had 6 solo tackles and a pass break up in what looked like a very good performance watching it on television. Stokes and Valentine split the snaps at the other cornerback spot, with Stokes posting 2 solo tackles and Valentine getting 2 tackles (1 solo). The Packers went back to a tight rotation at safety and cornerback as only the top 6 players got defensive snaps. After shutting down the wide receivers in the first half, things loosened up a bit. Tua completed 22 of 27 passes in the second half and finished with 365 passing yards for the game. Tagovailoa completed 80.4% of his passes, which would be more impressive if so many of them had not been little more than check downs and had the Dolphins managed more than a single explosive play. Allowing just 17 points is an excellent result, espcially since Miami had been averaging 25 points per game in games started by Tagolovailo this year.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
McManus made all 6 of his kicks. Whelan got an errant long snap down and averaged 43 yards per punt, 41.74 yards net.
RB: 1.13
TE: 1.19
WR: 2.69

I have been suggesting Valentine over Stokes for a while now, and even Valentine over Nixon. I might have eat crow as to Keisean Nixon. I need to get All-22 but I did not see much to complain about in Stokes' play.
Quay had another pretty good game. I had been saying he is not as bad as many fans assert, something around an average starter. He has strung a couple of pretty good games together now. His 5th year option is for about $16M so he would have to string more good games, and probably better games, in order to make me think he might be worth exercising his option.
The offense is a bit herky jerky. They get some explosive plays. The run game is very inconsistent and Jacobs is making the run blocking look better than it is.
Not sure where the pass rush came from but keep it coming. Not really sure where the run defense came from - 14 yards on 7 carries does not happen often.

Quay had the quietest 10 tackles I can remember but has been more noticeable in a good way around the LOS and the splash plays are starting to appear. A couple weeks ago I mentioned Wilson had 7 TFLs compared to Quay's 4 in half the snaps but they're probably even now.
Speaking of Wilson, Ingold had a crushing block on him on one of the Dolphins long runs. Reminded me that it would be fun to have a true FB on the Packers, especially with Jacobs on the team.

They could have bagged him as an UDFA coming out of Badgerland. He was effective right off the bat for Gruden and again, they did not make an offer when he hit free agency. I am a firm believer in the Fullback position, especially in the WCO during a playoff run.

A lot of Packer fans get on McDuffie for being slow and he is mostly ineffective in the deep passing game but for a guy that was questionable to play with an ankle injury on a short turnaround his sure tackling showed up big time. Not a priority resigning but a mid level vet you'd like to keep if the price is right this off-season. More games like last night and it won't be.
Wyatt and Brooks have largely disappeared the last few weeks as pass rushers and given that Clark draws the double teams that's a bit concerning. The way Wyatt started the season his 5th year option was a lock but I'd say it's doubtful at this point. The Packers have a better handle on how his high ankle sprain is effecting him and those are usually a season long thing but just not seeing much from him when I focus on him. Brooks hasn't been very visible as a rusher either. I think it was a mistake to keep ahold over from the last staff to teach the interior DL the new techniques but they're going to need more from those guys next week. Nice to see Clark get off the schneid.
Wicks continues to drop easy ones but his effort on that nine yard gain and his blocking in the running game is a good enough reason to let him play through it for me.
Thanks for these TGR.

I think your call on the defensive strategy in the second half is spot on. For the most part we shut down their receivers on the outside. Nearly everything aggressive tried by Tua was straight down the middle. I think that says something positive about the corners. It could be a direct result of what seemed like tighter coverage live too, but Stokes seemed to have a good day. Perhaps signs of mental recovery? I want to look at Bullard on rewatch to see what he was doing. Surprisingly few stats given how we were attacked.
Aside from the encroachment penalties, which are baffling, I thought the front did pretty well in getting Tua moving while essentially killing the run. Tua gets the ball out faster than any other QB on average, so that’s not easy to do. Our OL pass blocked well, but the run blocking was poor again. I fear that, despite Jacobs, that could be the difference when it matters as it’s not only yards but keeping drives ticking over.
It frustrates me that we use Wilson so little as he can get outside as well as hard yards. Brooks had a good game but I’d rather see Wilson more when Jacobs is spelled. Particularly later on when our offense was struggling to close things out.

