The "Free Agency" that Really Matters
Gutekunst isn't the only person at 1265 who needs to get aggressive.
By JosephR

The Green Bay Packers' 2024 season is over ladies and gentlemen, and while I am immensely proud of what this team accomplished, like many of you, I'm somewhat left wondering what could've been. This team was choked with talent on both sides of the ball, and in many ways, I would consider it a "complete team". But what never materialized over the last 6 months was we never saw this team play a complete game. You heard it over, and over, and over again from Head Coach Matt LaFleur that he wanted to see them execute within all three phases of the game. While they managed to come close, the dream of an emphatic win was never realized.
When a team underperforms the head coach is typically the easy scapegoat. Is LaFleur totally to blame for the Packers' gameday woes? That's a loaded question with a multitude of answers depending on who you ask. But it's safe to say, that LaFleur is not completely blameless, as he's had his gameday faux pas, that continues to haunt him season after season. But what I will say, is that just like the 11 guys on the field, a star is only as good as his supporting cast. It's why the Oscars have a Best Supporting Actor/Actress Award; because one guy can't just whip up a masterpiece all by himself (yes, not even Aaron Rodgers *eyeroll*).
With less than one week from the season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wildcard Round, the Packers' 2024 offseason has already got interesting. General Manager Brian Gutekunst has already made mention of his being aggressive in going after championships; shortly thereafter, LaFleur fired Defensive Line Coach Jason Rebrovich. Additionally, Tom Clements the Packers' longtime QB Coach retired, which may have been a surprise to more than just the fans. But wait, there's more....the Jets requested an interview with Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley, and then the Bears requested an interview with Offensive Coordinator Adam Stenavich. While nothing has happened yet, it's safe to say the Packers' 2025 Coaching Staff could look A LOT different than 2024.
Matt LaFleur got a home run with Hafley, maybe even a grand slam. To have your first DC gig in the NFL, change the defensive scheme from a 3-4 to a 4-3, AND lead the league in takeaways is nothing to sneeze at. Retaining him should be LaFleur and the Packers' highest priority, as three DCs in three years is certainly not ideal, especially if the Packers, who are once again the youngest team in the NFL, want to see that talent properly blossom.
As for Stenavich....well, I kinda look at him as the Joe Barry of the offense, but better. If I want an outstanding Offensive Line Coach, he's probably on my shortlist. But I don't think he's the guy to elevate an offense from good to great. Now that the Packers have a $200 million quarterback in Jordan Love, I'm not so sure if I can stand to see the offense sputtering like it did all year. I know injuries are part of the game (Jordan Love, Jaire Alexander, Christian Watson, Luke Musgrave, Marshawn Lloyd, Jordan Morgan, A.J. Dillon), but the best coaches in the game should be able to extract the maximum performance from even their role players on offense (I'm talking to YOU Jason Vrable!). While I believe the main reason for elevating Stenavich to OC was to retain him, if his "promotion" comes at the expense of Jordan Love's development and the offense's ultimate success, he should wish him the best of luck in Chicago.
So here we are...two coaching jobs that potentially turn into four. What's a guy to do? Two words: GET AGGRESSIVE!!!! I'm not going to pretend to know who LaFleur has his eye on, save for potentially two. But as usual with the Packers I expect him to go way out into left field and sign some coaches who make perfect sense. And with the signing of Hafley, we can rest confident that it doesn't have to be someone he knows/coached with.
So here we are, the "potential" candidates:
Offense
1. Nathaniel Hackett, OC/QB Coach - Jets
