The Packers Need More From Rashan Gary Down the Stretch
By GilMartin

Rashan Gary led the Packers in sacks last season. The former University of Michigan star got off to a strong start rushing the passer this season, but his production has dropped off in recent weeks. With the Packers facing a daunting schedule in the final seven weeks of the season, they will need more from Gary down the stretch.
The addition of Micah Parsons was supposed to benefit Gary. Despite his high draft position, Gary had never recorded double digit sacks in a season. His play against the run had improved, but most opposing offenses made blocking Gary their priority in recent seasons, so he often faced double teams when rushing the passer. With Parsons on board, the double teams would shift to the former Cowboys star giving Gary more opportunities to face single coverage and get after the quarterback.
The addition of Parsons had an immediate impact on Gary. He had 4.5 sacks in the first three games this season and now has 7.5 sacks on the season, matching his total for all of 2024. His career high of 9.5 sacks in a season was set back in 2021, and he is just two sacks away from matching it with seven games to go.
But Gary has slowed down over the past three games. He has not recorded a sack since the Packers win in Pittsburgh back on October 26th. In fact, he hasn’t even recorded a quarterback hit in the last three games this season and has just two pressures total for those three contests.
Gary’s snap count has also gone down over the last three games. Against the Giants, he played a season-low 54.2 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Backup Kingsley Enagbare actually saw more game action than Gary did.
Head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the issue during his Wednesday press conference this week. “I would say it's a byproduct of the game,” LaFleur explained. “He's never been a huge snap count guy, if you look at the course of his career. But every game could unfold a little bit differently, and I think [Enagbare] has been doing a heck of a job. I'd say it's more a credit to how [Enagbare] has gone in there and done his job.”
Another factor has been the increased predictability of the Green Bay pass rush this season. With the addition of Parsons, Jeff Hafley has been very comfortable rushing the front four and having seven men back in coverage. Last season the defense also usually rushed four players, but Hafley often put six or seven men near the line of scrimmage and tried to make offenses guess which four were going to blitz the quarterback. This season, the pass rush has been more predictable.
In the first three games, the pass rush was very effective. But as the league got more game footage of what the Packers were doing, opposing coaches were able to make adjustments and alter their play calling accordingly. Opposing quarterbacks are also trying to release the ball quickly to neutralize the impact of the Green Bay pass rush. That is a tradeoff that Hafley is willing to make because it limits big plays and forces offenses to march downfield on long drives which are more difficult to sustain.
Gary also needs to return to his more disruptive, earlier season form. He has the ability to make a big an impact on any game he plays in. Gary did come up with a big fumble recovery in the win over the Giants that helped the Packers clinch the win in the final minute of the game, but the team needs more from him and the other pass rushers not named Micah Parsons.
A combination of mixing up the pass rush formations and strategies and a return to form for Gary would go a long way towards helping the Packers navigate the difficult part of their schedule. The potential return of a healthy Lukas Van Ness could also give offenses more to think about and further free up Gary to make more plays.
Regardless of the reasons, the Packers need more production from Gary and the other pass rushers besides Parsons if they hope to win enough games to qualify for the playoffs this year.

Gary will be fine. Glad they've been able to keep his snap counts down and save some for the tail end of the season.

I hope you are right. I wasn't thrilled to see us drafting him
so high but he kind of won me over. He needs to get more
productive in this run to the playoffs. We have big decisions
to make in June and if Gary hasn't upped his game...

I agree. Looks like salary cap casualty next year.

Gary and E. Jenkins will likely be gone giving us cap relief, I think we can get out of Hobbs deal with some cap savings too. Gary has been a solid player. We'd hoped for more but looking at players available after the first 10 picks of 2019 draft, there wasn't a lot of first round talent that year.

I am a Michigan fan and I was not happy when Pack drafted him at 12 or whatever it was. Overrated and over hyped at Michigan and doesn't seem to have much of a motor.

