Packers Vs. Rams - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm
Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.
By JerseyAl

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live. These are not likely to be "highlight" plays.
Rashan Gary - Good
With all the uproar about Rashan Gary and his lack of production, I went ahead and watched all of his pass rush snaps (thanks NFL Pro). Here are three plays that should show you it's not as bad as we think (I'll admit that while watching the game live, I was in the sarcastic "Is Gary Playing" camp?). But going back and focusinfg solely on Gary tells a bit of a different story. It's not great, but it's not bad either (I can hear you all yelling, "he's not getting paid to just be good." - and I get it). Anyway, first up is the type of rep Gary is probably best at when he can get into the blocker's chest. Gary's game is power. He can be sudden, but he's not a bendy speed rusher or smooth mover. He can look a little frantic with short choppy steps and hands/arms flailing around without always appearing to have a defined purpose. But when he uses good pad level and goes right at the blocker, he can often push him back into the quarterback. It's not a sack and may not even be counted as a pressure, but he's affecting the quarterback.
Rashan Gary - Better
Here we have what was probably Gary's best pass rep of the game and it came at a critical juncture - the Packers' fourth down stop late in the game that sealed the win. Gary uses what I would call a quick swim move and this is about as much as you will ever see him bend turning the corner on an edge rush. He manages to get under and around the tackle, which forces #79 (Rob Havenstein) to basically put Gary in a choke hold (which of course was way too obvious to draw a flag). Gary and Edgerrin Cooper meet at the quarterback just a tick too late. Cooper actually beats Gary to the QB despite taking a long looping blitz approach. Man can he fly!
Rashan Gary - Intriguing
I've mentioned a few times that I think Gary is capable of adding a club or hump move to his pass rush repertoire. I'm not talking about a full-on Reggie White throw the blocker into yesterday hump move, but a way to clear a path for himself to the quarterback. Here the tackle has committed to keeping Gary from getting around the edge. Normally you might see Gary try to reset his rush to the inside, but he will end up stopping his feet and standing up straight while trying to change direction. That gives the blocker time to reset. Here he uses his own forward force and the tackle's own momentum against him (physics) to move the blocker out of the way, instead of trying to stop himself and circle around the tackle. I hope Gary continues to work on this move as he's the type of DE/edge rusher that could be successful with it.

It's not as bad as we think? I beg to differ. He's had ONE sack in his past 12 games. The plays highlighted here show nothing more than he's getting pressure and getting close (although not in #3), but that's about it. Yes, a hold should have been called in #2.
I would hope the coaching staff is breaking down Gary's film and finding the differences between his play during the past 12 games and say, the previous 30 where he was performing quite well from a pass rush standpoint.
I swear fixing this defense is like playing a game of Whac-A-Mole. First you fix the LB corps and then a problem springs up with your first round pick. Then you rebuild the safety room successfully and that's tamped down. But then you find you have a problem with your pass rush despite investing heavily in it over the past few years.
Hafley can only do so much with creative blitzing. In this case I think it's largely up to the individual player to get better and improve his repertoire.

I agree. This seems to be cherry picking from the Optimist Tree and the fruit didn't even look very good. 98% of the time Al nails it. This seemed to be an article filled with more hope than it did evidence. At 17 million a year, or whatever he gets paid, I would expect his film to inspire juuuuuust a bit more than these did. Still enjoyed reading it. Always one of the more thoughtful writers here. Though I don't agree on this one, I sure do appreciate you Al.

no problem. I actually started out with the goal of showing how poor Gary has been but after watching every single pass rush snap, I came away with a different feeling. Trust me, I wasn't trying to pick from the Optimist tree, but I had to write about what I saw.

Thanks Al; I wasn't truly focusing on Gary, but rewatching a small part of the game I saw him swarmed with double teams that were freeing up other guys to make a play on the QB. And I'm okay with that, too.

Thanks, Coach Jersey Al! Good breakdowns.
With Gary, I have learned to patient.
I did not like the draft selection. By year 2, I did. I was wrong.
A great career seemed to be blossoming, then he had the ACL in Nov 2022.
I expected he'd be out for a year, maybe longer. I was amazed he was ready to play by game one in 2023 and then played in all 17 games with 9 sacks.
As Al shows with his 3 plays, the talent is still there. So is the effort. So after 5 games, I should rely on patience again. He's earned it.

Good point! He was certainly affecting the passer quite often last year and it's clear the motor is still there. I'm happy to be patient and see how the season plays out with a new DC and a new system.

Last half of last year teams were double teaming and chipping him quite often. I wonder if going back to the hand in the dirt has him still trying to figure it out on the pass rush. I'm no football genius, but maybe coaches should try standing him up on obvious passing downs.

Actually, I'll be addressing this topic in tomorrow's "Polluted Mindset."

Look forward to it Al.
Mike Wahl had a good video supported podcast last season that showed his erosion of quickness standing up as he had a step before he employed his power.
He said his quickness to power was a bit delayed by standing up...something he did not do much in college. It was persuasive.
Now it seems he is a bit slow to the sack...he is still pressuring, no lack of horsepower. I believe he will produce more going ahead. His work ethic is incredible. How many NFL players have returned from a Nov ACL to play in Sept?

Maybe you should address the Jets Firing
their coach.

Hand in the dirt is actually a good point. I would have thought he would be better with that technique. Perhaps you are on to something here.

You’re right about one thing Al, most of us are wondering WTH happened to the pass rush.
It’s not just Gary—where are these other dudes?
Frankly, I believe it’s going to improve—we have the talent and Cooper is going to become more and more relevant.
Go Packers!!!

On these three plays Gary might be a tick short, but instead watch Preston Smith. Slooowww. His time may be past. Show me some LVN with Gary together, let's see what they are doing. Gary and Enegbare together? Gary and Cox? Mabry? Preston has always been solid, but not making mistakes doesn't mean he's contributing in a more meaningful and impactful way.
One thing is evident... More Cooper.

LVN got 42 snaps to Gary's 49. LVN got plenty of run, but he doesn't have pass rush moves yet.

I should have been more specific. I wasn't looking for LVN's snap count or his production, but Gary's production with the other Edge's. Anything different? Same? Worse?

Good to see some good pass rushing reps from Gary. It seems like every time he gets a good rush the QB releases the ball extremely quickly. So bad luck has played a part in Gary's unimpressive start. I haven't given up on him yet.

On that first play Al, Rashan Gary gets directed inside by the Tackel and Karl Brooks get directed outside by the guard - effectively blocking each other's lane to the QB........ and with Walker playing spy, the A gap is as big as an A+B gap (giving Stafford complete unobstructed view of the crossing routes).
FYI - Clark got double teamed by the C + RG and Smith was easily accounted for by the LT.
Summary: Stafford was respected too much as a running QB and Quay Walker should have blitzed more often. This play is a completely different story vs the Cardinals.
