Stop Trying To Trade Romeo Doubs

In no way does it make sense to trade Romeo Doubs

I’ve finally had enough. Of all the weeks to have to write about this topic, I didn’t want it to be the Aaron Rodgers (not) revenge game—but I can’t hold my tongue anymore. I’ve seen this idea bandied about within the Packers universe, and to me, it is a foolish notion. In my opinion, the idea of the Packers even entertaining trading Romeo Doubs needs to be wiped away from the ether. He is simply too important to the Packers’ offense and what they are trying to accomplish this season: a Super Bowl LX berth.

Don’t get me wrong—this Packers team could definitely use an upgrade or two come the November 4th trade deadline in a few areas. Their cornerback and defensive line depth could certainly use a veteran to help with the stretch run into the playoffs. But they shouldn’t use Doubs as the trade chip to make that happen. There have been rumors regarding a pending Doubs trade dating all the way back to the offseason—most notably once the Packers used a first-round pick on Matthew Golden. Since then, he’s established himself as the de facto number-one wide receiver for Jordan Love. When a play is needed, Love more often than not looks toward his most reliable target: number 87.

Think back to the last few games, and that alone gives you all the information you need to see why Green Bay shouldn’t move him. The Packers don’t tie the game against the Cowboys without Doubs’ three-touchdown performance. When the Packers are in the red zone, Doubs’ ability to win quickly off the line with his inside move is borderline indefensible. The Packers aren’t sitting in first place in the NFC if they go on to lose that game. This past Sunday against the Cardinals, Doubs led the team with six receptions on eight targets for 72 yards. That performance continued a streak of games where he has caught at least five passes. Even as Golden and Tucker Kraft’s usage have increased in recent weeks, it’s still Doubs leading the team in targets.

The biggest argument for trading Doubs has been the depth the Packers have at wide receiver. When completely healthy, the Packers’ depth chart sits at seven receivers, and the team rarely keeps more than six on the active roster at any given time. The issue with that logic is that all these receivers have rarely been healthy at the same time. Currently, Christian Watson and Jayden Reed are on the shelf. Watson stated on Wednesday that he plans to play this upcoming Sunday against the Steelers, but seeing how he’s barely nine months removed from a serious injury, he’s all but certain to be on a pitch count. It would make sense for him to take Malik Heath’s snaps—somewhere in the 10–20 range—for a few weeks to ease himself back into football shape.

Reed has been out since early in Week 2 after breaking his collarbone on a spectacular catch that unfortunately didn’t count. Reports indicate that he’ll be back around mid-November. Once he’s back, he’ll have to work his way into football shape. Not only is he coming back from that collarbone injury, but he also had surgery to repair the Jones fracture in his foot that he suffered back in training camp. I, for one, still need to see that Reed’s drop issues from a season ago are behind him before feeling comfortable moving on from Romeo Doubs, who has the most reliable hands among all receivers on the roster.

Not only has Watson yet to make his season debut and Reed still being on injured reserve, but Dontayvion Wicks is now dealing with a calf injury that he suffered against the Cardinals. He has yet to practice this week, and all reports seem to point to him not doing so, putting him in line to miss the Steelers game. I know looking back at “what-ifs” isn’t the most productive exercise, but let’s imagine for a moment if the Packers had traded Doubs and he wasn’t on the roster this past Sunday. The four starting receivers would have consisted of rookie Matthew Golden, rookie Savion Williams, Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath. Once Wicks dropped out, we would have been left with two rookies and a blocking receiver to carry the load. Considering how difficult it was for the Packers’ offense for the first three and a half quarters with Doubs, it doesn’t seem feasible to think they would’ve won that game without him.

How many recent seasons have Packers fans thrown around the question, “Who’s the number-one receiver?” And now that we finally have an answer, we’re lining up to trade him simply because he’s on an expiring contract? Football teams chasing Super Bowls don’t trade away starting-caliber players—they acquire them. Even after trading two future first-round picks for Micah Parsons and a future sixth-round pick for tackle Darian Kinnard, the Packers still have plenty of draft capital to make a move to improve this roster without touching any of their young talent.

Realistically speaking, Brian Gutekunst could recoup a nice compensatory pick in 2027 if Doubs leaves in free agency after this season—and it could be a better pick than Doubs might net in a trade. Wide receivers clean up on the open market. If Doubs finds two teams in a bidding war and cashes in, the Packers could be looking at as high as a third-round pick if he signs elsewhere. Would a team give up a third-rounder at the deadline? Maybe—but a fourth or fifth is more likely.

This 2025 season is all hands on deck for this Packers team. The moment they decided to push their chips to the middle of the table and acquire Micah Parsons was the moment any conversation about trading away key member’s of this team came to an end. Romeo Doubs is too important to this team’s Super Bowl aspirations to trade. End of discussion.

Totally agree.
How about a Luke Musgrave or Jacob Monk as bait?
Reality says we'll need to trade some value to pick up some value.
Corners and good DT's won't come cheap.

Jacob Monk 😂 now THAT'S a good one. The guy couldn't crack the backup C spot last year and forced GB to start the RG in a playoff game who has never played C in his career. He followed it up with a terrible camp and subsequent injury. No one wants him.

That's exactly why I want to trade him if we canfind a desperate team with too many draft picks.

How about Musgrave lining up at WR? Or #16?

Or how about building in some move TE plays and abandoning the idea that we have a TE other than Kraft who is worth putting out there to block (or get one who can instead).

I've always liked that idea. You put him on the field with Kraft and Doubs and Golden and he's either a 3rd WR or a second TE. Especially right now when Watson and Reed aren't available.

I view it as highly unlikely Doubs will be traded, but it all depends on the price. Given the Packer depth at WR and if some team gets desperate, it could happen.