I get it, Hackett horrifically flamed out with the Broncos and is now presumably back in the soup line after the Jets make their next head coaching hire. But Hackett and LaFleur work. They "fixed" Aaron Rodgers and there's familiarity with the scheme and Love as well. LaFleur may have to play hardball on this one, bringing Hackett in and moving Stenavich back down to OL Coach. It's no secret that Stenavich is probably the 3rd or 4th preferred candidate for the Bears, so unless he just wants to spend a year out of football, or has an insider track to somewhere else, he's going to have to take his lumps and just coach the offensive line.
2. Byron Leftwich, Former OC/QB Coach - Buccaneers
I still don't understand why Leftwich continues to get a raw deal despite getting rave reviews from his bosses and players around the league. He's available and I know he's hungry. Spending two years with Tom Brady certainly has its value as well. His former OC/playcalling chops also give him the potential for grooming by LaFleur if Stenavich does make his eventual exit to Chicago or elsewhere in the future.
3. Doug Pederson, Former Head Coach - Jaguars
Pederson may have had the worst run of a Super Bowl-winning Coach in the modern era as I've ever seen. But Pederson is a Packer for life and has plenty of experience, both as a player and as a coach. Him "taking a few years off" to grow Jordan Love and grow himself as a coach can do wonders for both the Packers and Pederson in the long run.
4. Jimbo Fisher, Former Head Coach - Texas A&M
This is ambitious I know, but hear me out. Jimbo Fisher got paid by Texas A&M to not coach for a whopping $77 million. Although he probably never has to work another day in his life he does want to coach again. Would he consider the NFL? No clue, all we know is he's looking for the "right opportunity". It's safe to say that he'll be sitting out of coaching college football yet again in 2025. To be honest, I'm not sure if 2026 looks good for Jimbo either. Could the Packers pique his interest? He took Jameis Winston to a Heisman, Davey O'Brien, and the National Championship after only 2 years on campus, I'm sure there's something he could offer Jordan Love and the Packers, even if it's only for a year or two.
5. Bobby Petrino, OC/QB Coach - Arkansas
Bobby Petrino knows offense, and he knows quarterbacks. He took Lamar Jackson and turned him into a Heisman winner and laid the groundwork for the weapon he is in the NFL today. Jake Plummer and Ryan Mallet also owe their own passing prowess to Petrino who is respected for his brilliant mind on the greaseboards and coaching up quarterbacks. I would be curious to see if the lessons imposed on Jackson that would turn him into an eventual NFL MVP could be replicated when mentoring Jordan Love.
6. Will Stein, OC/QB Coach - Oregon
Stein is an ascendant talent in the coaching arena, and maybe part of the reason for his offensive acumen is the aforementioned Petrino, as he served as a graduate assistant at Louisville after his playing career for the Cardinals. He took off from there, with gigs for the Longhorns, Texas High School Powerhouse Lake Travis, and UTSA before arriving in Eugene. Make no mistake, Will Stein will probably be a Power 4 Head Coach or NFL Offensive Coordinator by the time he's 40 (he's only 35) with his renowned QB-developing ability. If LaFleur can catch him before the wave starts to rise, he and the offense will be in for a real treat.
7. A.J. Milwee, OC/QB Coach - Texas
There's something to be said when you're plucked from one FBS powerhouse to another. Longhorns' Head Coach Steve Sarkisian made sure that Milwee was on his staff when he left Alabama to become the head man in Austin. Milwee is still a relative unknown to many, but I trust the coaching management skills of Nick Saban and Sarkisian to make great coaching hires. Given the wellspring that would be his former bosses and the opportunities he's had to coach Tua Tagovailoa, Bryce Young, Mac Jones, Quinn Ewers, and Arch Manning, I believe Milwee may have something to offer the NFL coaching ranks and the Packers especially.
Defense
1. Robert Saleh, "Assistant" - Packers
Whatever you want to call him, Robert Saleh is in Green Bay helping his best friend LaFleur. He's already been offered his old job back in San Francisco, and I believe the only reason he hasn't accepted it is one, the 49ers are probably going to end up in cap hell and their window is closing if not already closed; and two, if Hafley does leave for the Jets he'd rather work for his best friend until the right head coaching job becomes available.
2. Aaron Whitecotton, DL Coach - Jets
