The Packers Cannot Rush WR Christian Watson’s Return

It’s been a great sight for Packers fans in the early days of training camp. Wide receiver Christian Watson has been seen on the field working with the rehab group and he looks strong. The fourth-year man out of North Dakota State hopes to return early from ACL surgery, but the Packers would be wise not to rush him back and continue to be conservative with the way they handle Watson.

The Packers traded up to select Watson with the first pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his first three seasons, Watson has flashed the ability to be dominant but has also been plagued by inconsistent play.

Because of his rare combination of size and speed, however, Watson is the type of player who can create opportunities for his teammates even when he doesn’t catch the ball. Defenses feel they must account for him on every play, and he often draws double coverage. So, for example, sending Watson deep down the left side of the field could open up space underneath for a teammate running a shorter pattern even if the speedy wideout never sees the ball on the play.

Watson tore his ACL last year during the season finale against the Bears. He is presently on the PUP list which allows him to practice and work with the team as he continues his rehab.

Watson was expected to miss at least the first half of the 2025 season as he rehabs from the injury. If he starts the regular season on the PUP list, he must miss at least the first four games of the season. Then, the Packers will have a five-week window to have Watson begin practicing again. Once he does resume practice, the Packers would have three weeks to either place him on the 53-man roster or shelve him for the rest of the season.

The original timetable for his return was a minimum of 10 months, which would mean a return in mid-November at the earliest. Watson hopes he can shave a month off that projection and return to the field by mid-October which would be approximately Week 6 or 7.

“From my understanding with the advancements of medicine, we’re really open to looking at a nine-month window,” Watson told reporters on Friday. “They've been transparent with me, and I've been transparent with them about how I'm feeling. If I'm able to get to that 100 percent mark of feeling really good, then I think they’ll open me up.”

The Packers have traditionally been cautious with their injured players who are returning from similar injuries. They are usually in no rush to get a player on the field until they are certain he has fully recovered and is ready to play again.

There is no doubt Watson wants to play again as soon as possible. He’s entering the final year of his contract and wants every opportunity to prove he can take his game to the next level this year. A strong performance this year by Watson could earn him a lot of money in 2026, whether it’s with the Packers or if he signs with another team as a free agent.

The Packers are clearly a better team when Watson is on the field and healthy. He also has the tools to be a dominant receiver in the NFL; he just hasn’t been able to play at that level on a consistent basis.

GM Brian Gutekunst selected two wide receivers in the first three rounds of this year’s draft to improve an inconsistent receiver room. But even if neither Matthew Golden nor Savion Williams is ready to play a big role in the offense as rookies, the Packers need to be patient with Watson.

The worst thing they can do is rush the player back and have him reinjure his knee or another part of his body because he does too much, too soon. That could mean Watson could be lost for the season or even curtail his pro career.

So far, it seems like Watson and the Packers are on the same page with their plan. The player has been working hard, and the team is pleased with his progress. They need to keep evaluating him and not rush him back until everybody is sure he’s ready to be on the football field.

Hopefully, by then, Watson will have enough time to prove he’s worth another contract with the Packers for 2026. It would benefit both Watson and the Packers if he could reach his full potential when he returns to the team later this season, but it would be a mistake to rush him back to the lineup too soon.

There is no reason for the Packers to rush Watson back on the field. Rushing him back makes no sense. Get him 100% recovered and fully ready to play. If he can return by November that's fine and if he is 100% for the playoffs he can be a difference maker for the Packers. Imagine this Packers offense with Watson in the playoffs. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

He will be back around game 10 right before division games.

I expect another 1 , 2, 3. game from him this year ……..maybe 4 this time.

History repeats itself, whether by design or nature, so, in the case of Watson, I'd suggest not placing any value on him regardless of when he returns, as he needs to win against nature, or the rushed design of the team's needs, which doesn't bode well for any lengthy service time, as his history reads.

Are you saying they should have reasonable to no expectations of #9 due to injury history?

No, but below reasonable to controlled optimism. This way, anything in the middle is a win.