Gary shows up when he is being watched by cameras, playing against a contender or playing in Lambeau-

Two of the last 3 games were in Lambeau and he didn't show up. For what he is paid, he needs to be a concern for every OC from the other team. Since he has been in GB, he has 2 amazing games and 3 better than average games a year while his face is on the side of a milk carton in all the other games. If he wasn't on such a huge contract, I could forgive this.

You're right-
Neither he nor Alexander behaved well after their 2nd contracts-I think Gary is essentially a low character guy. I wonder what Parsons thinks of him.
He's never above pounding his chest when he makes an occasional sack

"Gary is essentially a low character guy."
I've never heard this from anyone other than you. The guy has never been in trouble that I'm aware of. Never heard any locker room concerns.
It's pretty shitty to call into question someone's character unless you have examples to back that up. Please enlighten us.

that's ridiculous...he's a very good character guy , has been since college....give me a situation where he's been "low character"..??? Pretty nasty thing to say about anyone without some proof...

And, of course, she doesn't respond. That says a lot more about her character than it does about Gary's.

I wasn't referring to his character, I was calling out his lack of production.

I never said you did. My comment was directed at NFLfan who referred to Rashan Gary as a "low character" guy.
I'm still waiting on her response.

We have one of the top scoring defenses in the league. Currently 7th. You would have me believe this is being done without contributions by the guy who is on the field for 63% of the defensive snaps and is #8 in tackles.
That doesn't add up for me. He has more tackle than Parsons in fewer snaps. He has 7.5 sacks, Parsons has 8.0. He has 13 QB hits to Parsons 17. If Parsons is an exceptional player (and he is) then Gary is not far behind.

Hard to compare Gary to Parsons Leather, when one of the two is always doubled teamed and sometime tripled not to mention Parsons awareness of the play developing and the way he redirects himself through blockers is unmatched by any Packer on defense... I though the Packers were moving Gary around the front some, giving him different looks and taking advantage of his perusing ability, then that vanished. Gary was also giving up the edge for big yardage on several occasions so he may be more cognizant of the way the play is developing rather than charging up field taking away sacks recently. Gary has always been a team leader and high character player for the Packers...

I get that. It's valid. But I think that you can't make the argument that Parsons is All-Universe, and the guy on the other side, with more tackles in fewer snaps and 0.5 fewer sacks is All-Dumpster. Gary's a good player for us, run and pass.

Unfortunately Gary's M.O. the last couple of seasons has been to disappear in the sack department for stretches, sometimes four or five games.
"He's never been a huge snap guy..." Well, he's getting paid to be. You look at some of the top pass rushers in the league like Garrett, Parsons, Watt, and Crosby, and they're on the field the vast majority of the time--roughly on average 15% more than Gary.
"The potential return of a healthy Lukas Van Ness could also give offenses more to think about..." As always, seeing is believing. Less thinking and more tangible results are what we're after here.
After all the draft and monetary capital we've spent on the pass rush the past few years, I can't believe we're still in wanting here.

Play Sorrell more down the road. Yes, the drafting has been dismal and the lack of CB depth will probably bite them in the Playoffs. See how Hafley brings it the next three Games.

"The Packers Need More From Rashan Gary"...
I've heard this mantra before, oh, since the start of his time in GB.
He's had a moment or two, but the need of more has dictated.
Don't deny, but accept him for what he isn't, a top 10 Edge getting paid like one.

Gary is who he is, good but not a game changer. Van Ness being out has played a bigger roll than anybody is saying. This team is getting healthy soon, it could be a very exciting second half of season!

Agree completely on LVN. When he was healthy, they were collapsing the pocket and getting the QB's off their spot consistently, as well as playing better run D. That Carolina and the Giants had some success running and wanted to shorten the game, run D was priority one, so not as many rush opportunities as I'm sure the entire DL would want.
Time for GB to get up a couple scores, make Minny one dimensional, and take McCarthy out to the deep water.