The Packers have already requested an interview with Whitecotton which I'm assuming stems from a glowing endorsement from Saleh. Or maybe the Jets' penchant for a nearly impenetrable defensive line for over a decade. Whether the interview is already been conducted or not, I fully expect him to take the job, as there's no guarantee that the Jets' new hire will retain him (Jets' Interim Head Coach Jeff Ulbrich was hired as the Falcons DC as I was writing this article). Also, during the 2024 Combine Whitecotton was seen with Packers' scout Matt Malaspina and they were quite chummy. So maybe there's more familiarity than we know.
3. K.J. Wright, Defensive Quality Control - 49ers
Keeping with the familiarity theme here, Wright is probably familiar to Packers fans during the Seahawks' "Legion of Boom" era. While Wright never coached under Saleh, I'm going to hastily make a 3-way "connection" between Green Bay, Seattle, and San Francisco, as they have their pleasantries off the field. Wright could see Green Bay as a promotion from being a mere assistant to being an actual position coach. Whether LaFleur wants to tap his connections with Saleh, Shanahan, or Schneider to get the rundown on Wright, he has his options.
4. Warren Sapp, Defensive Quality Control - Colorado
I love former players as coaches, and you know what I love even more? Hall of Famers as coaches. Deion Sanders gave Sapp an opportunity, and while this is most likely a long shot, I'd love to see him get an opportunity in the pros. The current crop of Packers defensive linemen most likely idolized Sapp growing up, so the respect and the hunger to learn from him should be there. I'd love to see what he could do for that position room in just one season.
5. Bo Davis, DL Coach - LSU
"Bo knows!" And this Bo certainly knows the defensive line position. Considered one of the best position coaches in the country, Bo has bounced around the college ranks and the pros with success at every stop, he's got three national titles to prove it. His resume includes multiple stops at LSU and Alabama (once again Nick Saban knows talent), plus two stints at Texas. His professional resume has gigs with the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Lions. His coaching journey has had him cross paths with Marcus Spears, Kyle Williams, Terrence Cody, Malcolm Brown, Jonathan Allen, A'Shawn Robinson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Da'Shawn Hand, Jarran Reed, Byron Murphy II, T'Vondre Sweat, Keondre Coburn, and Moro Ojomo. His impact on the NFL's defensive lines of the past, present, and future cannot be understated.
6. Terrence Knighton, DL Coach - Florida State
Most of you should remember "Pot Roast" and his exploits around the league. After a brief hiatus at the conclusion of his playing career, Knighton quickly caught on in the college ranks before the Panthers pounced on him to name him their Assistant DL Coach. He got his first full job with Nebraska and is now set to do the same job with Florida State for the 2025 season. Could he be willing to jettison Tallahassee even though he's just got there?
7. Aaron Donald, "Assistant" - Rams
Although Aaron Donald is retired, Rams' Head Coach Sean McVay has granted him unlimited access to the Rams facilities; and he's been known to come in and "help out" from time to time. Whether he is genuinely just there to give advice to the guys or whether he's just getting some mental reps at practice in case the Rams stumble into the Super Bowl is anyone's guess. That aside, Donald has expressed an interest in coaching if given the right opportunity. Could the Packers' DL room offer that opportunity, possibly generating DC interest from teams in the years to come? This is another long shot, but one can dream, right?
The Packers have some holes to fill in the coaching ranks. I know many of you are probably more concerned with the personnel who'll take the field, but in 2024 we saw a very talented Packers team that just couldn't seem to get out of its own way, for a variety of reasons. While Matt LaFleur may have some progression of his own to go through, I do think some potential upgrades could be made in the coaching staff, and perhaps not even just the positions that are currently/could be open. Whether additional coaching changes come or not, I believe this 2025 coaching staff has more to gain/lose than next year's playing roster. We'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