100 percent agree, Teareyes the Packers could hold off until they are sure Watson is 150 percent healthy and cleared to play, and in his fragile state only get hurt in his first game back ( god not willing ) So if Watson appears ready looks ready and they need him, get him on the field, he may surprise ( shock ) us and have a long productive career.

Like another "Back to the Future" sequel, this is the story that never goes away....

MLF and the Packers have had plenty of experience adjusting to life without Watson, similar to Alexander on defense. And they're going to get more, although this time with a couple of highly-drafted rookies to develop--and that's what's exciting to me. Golden will hopefully be that CONSISTENT deep threat we've been needing, and Williams will be running those end-arounds. Granted the threat of Watson has created opportunities for others, but if the combination of our two rookies can fill his shoes, then the need for his services will be diminished. I just don't understand the eagerness to re-sign him; if he still has trouble staying on the field and his receiving abilities are still inconsistent (as pointed out in the article), what's the rush?

And for those of you thinking he is going to be some kind of dynamo when he returns for the playoffs, well, it's possible, but remember he was pretty much a non-factor as a receiving weapon in the two games he played for the 2023 season.

He open stuff up for everyone else

Triple covered in Vikings game.

He’s a great teammate

He blocks great

He will be back better than ever.

Will see about Golden. He hasn’t proved anything yet.

Plus they have his teammate that did better than Golden in college no one is talking about.

Watson a Packer for life.

I like Watson and would not mind if he was given a second contract, but I will be surprised if that happens.

It would likely have to be a very team-friendly deal and incentive-laden vs. guaranteed money.

I would advise you enjoy whatever time he has on the field in 2025, because I don't think he's going to be a Packer for much longer. Availability is a real concern.

He was hurt in those games
San Fran game he was not full strength

Love try’s to throw him that ball that ended the game for no reason on first down.

Just maybe they make another play or two and Carlson makes the kick of his life.

As you wrote, the Packers tend to take a very conservative approach to players returning from major injuries. At times, fans and media have both questioned whether this was necessary. But this is how the team does things, and there is nothing we can do to affect this attitude.

When have the Packers EVER rushed a player coming off injury? I’m 100% confident they’ll do the right thing with Watson.

Isn't that what that goofball Martellus Bennett tried to claim? What a waste of a signing.

David Bakhtiari is the only player
I really remember alluding to feeling pressure to get back on the field.

Jaire never said he felt rushed, but the organization (MLF, MM, BG) made comments that sounded like they were pressing for him to get back on the field.

Otherwise, no other situations come to my mind.

Not sure why I'm getting downvotes for speaking facts as opposed to opinions.

I get some full grown readers of CHTV are prone to butt-hurt trauma. Must have hurt a few feelings somewhere along the line so now they're just going to downvote anything I post? That's hilarious.

He will have time to heal and then go back on the IR with a new injury.

My concern is actually Watson rushing himself back as he is playing for a new contract and likely wouldn't want to only be able to sign a 1-year prove-it deal next year.

Watson brings two big things to the offense. He's a 20 yard/catch downfield threat. If he's lined up, you'd better have a plan to get him from getting behind everybody.

The second thing is that he's a very good blocker, probably the best of all the WRS. I've seen him stick guys good on some Jacobs runs. We got Golden who can replace the long TD threat, but replacing what he gives on the other plays is going to be harder. He only had 33 touches last year, on 53 targets. But he played over 500 snaps. What was he doing on 90% of the time he wasn't a target?

Watson is a unique talent. It's rare to have his combination of size, speed, and blocking ability. When healthy, he adds a different dimension to the offense.

I hope he comes back 100% healthy, and has a great season. He would make an already good offense into a great offense.

I say your all wrong.
If he wants to go.
They should play him.

The two obvious reasons are
1.Threat
2. Free Agency.
I say they're going to lose him no matter what!

They have babied him long enough.
So why should it matter to the packers?

Let this be on his shoulders.
All gas No brakes. Period!

When Christian Watson's dad says Christian is ready, he'll be ready. Just keep your eyes open for what Christian's dad has to say about this injury ordeal and you'll know when he's healed up and ready to play.