I don't recall if they said it on the broadcast or I heard it on the radio yesterday but Brooks has the 2nd highest pass blocking grade among RBs from PFF. They probably figure with Brooks in there the threat of the pass makes running easier.
Coldworld
November 29, 2024 at 08:58 am
That may be right, though I don’t see the benefit from recent games in terms of an uptick in yards from Jacobs while Brooks is in. Despite his long gain yesterday, I don’t see the threat from the short passes Wilson showed before Brooks started getting those. Later in that game Jacobs seemed a little worn down. A little more Wilson might have been a better option, along with a run or two outside the tackles. Sometimes I think we get a little too cute.
If we want to go the route you infer, then I agree with you and your comment about Ingolls’ block, that a true FB would be wonderful as an option, but Brooks isn’t that. When we had one earlier in the season they again used him as a blocking TE. Just doesn’t seem to be in LaFleur’s DNA but he does love his pass blocking RBs. Ironically, Wilson has been pretty good at that too.

Between Brooks and Wilson, I think it is because Brooks is the better pass and rush blocker.

I think TGR is being a bit kind about the O-line's run blocking. They weren't getting much movement against the Dolphin D-line and the RB's had tough going all night. The O-line did pass block very well. Was glad to see Wicks find his hands after dropping the first pass which hit him right between the numbers. He looked more like the sure handed Wicks of last year after that first one. Tucker Kraft had a big night receiving and is a YAC monster once he does catch it. Would love to see more of him. And Love was solid all night and rarely threw the ball into harm's way.
Two defensive players, Walker and Stokes, are having a mini resurgence. Walker played his second straight good game and the Packer defensive is tougher with a good MLB. The Packer run D was outstanding all game. Stokes looked better than he has in some time in pass defense and even had a couple of tackles in run support. And with five sacks the Packer defense finally got some pressure on an opposing QB.
Fun game to watch as the Packers handled a surging Dolphin team.

Yeah, regarding the run blocking, perhaps I have in this game. I have consistently indicated over quite a few games now that Jacobs is making the run blocking look better than it is. IIRC a couple of games in which GB ended up with 175 yards or so on the ground I described the run blocking as adequate at best.
IDK: when the team scores 30 (and leaves a TD on the field due to a dropped TD by Walker last week and not connecting with Reed today for a TD), it is hard to knock what they are doing on offense. The passing offense is also a bit choppy at times. It is like a 12 cylinder engine with that occasionally misfires.

It runs a lot better when Kraft is included regularly, in part I think because it varies the part of the field we are attacking.

The RBs only got 91 yards yesterday while WR sweeps and gadget plays seem to do better. Maybe the Dolphins were stacking the box and not ready for outside runs. But the OL was not very effective between the tackles versus Miami in the run game.
However you are correct, 30 points should not be viewed negatively. The rest of the offense performed very well even without Doubs and a slowed rushing attack.

November 29, 2024 at 10:52 am
It was Josh Jacobs, in particular, who had a tough time running the ball. Wilson and Brooks did fine on the few carries they had. So maybe it was more a case of the Dolphins loading up to stop Jacobs, rather than the O-line having a poor night with run blocking.

How about one of the hottest pass rushers in the NFL in recent weeks leading up to this game getting blanked? Chop Robinson had 31 snaps, and ZEROs throughout his stat sheet.
Coldworld
November 29, 2024 at 08:46 am
Robinson has 3.5 sacks on the year. That’s 0.5 more than Wyatt who has not done anything since coming back after several games out injured. Robinson is their leading threat this year too. Pass rush isn’t their strong point this year, even against weaker opponents the last few weeks. Arguably it’s their Achilles heel.
greengold
November 29, 2024 at 09:13 am
Yeah, but since Week 8, Robinson had 28 pressures entering our game v. MIA, the most of any defender in the NFL in that span. Chop Robinson's 18.6% pressure rate ranks 3rd in the NFL amongst defenders with 100 or more pass-rush attempts, behind Aidan Hutchinson and Myles Garrett.
The Packers freaking BLANKED him. Chop Robinson didn't have one defensive statistic vs. Green Bay, in 31 snaps.
The pass blocking by the Packers OL is legit. Credit where credit is due.

I guess that's why Chop Robinson is ranked #18 overall in Pass Rush Grades for 2024 by PFF, with a True Pass Set Pass Rush grade of 84.5 on the season...
Rashan Gary is ranked #75 Overall with a 66.7 grade in the same category. Lukas Van Ness is ranked #83 Overall with his 54.0.
Whatever. That's the hill you want to die on? LOL. O... K .... LOL.