With the Lions crashing and burning in such a Goff-like way, I'd like to be the first on board to say, Hey Zadarius, 45 points allowed, how's our ass taste.

Well, not sure what that means.
Did the Packers beat up on the Lions?
If Za'darius still played for the Packers, with his numbers, he would have been the Packers sack leader.

Za'darius , the carpetbagger or is it gold digging spotlight lover. How great was that to watch. Other than the Vikings losing in splendid fall off a cliff fashion, watching "Z " doing the same with his latest new team, the duh Lions, going down in flames was simply awesome, and a dream come true!

I was assured that the Lions were the next dynasty, and that Dan Campbell was a great coach. 45 points.
Chesty is fond of reminding me that I said the Lions had peaked last year, when they got to the Championship game and even had a lead in the second half. And all season, when ever they won and ran up the score, there was Chesty reminding me of what I had said.
So....2023, you're in the Championship game. In 2024, you're not, and you don't win a single playoff game. That still kind of looks to me like they peaked last year and regressed a little this year. Next year, they'll probably regress a little more and win fewer games.
So, one more time: Last year's run by Detroit was their best season in over 50 years. This year wasn't as good. They're on their way to becoming Detroit again, Campbell will eventually be fired. It is destiny.

I, for one, would be standing and booing the entire game if Warren Sapp ever became a Packers coach. Next to the Bears and Vikings entire teams, he ranks third among those who suck.
Hackett can also stay away. Anything related to the Aaron Rodgers end days in Green Bay should be employed elsewhere.
Bobby Petrino? Again, no.

I agree the Packers need something more like Lombardi's, " What the hell's going on out there? Grab, grab, grab. No one's tackling! "
It won't come from Matt LaFleur. He's not that kind of guy. And it doesn't help that LaFleur thinks that Love could be the guy by telling him to speak up more on the field and in the locker room. Love is also not that kind of guy.
Maxx Crosby on defense would be the kind of " aggressive " guy you need. . . for defense.
For offense, I don't know. Right now the offense is more like Love: erratic and inconsistent.

Joeph R-Wow, just wow! Finally, the truth! I had to re-read your article several times. Please send to LaFleur.
What a brilliant, insightful and true article. This is what I'm talking about.
An upgrade in supporting cast (position coaches) is needed.
Agree with your analysis of Stenavich. ( Though,I think Stenavich has been tasked with Matt's off-loaded Admin duties and he calls run plays, so there is little time to focus on offensive players/pass game)
Vrabel is not the best WR coach-GB could do better
Yes to all of your coaching candidates. I wish Matt would meet with them.
Yes to Aaron Donald
Yes, keep Hafley (and let him choose his players)
***Hafley is going to want a competent Offense or he will leave.
I'm not sold on Hackett-lol

" Robert Saleh is in Green Bay helping his best friend LaFleur. He's already been offered his old job back in San Francisco, and I believe the only reason he hasn't accepted it is..."
Because he wants to be a HC and has interviewed (or scheduled to interview) for 3 or 4?
Even if he's bypassed as a HC, I think he'll be in demand as a coordinator for the new HC who get hired as they assemble their staffs.

Let's be honest though, this round of openings is not ideal.
Bears...nuff said
Cowboys....Jerry Jones
Saints....salary cap hell
Patriots...already filled
Jaguars....apathetic owner retaining horrible GM
Jets....idiotic owner
Raiders....can't get out of their own way.
Saleh jumped at the opportunity to be a HC prematurely and he's learned from it. There's no reason to jump back out there again until the right opportunity comes.

One thing I loved about Hafley immediately is he said he just wants to coach, rather than deal with all the stuff (transfer portal, NIL money, etc) that comes with being a HC in college these days.
Maybe eventually he’d be interested in a HC job in the NFL, but right now just seems too soon.

Brian Gutekunst: 'It's time we started competing for championships'
This is what i was talking about in a recent post.
On how the paradigm of Packer goals have changed.
Then here comes Gute, proving my point days after.
My point being, that the paradigm of the Packers goals were 'adjusted' to making the playoffs in recent years, based on quotes from both Gute and Murphy.
On one side of the mouth, winning the Superbowl is always the stated goal.
Murphy was asked before the start of the season a couple years ago what the Packers goal was.
He paused (of course)....then awkwardly stated " well, it's called TitleTown for a reason.
But in reality, the other side of the mouths told us different.
I guess it depends which way the wind is blowing.
As far as Gute goes...Yes, it's time Brian.
It's been 14 years since we won a NFC Championship game.
Ron won it in his 6th season.
Ted won it in his 6th season.
So it's settled, the Packers are now focused on winning Championships per Gute.
Good to hear, now walk the walk.
NJ-RICK
January 19, 2025 at 08:17 pm
Maybe its time GUTE takes a walk.. That's his team on the field - Draft, free agents and walk on's. He has missed on to many high daft choices. Need a new GM IMO.
Leatherhead
January 20, 2025 at 10:00 am
It's been 14 years since we won a Championship game. How many did we win in the 40 years before that?
First step in winning a title is that you have to have a team that's able to contend. Win enough regular season games to make the playoffs, have good enough health that we can put our best team on the field in the elimination games.
There is a window with Love. We'll either win win Love in the next couple of years or it'll be time to start over.
I will point out that in the games that have ended our seasons, we've scored 10 points, 21 points, 16 points (regular season against Detroit), 10 points. The teams that won this weekend scored 45, 28, 27, and 23. Now, this is with different QBs with different players around him, but our offense in the playoffs hasn't even been mediocre.
RobinsonDavis
January 19, 2025 at 02:32 pm
I agree with the main point of this article!
It is evident to me that we forgot the "develop" in the Green Bay Draft and Develop philosophy. We have to have coaches that know how to teach at the pro level, first and foremost, if we are to live by this philosophy....and Pay them!!
However, I also believe we need to blend in inspirational, tough guy coaches that can get players mentally focused. We have far to many mental mistakes. Having discussions with the players is not solving the issues, and I would further point out that some of the mistakes this past year with focus, were veterans...not young players. IMO, we need a mix of some "kick-butt" disciplinarians in our coaching ranks and willingness to bench and fine players who don't perform to expectations.
Clements departure was not surprising to me. He was specifically known for QB footwork, mechanics, and game philosophy/demeanor. All that seemed to fly out the window for Jordan certain weeks. IMO, The two were not connecting for whatever reason.