According to the metrics folks Gary has only rushed on 56 snaps over the last 3 games. The rest have been run oriented. So he’s not even rushing the passer on the majority of snaps. The same is true for Enagbare, who has taken the biggest chunk of snaps excluding Gary and Parsons.
LaFleur’s rather convoluted comments this week on the subject seemed to suggest that, so I looked. It’s pretty clear that, Parsons aside mostly, the DEs have been tasked with shoring up the run game due to the struggles of the DTs. Those DTs haven’t delivered pressure either.
That’s almost certainly why we aren’t getting rushes home, generally, as well as just Gary. Simply put, unless we are blitzing we are only really be rushing one or two players seriously.
That’s a survival tactic perhaps, but it’s not one I see as a winning one long term. This D needs rush. Then again, we’ve been playing with an O that just won’t give us a lead. This perhaps illustrates the hidden consequences of the O not putting it together.

Yeah, I think that's a really skewed view. Gary plays in the base., 1st down, defense. Because of our DEs, he's the best run defender we have., and our second best, Van Ness, has been unavailable. Enagbare has filled in well. You don't stop the run game with two DTs; you stop it with the efforts of 11 men. Gary has only rushed on 56 snaps, and yet he has 7.5 sacks to Parsons 8. Yes, Parsons is drawing other blockers and making it easier for them, but Gary has been productive in the pass rush. Gary has been more productive on the run game than Parsons.
We don't play Parsons on first down very often, because we want to try to keep him fresh for that 4th quarter, and for obvious passing downs. We don't need him to lock up with 325 lb OTs in the run game.
I don't think you understand what the Packers defense is trying to accomplish. They'd rather be a good pass defense than a good run defense. For them, I think it's more about forcing the QB to throw early, or off platform, than it is about getting sacks. We're ranked 6th in QB hits and 3rd in Adjusted Net yards...1st in Net Yards/attempt. To me, that suggests a pretty decent pass defense.
We didn't keep Slaton and we traded Clark for Parsons. Of course our run defense isn't going to be as good, but we improved the pass defense. We're ELITE (top 4) in some areas. #7 scoring. We're doing what we want to do on defense, with the exception of we aren't getting takeaways..

Gary is 10th in the league in sacks right now, he’s a very good run defender, and the packers haven’t been playing with much of a lead in the last several weeks.
Things will be fine and the pass rush is going to look quite a bit better when the offense improves and these guys can pin their ears back and rush.

If the team is to advance to the later playoff rounds, the offense is going to need to get some leads and let the defense do its thing. The offense is the issue, that's solely on LaFleur.
Leatherhead
November 21, 2025 at 11:12 am
Well, not solely. He's not the guy dropping passes. You can design a good play, you can practice it, but it's still up to the players to execute when it counts.
When the offense runs the way LaFleur designed it, it scores enough points to win.

Gary should take some inside looks and bring in a faster guy to work the edge.

Definitely . He’s too stiff to be an effective edge. Same with Van Ness.

He’s a below average run defender . Teams run to his side to take advantage of it.

November 20, 2025 at 10:48 pm
Well, you're completely wrong, but feel free to tell me about it.
Gary had the highest run stop win percentage of all edge rushers in 2024 (37%).
He's not on that pace in 2025, but he's still considered one of the better run-stopping edge defenders in the league.

Number 1 draft pick and “he’s never been a huge snap count guy”—seriously?!?!
Many of us were hesitant about him, but I had cautiously changed my mind when his play began to improve.
Now he’s performing disappearing acts again.
C’mon Gary—make some noise!
Go Packers!!!

We really, really need him to crank it up. With Micah getting 99% of the attention and double and triple teams, Rashan has opportunity staring him square in the eyes.
Does he raise his hand to come out of the game way too often? I have no data, but it sure looks like that to me.
egbertsouse
November 20, 2025 at 07:51 pm
Yes, he does. He also stands and watches plays that are going the other way instead of chasing like Bosa, Watt or Parsons do. He has an intermittent motor.