Yeah, I mentioned no Chop Robinson in the watch party comments.
Rasheed Walker, Quay, Wyatt, Willis, Christian Watson, Sean Rhyan, Enagbare, Romeo Doubs and Zach Tom all have contracts that end after 2025. I think it possible that Tom will get an extension after this season, his third.
Wyatt and Quay are playing to have their fifth year options picked up ($13M and $16M). Rasheed needs to play a little better to make the decision to extend him for sizable money easy. I suspect that Rasheed as an average starting LT who is young can command 4/$60M. Not so sure I want the Packers to pony up that kind of money. GB probably sees how Rasheed plays for the remainder of this year and decides what to do with Rasheed in 2025, perhaps during the season.
Doubs, Rasheed Walker, Tom and Enagbare all will qualify for the Proven Performance, so their cap numbers (if not given a new deal) will cost about $10M more than OTC and Spotrac currently show. That is, the $62M in cap space for 2025 shown by OTC really should be $10M less. Since only 39 players are under contract but GB will have 51 or more, another $11.9M should be deducted. That still leaves plenty of cap space for Tom and other players. I don't think the Packers release any players to save cap space. I think Alexander, Clark, Gary and Jenkins are all safe for 2025, at least as it looks right now.

Entertaining game to watch last night, I thought the defense for once had a hitch in their step and played very aggressive and physical. Why are the Packers defense so vulnerable covering the middle of the field...? They give up way to much... The D-Line played much better tonight, constantly putting pressure on the opposing QB 5 sacks - Thank you its about time. Going to need to do the same against the Lions next week. Congratulations and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. GPG

Slaton had no stats, but I thought he played a big role on the goal line stand. Besides the running back (and probably the main target on that 4th and goal) tripping over his rignt tackle's leg, Slaton got the pressure that enabled Walker's 4th down sack. Elton Jenkins may be the Packer's best run blocker, but I don't know what happened to him this year with all the penalties.

I was impressed with the defense. They were good in run defense, pass defense and pass rush. There were times Tua had too much time back there, but then hey, 5 sacks as well. Miami is full of threats to go all the way and to hold Hill, Waddle, and Achane to the production they had was a big win for the D.
The offense has only one productive TE and a top WR down. Yet they moved the ball well on the ground and in the air and scored 30. But I keep feeling this offense has so much more in them and could come uncorked at any time and put up tons a points. If they finished drives a little better they could have gone over 40 points.
Special teams played well too. For once it was the opponent that muffed a punt and lost the ball. Rochelle with the recovery, Nixon with the big kickoff return and McManus with no misses. It's great to see all three playing well at the same time.

Especially about the latent potency of the offense. I mean, GB is already averaging a very robust 26.5 points per game. Their 19th in red zone efficiency at 55.1% which is very close to the median of 55.8%.

I have repeatedly seen that DESPITE EVERYTHING, and there's been a lot, we're one of the top offenses in the league. How does that happen?
I think only the Packers can stop the Packers. We leave points on the field every game. And that's because we're the youngest team in the league.
Redzone efficiency is a good measure. I prefer the measure of Redzone TDs, by which we are 6th in the NFL. And in the measure of how many times you get to the redzone, we're 2nd in the league, one behind Detroit.
So we're reaching the redzone alot, we're scoring a lot of TDs, but we're only average-ish in efficiency. Still and all, we're scoring our fair share of points in the redzone. We've also got 9 from outside the redzone.
I truly believe we're going to put it together and score on 5 straight possessions and have 35 by halftime.

Does it also mean another new OC, another new offensive scheme for Caleb Williams? Bad for Williams, good for us if they do.
Bitternotsour
November 29, 2024 at 12:50 pm
WIlliams effectively got him fired... That kid has no internal clock, changed the play, decided he needed to go hero and burned the time off.
Eberflus perhaps guilty of not stopping the clock at 30 seconds, but they had a play and Williams thought he knew better.
Eberflus is going to have to be a D-Coordinator again to have any shot at a head coaching job.

That was a real bad 33 seconds. I mean, line up and spike the ball. Still 25 seconds left. Everybody connected with that should be shaking their head.
GregC
November 29, 2024 at 04:47 pm
Yeah, it was entirely Williams' fault. He had everyone lined up for something like ten seconds before the ball was snapped, and Eberflus had to be on the sideline thinking that it was going to be snapped at any second. That's what everyone watching the game was thinking. That situation is no different in the NFL than it is in college or even high school football, so it's not like this was something new for Williams. I know that stuff like this ultimately reflects on the coach, and that this was just the final straw for Eberflus, but still, it was a weird situation for him as the coach. At what point should he have called the timeout? The QB has to let the coach know when there is confusion and a timeout needs to be called.