There seems to be a paradigm shift in the genius of Hafley; when/how did he suddenly become Fritz Shurmur?
The defensive call during the last bears game will be forevermore etched in my memory as perhaps the most gutless I’ve ever witnessed. IMO, the our defensive scheme looked much like Barry’s than any new and improved genesis. And, our pass rush as y’all may remember, was essentially nonexistent.
After the watching the playoff contenders D-Coords blitzing…and blitzing. I can’t help recall the sophomoric blitz packages Hafley employed. I know he’s going nowhere, so I hope he’s watch the success of these other D-Coords.
But m, if it were my call—Saleh would be our new D-Coord.
And you’ll see me post this FA note again—Go get Max Crosby.

The winning teams have great front fours on defense.
1)The ideal free agent pick up who could help the Packers the most is Max Crosby. He is an animal who lives to hunts QB's. He alone would radically change the dynamic of the entire defense.
2) Let's beef up the OL and maybe use Big Caleb Jones as a 6th lineman like the winning teams do.
3) Sign Jaire Alexander if healthy; and draft another CB early.

One of the reasons Gutekunst let go of Davante relatively easily, though ($$ was a problem) was that the Rodgers/Davante duo was not getting them to the SB.
Now, the Offense has significantly regressed (and the passing game has really regressed). The D is better but
the O and ST languish. There is longer talk of a SB. 2025 is mentioned as the goal but I don't see it w/o better coaching.
I liked this article because it diagnosed the disjointedness and sloppy play but the big IF is whether MLF & Co.
will agree.

I think we need to call in an expert to breakdown the nuances between "significantly regressed" and "really regressed." It may involve metrics around "disjointedness" and "sloppy" that we as laymen cannot grasp.
Also, didn't the Packers offer Adams more money than the Raiders and he still chose to leave?

I second AL's mention of Clifton...[edit BIG BRAIN FART--I was referring to Mike Wahle🤦]
mentioned him the other day as well...he has put in the analytical work and has the pedigree. His passion and leadership are attributes this team desperately needs. He is a 1 life path. 1 attributes: male dominant energy, aggressive, leader.
Take acquisitions via FA & draft, hype, RAS, and misc BS and toss it in the dumpster and light a match. The field is the ultimate test. Acquire leaders that execute their roles and get the job done--leaders that make everyone around them better. If they can't, find someone who can. Gute acquired 4 players last season that fit the bill in Jacobs, McKinney, Cooper, Evans. MLF hired Hafley. If your guy (mine was Mitchell) is within reach in the first, you go get him, but IMHO bread & butter is stacking picks by preferably trading back with round 2 key. Gute's drafts have been better since '22, but given his track record is so poor in the early rounds, I'm at a loss for words why he doesn't favor the odds more in a game of numbers, particularly for a "draft & develop" franchise. If Morgan isn't going to be a tackle, you don't draft him in round 1 with his injury history, you trade back. So much talent for the taking last year after round 1, particularly on the OL.
Q1'24 I watched a lot of tape of LSU highlights re: Daniels, Nabers, Thomas Jr. I was so impressed with that trio I based my entire fantasy draft strategy on a Daniels (9th round) / McLaurin (6th round) stack. Seeing the line was +8.5 WAS, on a frigid afternoon yesterday, it took all of me not to drive to Potawatomi to place a simple money line +376 bet on WAS yesterday as I was convinced WAS would EASILY dispose of DET. Goff evaded his enemy year the overwhelming majority of the season; I expected him to finally succumb to it last night with 3 TOs...4 TO was his final tally on the night. If there's any consolation to this season, last night's outcome was it.