I find it also unlikely that Gutekunst won't try to backfill the draft picks he sacrificed for Micah Parsons.

My thinking as well Bitter. He won't get the #1's back but Gute seems to do very well with 4th and 5th round draft picks. I won't be surprised if he picks up extra late round draft choices.

If we are serious about winning now, we won’t trade an integral part of our offense with whom it’s clear Love has a good on field rapport absent a comparable replacement in the role or crass stupidity. Since we lack the former at this point that leaves only the latter.

I wasn't talking about Doubs who would command more than a 4th or 5th rounder to pry loose from the Packers. I more had in mind Enagbare given the eventual return of Cox and Oliver. The Packers will have a surplus of DEs and a trade makes sense there.

And I do believe Gute will try to recoup some draft capital whether through trades or letting guys leave in free agency.

There are limits to the number of comp picks available via free agent signings - but there are going to be some pretty decent players leaving this go-round. Doubs will no doubt be worth a 4th. Willis probably a 3rd. If Quay somehow leaves that's another 3rd.

If someone is desperate for a player and willing to exceed the likely comp pick, you need to at least consider the deal.

And a trade would be for a 2026 draft choice whereas as comp pick would be in 2027. If the price is sufficient you can not ignore the future. And yes, the Packers are going to lose several players to free agency this winter - their salary cap will not allow everyone to be resigned.

Have to trade someone good if you want anything in return. Doubs is a good players but what do fans think they can get for him? I don't think anyone would even offer a 3rd. They have been hit with injuries there early and I would keep the depth. After the season I could see the team trying to move Gary. With LVN and Enagbare playing well paying both Parsons and Gary might be too much at the same position group.

They would have to pay Enagbare too though. Isn't he on the final year of his deal?

Weeks ago before Reed and now Wicks nagging injuries it would’ve made sense to trade for a starting CB. Probably, Not so much now.

I don’t think the Packers are trying to move Doubs. I think they’d be nuts to do so despite the extra mid round pick we’d likely get. He’s a key piece of this offense with no currently obvious replacement and we are contending. Wicks may be an option. I don’t see a lot of opportunities for him after Watson gets up to speed and less once Reed comes back.

Simultaneous to me reading this column, they just showed a graphic on TV showing that the Packer are spending some real money on WRs: Golden is cost us $10M, and Doubs is only getting $3.5 . Watson's making $8. I'd say that in comparison, Doubs has earned his money.

In the summer, I was a fan of trading Doubs because of our mirage-like depth at WR, as well as his salary and health history. Today, middle of October, he's been the best of the bunch.

I don't think we should trade anybody. I think we ought to hold on, to what we've got. It doesn't make a difference if we're ready or not. We're not even halfway there. We've got good players, and that's a lot, for Love.

This team is plenty good enough to win with. We all know they can play better than they have, and it's a miracle that we aren't 6-0 despite everything.

Pretty dumb article. Who is "trying to trade" Doubs???

Some fanboy has a trade idea about a football team he has zero control over... and this qualifies as "trying to trade Doubs?" Really? Or just because some clueless butthead on the internet writes an article or starts a rumor... this means I have to believe it's true?

Does anybody have any information whatsoever that the only people who actually matter - the Packers front office - are "trying to trade" Doubs?

"Can't hold your tongue anymore?" LOL. Just stop with the righteous indignation....

"Does anybody have any information whatsoever that the only people who actually matter - the Packers front office - are "trying to trade" Doubs?"

The "doomscroll media", which needs no actual verifiable proof or substantiation for any rumor it starts, is responsible for planting this seed in the minds of Packers fans, and it started to build some steam in the summer. I haven't seen any indication that the Packers are actively shopping Doubs...there was chatter last week about the Packers initiating talks about an extension.

I just keep thinking of the suspension last season and wonder if there are some lingering effects which are certainly not in evidence now. However, I would not trade him this season.

Golden has supplanted Wicks with the 3rd most receptions but the rookie still has a ways to go in route running and gaining Love's trust. He is improving and will get increasing opportunities because of his speed, strength and hands. The only way he grows is if he gets on the field.

Doubs, Kraft, JJ, and Golden are the current volume receivers with Watson about to join them. The schedule ahead is rough and the Packers will need all 5 receivers.

With the 11 remaining games, 8 are in NFC and 5 currently have winning records...Panthers, Eagles, Lions, bares (twice)...22-11 combined record.

Ugly Purple, 3-4 (twice) and the Giants, 2-5, have issues but are not NFC pushovers.

The AFC opponents have a combined record of 11-9 with the 1-5 Ravens. Steelers and Broncos are gonna be tough opponents...and you cannot take a struggling Ravens team for granted with John Harbaugh pushing buttons.

Now is not the time to disarm. I would be shocked if Team Gutey traded one of their top weapons with the the big battles ahead.

Kraft and Doubs are #1 and #2 in targets, receptions, yards, and receiving TDs.

I'm surprised that Wicks has played in all 6 games, starting 4, that he's only caught 13 passes for 134 yards and 0 TDs. I was never really a member of his fan club, but I thought he'd be more productive than this.

Also, and I know I keep saying don't expect much from rookies, but I really thought that Golden would have had more of an impact. He's #3 in targets,
but hasn't been in the endzone once. I kind of thought we'd give him the same kind of chances we gave to Watson as a rookie. Remember his first target?

I hope, if Watson comes back, we put him in the game and on his first snap, we throw his high and long and see if he can outrun everyone. And then I'd start doing the same thing to Golden.

Wyatt coming back changes my opinion of trading for a DT, but corner has been thin all year despite gutey thinking otherwise. Unfortunately, I don't see anyone on this roster they can afford to trade away that will pay for corner help. Any additions are going to have to come from FAs or trading more draft picks away.
