Robert Tonyan Has Come a Long Way
Packers tight end Robert Tonyan has come a long way in his first three seasons.

There is a multitude of reasons why Green Bay Packers fans should be excited about tight end Robert Tonyan. Not only did he recently come out and publicly support Aaron Rodgers, but he’s coming off a breakout season in which he hauled in 11 touchdowns. Green Bay is anticipating that last year wasn’t an anomaly. Another good year from Tonyan could put him one step closer toward being one of the best tight ends this team has seen in recent memory, and another contract.
Doubters will tell you about how Tonyan’s 2020 numbers were inflated because he was a by-product of Rodgers. However, those people have only a surface level of Tonyan’s abilities and probably haven’t kept track of his development.
Tonyan had some intriguing moments during his first two years with the Packers, but he struggled with consistency. His 54-yard touchdown against the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football is a prime example after he caught just one pass over the next four games. As both a first and second-year player, Tonyan was mostly viewed as a developmental player who would learn behind veterans in Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis.
Tonyan won the starting job in 2020 and responded by catching 52 passes for 586 yards. Not many will mention that his production came on only 59 targets, which was 23rd among tight ends. Also, his 11 touchdowns were tied for 5th in the NFL and even matched Paul Coffman’s franchise record for receiving touchdowns by a tight end in a single season.
Even though Tonyan’s athleticism was pretty apparent early on, last year’s productivity still came as a pleasant surprise. Tonyan’s background as a college wide receiver certainly helped him in the passing game, but it put him behind the curve as far as blocking.
Last year, Tonyan wrote an essay for The Player’s Tribune and recalled being scorned by left tackle David Bakhtiari at a Thanksgiving feast.
According to Tonyan, here is how Bakhtiari’s criticism landed: “Listen, I don’t know what’s up with you in the passing game, or how you do things when the ball’s in the air…but when we’re running the ball, in the run game, what you’re doing...it’s not good enough. You need to be better.”
Ultimately, Tonyan took Bakhtiari’s well-intended reproval to heart. He improved as a run blocker by watching Lewis and also continued to sharpen his skills by training during the offseason training with All-Pro George Kittle.
So, when you give Rodgers most of the credit for Tonyan’s emergence, it is a true disservice to the tight end’s work ethic and his strides over the last three years. Now looking forward to Tonyan’s fourth year with the Packers, 2021 could be his best season yet and could very well put him next in line for a rich contract.

Looking forward to another great year from BT. It should lead him to a nice payday next year, hopefully back in GB. FAS! GPG!

The next 3-4 years should be Tonyan's best. Alas, after this year, it may not be with the Packers due to the salary cap hell that looms directly ahead for the team (at this rate I'm thinking that Tonyan may be a 10M/yr. player). Also a factor in Tonyan's future as a GBP, will be the play of Jace Sternberger. I understand that he is completely healthy and 12-15 lbs. heavier. Should he (Sternberger) have a breakout year, the Packers may have to choose between Tonyan and the cheaper Sternberger. Such is the reality when your QB has the biggest salary cap hit in the NFL - taking up about 20% of the Packers cap.

I have a suspicion the choice will be between Adams and Tonyan. I don't see a world where GB can afford both of them.

Neither do I. Also, for a little extra hand-wringing, with the Packers exercising Alexander's 5th year option, he'll get a raise of more than 11M/yr. in 2022.

If there is, Rodgers won’t be here I think

One year at a time man.
We all thought Aaron Jones would be gone this year also.
One year at a time...

What held back Big Bob, especially in year two, was the flat tire Graham. Graham took snaps that delayed Bob's emergence IMO. Graham was not what I would call a road grader in the run game. Wonder if Bakht chewed out Jimmy too?

Graham was a negative r.o.i. - especially in terms of opportunity cost as you have outlined, i.e., snaps denied Tonyan. As far as the "Bakh talk" - probably not. Graham is a made man in the NFL - seasons and salary - so he has "tenured respect" - unfortunately.

Honestly, I thought in some ways Graham bought Tonyan health and development time. There is no doubt he improved his game considerably in that time. The thing for me is if he can add back a bit if that early YAC to his play he becomes even better. It’s in there, perhaps just a question of putting it all together.

This is probably unknowable. It is hard to know if Tonyan was ready in 2019 such that Graham's 622 snaps pushed Tonyan undeservedly down the depth chart or if it gave Tonyan needed time. Tonyan went from 67 snaps in 2018 to 193 to 2020's 638.
Graham wasn't terrible in 2019. Graham is more a down the field receiver than Tonyan. I've little doubt that Tonyan's blocking improved from 2019 to 2020. Would his blocking have improved if the FO had cut Graham in 2019 after just one season and given Graham's snaps to Tonyan? IDK.

Agreed. I think it’s safe to say that Tonyan benefitted from the time to transition his game. Maybe that would have come a little faster with more snaps, but I also sense that the extra time allowed it to click. As you say, no way to know, but I do think it’s possible that he was helped not hurt by Graham’s presence.

Lambeau,
It wasnt Graham that held back Tonyan but the stupidity of MM. I could clearly see Tonyans talent from day 1, but apparently MM couldn't. When the Packers were out of the playoffs in 2018 with about 4 games left even with Graham's broken thumb in a club like wrap around one whole hand MM kept Graham on the field with Tonyan on the bench. Graham couldnt catch even with 2 good hands. That was the last straw for me with MM.

The Packers just re-worked Big Bob's contract to free up $ 2 million in cap space.

Wonder what TGR thinks about that "conversion of Free Agent tender to a bonus".

Tonyan is not a premier TE, but IMHO he doesn't get the respect & attention he deserves. Not flashy, not a big talker, not a lot of YAC... all he does is deliver good production week in week out. I think he's more important to this offense than it might appear.

I also think it’s slightly disingenuous to keep adding the caveat Rodgers. Obviously a good QB helps, but Tonyan got open and caught catchable passes routinely. That’s on him mostly and the scheme a little. Rodgers just ups the number of catchable targets.

All is true, but he caught many passes from that miss direction play that was schemed for a mobile TE.

Agree!
Be interesting now to see how he does with Amari in the slot. Exciting!

The best part is we stole him from the Detroit Lions scrap heap

Tonyan is a good player for us. He’s been cheap and he’s worked hard and he’s improved.
The blocking stuff.....how are you helping the team when you don’t have the ball? Offense works better when people get blocked.

I’m glad he’s a Packer. His play speaks for itself. Tonyan seems like a dedicated professional. I’d rather have an athletic receiver who is learing to block than a good blocker without the pass catching & route running skills.

My favorite green bay packer. I hope he has a killer season coming up.