Much as I, as well as countless others have postulated with the facade of MLF's success, I believe there's been enough evidence post Hackett GB era that Hackett's success was more about elite talent (Rodgers, Adams, OL, Jones) making him look good.

I guess we can agree that Hackett and Sapp aren't the guys
but the article's main premise was accurate. (I'm not used to so much candidness/honesty and found it refreshing.
Hire the best positional coaches; @ least research & interview.
Perhaps pare down the existing group while @ it:
Vrabel is the Passing Game Coordinator and Ryan Mahaffey is the WR Coach?? Is that necessary?

We gotta let things go that happened what...15 years ago?
Sapp was a fiery competitor, and he spewed excellence on and off the field. I can't remember a single game where Sapp didn't pop off the screen. Whatever he had when he played, I'd love if he could put some of it into the defensive line we have in Green Bay.

@JosephR-
I loved your article. I was only tabulating the Sapp 'no's'------
Hackett is a 'no-go' tho- He and Rodgers broke me.
I would be fine with anything that would get the DL moving-bench, fine, re-structure contract, shame-lol

If you want fire, please suggest Ray Lewis as a LB coach. If anyone could level up what we have in a budding star Cooper and an underachiever in Walker, it would be him.

Just watched a 2023 Jets interview with Aaron Whitecotton-WOW. He is articulate, passionate, super knowledgeabe & has a lovely personality. He is very polite but one can feel his intensity
I hope the Packers can snag him as he will be in demand.

I think it's pretty obvious that while our running game excelled, our passing game became stale and anemic, and the offense as a whole lacked discipline. We need leadership so I would go with a new OC.

First off - Nice to see Rasul Douglas recover the onside kick - and Owen Burks play well for Phillie. Pennel for KC - Just hope that we keep the good guys ( depending upon contract value) and have room for some good free agents - especially a veteran speedster receiver. And fix the Oline with some good draft picks. People want to dump on Gute - but considering that he had some issues with the AR and his legacy ( ie salary cap / mind games etc). But he was winning MVP's and getting us to the playoffs until he didnt. As far as coaches - I dont think that we will lose either guys - too many better candidates for those teams. Now I am not impressed with special teams progress - year one maybe ok on the stat sheets - but all and all = dont feel confident. However we need to add coaches that seem to have a better handle on doing their job and organize both staffs so that there is some sort of method of handling discipline. We simply took too many penalties either through not being disciplined - ie hitting people out of bounds - or not focusing false starts . movement , downfield etc. That needs to be a focus of the staff - and if it is newbies to the organization - ie the college guys - they will take awhile to get accustomed to the NFL - system - Luckily Hafley handled it well

it's really hard to understand these packers writers or analysts. they live all day all season looking details in packers world and still come out writing nonsense.
how can you blame stenavich??????? he is the only reason jordan love is not in a mcdonald's right now!!!
stenavich lost linsley bakthiari and still had a top3 o-line with the undrafted walker, the bust myers and so on.
if stenavich leaves green bay love will be out of the nfl in 1-2 years and lafleur will b exposed as a mediocre offensive coach.
and what about hafley??? the D collapsed in all the crucial moments. the good stats are all in garbage time or when opposing teams where playing prevent and basically controllong the game.
last but not lleast we had 2 easy years but next year our schedule will change...and you all saw how the north ended up outside tha easy schedule in the post-season. they all chocked.
the only solution is ed policy to clean the house from february 2025. CLEAN THE HOUSE starting from the top, ball and gutekunst.
