We Finally Have a Backup Quarterback We Can Trust
Packer fans can feel comfortable with Malik Willis on the field.
By GregMeinholz

How often have you watched a game and seen the starting Quarterback go down with an injury, and the backup Quarterback comes in and still leads the team to victory? It can be a rarity. But lately, in the NFL, it's become more common. Jake Browning kept the Bengals in playoff contention with Joe Burrow going down with seven games left in the season, Josh Dobbs had an improbable situation leading the Vikings to victory in 2023 five days after being traded, and one of my recent favorites is Tyler Huntley during his time with the Ravens who always seemed to give Baltimore a chance to win despite Lamar Jackson going down. Given the Green Bay Packers backup QB history, these dependable number two's always made me gaze longingly at the TV wishing I could have that type of confidence if my QB ever went down.
Graham Harrell, Tim Boyle, DeShone Kizer, and Scott Tolzien are a few backup quarterbacks that Packer fans have endured in the last 10 years. None of them gave even a prayer of confidence entering a game if the starter went down. Some of them even did have to take over for Aaron Rodgers a time or two and the results weren't pretty at all. Outside of Jordan Love's drafting in 2020 and a few years of Matt Flynn, the Packers' backup QB situation was pretty dismal during Aaron Rodgers' tenure. The idea of Aaron Rodgers having to sit out even a series or two was a nightmare. The joke "What's Matt Flynn up to?" would always pop up on social media if Rodgers got hurt following Flynn's final departure after the 2014 season. Then in the 2024 season, with no confidence in Sean Clifford or rookie Michael Pratt to be QB2, the Packers made possibly the best trade of the season so far sending a 7th round pick to Tennessee for Malik Willis.
Barely being with the team two weeks, Willis was thrown into the fire having to start for the Packers in week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts. He finished the game 12 of 14 for 122 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions and 41 yards rushing. But most of all, a victory. The next week, 13 of 19, 202 yards and a touchdown, zero interceptions, and 73 yards rushing with a touchdown. Suddenly Malik Willis was practically a legend despite being in Green Bay for only a month. Some even teased whether or not he should start over Jordan Love when Love was healthy enough to return. Then a month after Love returned, Willis was called in to relieve Love once again entering the game with 12 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and the Packers up 13-10. Willis was victorious again, this time winning the game with a clutch 51-yard pass to Jayden Reed to put the Packers in field goal range to win in the final seconds 30-27.
Suddenly, the Packers have a backup Quarterback that fans can trust to win them games.

Changing the Offense to bring out the best
One thing is for sure when Malik Willis is in the game, the offensive gameplan changes. Matt LaFleur definitely switches things up to focus on running the football more often. This seems like it would be common sense for putting in a backup QB right? Run the football to take the pressure off the backup and hopefully open up the pass a bit with defenses stacking the box. Well, in the case of Malik Willis, this can work to his strengths as well. Being a mobile Quarterback, Willis can take the ball on RPOs and do some damage with his legs. In three games, Willis has 137 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 attempts. It's pretty handy to have a Quarterback that averages 8.5 yards per carry.
Handing the ball to running backs, keeping it on RPOs, don't forget Willis can still throw the ball too. Once that defense starts catching on to the ball staying on the ground, it's the perfect time to run a perfectly executed play-action and put the ball over their heads. This was evident in Willis' 51-yard play-action pass to Jayden Reed that put the Packers in field goal range to win against the Jaguars. Jacksonville had a safety lined up next to the linebackers and one safety deep, once the ball was snapped, eight defenders bit on the play-action stepping up until they got wise to Watson and Doubs running routes and turned around completely ignoring Jayden Reed running a leak wheel route right under their noses and ending up wide open for the big play. That's the power of the play-action with a dynamic QB like Malik Willis.

In all honesty, I wish they would lean on the running game sometimes the same with Jordan Love as they do with Malik Willis.
If Jordan Love is unable to play this Sunday, it won't be an easy task for Malik Willis to dethrone a team as talented as Detroit is. But if there's one positive to the way the offense is called when Willis is on the field, it's that the game is slowed down and it would result in keeping Detroit's dynamic offense off the field. It also gives the defense plenty of rest time. If the Packers' defense can steal a possession or two and Willis can put some points on the board, the Packers may still have a chance against Detroit. That's well more than we've ever said about our other backup Quarterbacks over the years.
Willis is under contract through the 2025 season. Unless a team comes knocking at the end of this year offering the Packers a nice trade package for the backup QB, Willis will get the chance to spend an offseason sharpening his skills with Packers' QB whisperer Tom Clements. After a rough start to his career, Willis may have a very bright future. Hopefully, he spends at least another year of that future with the Packers as the beneficiary.

Credit to Gute and the scouting department for having their eyes on all possibly available options should their draft picks not work out, and Gute moved like lightning to make this heist. Even the coaches have been surprised by how well he has played, and you couldn't have asked more from him at this point. I was fully confident when he entered the Jaguars game--no lie.
Still wondering why the Titans invested a third-round pick for him and didn't have the patience or the necessary coaching acumen/personnel to develop him; they're looking rather silly now.

I'm praising Gute for this pick-up.
Gute just got a All-pro QB for a seventh pick.
The comparison is Brett Favre from Atlanta.
Best pick up ever by Gute.

First time I can recall you finding anything worthy in Gute, Stockholder, and while I myself wouldn't go quite so
far, if you had said 'best trade for a seventh rounder by Gute ever' you would have me hook, line, and sinker.
Well done.

All pro? After two and a half games? Favre like acquisition? Sorry, it was a savvy move but not up to that level…

I am thrilled the Packers got Willis. He is just so smooth with his running and throwing style.
Best of all...he appears to have a tremendous attitude and team-first mentality.
I hope the Pack can keep his as long as possible...I am being selfish. He makes it very easy to cheer for him.

The Packers should be able to get a 1st round draft pick for Willis next year for sure.

I'm a big JL fan....but he's only played good in 1 game this season against AZ. I would like to see ML give Willis a bigger serving of the gameplan and see what he can do with it. Something is gonna have to pull better play from JL and competition for playing time may be what it takes. I expected JL to hit the ground running and play where he left off in the playoffs last season. The Packers have been sorely underwhelmed by his poor execution so far this year and we are nowhere near executing good enough to win the North much less drive deep into the playoffs like we did last season....so far I see massive regression from JL and the rest of the WR corp. Kraft is the lone bright spot on offense followed by Reed and as of late Doubs coming around. Jacobs has been running pretty good also. Looking forward to better play all around...part of it may be the play calling no allowing for fluid offensive operations. We have enough offensive talent to run teams into the ground and we are hemorrhaging all over the field....

Love certainly hasn't "hit the ground running" in 2024, but he's managed to lead/tie for most passing TDs on the season heading into last week despite having missed 2 full games. That's pretty impressive for a guy who has "only played good in 1 game this season." Just think what he would do if he played up to your standards for half of the games this season? He'd probably set all the single season passing records, I guess..?
There hasn't been regression, there has been injury and different outcomes on tightly contested throws.

If you throw INT's at a high enough rate...Your TD's tend to be nullified. It's not fun watching your team hickup play to play and underperform....FAR below last years late run standard...Go watch a few good games...from last season. Eagles game on was putrid.

Nobody is giving up a 1st round pick for a backup QB.

He will start in the NFL after next year. Count on it.

Yeah, and the Jets signed Randall Cobb.
Nobody will trade a 1st round pick for a back up QB.
..and if some desperate team does pick up Willis to make him a starter, watch how long that experiment lasts. You can't struggle with working through your progressions and maintain a starting QB job in the NFL. It's not sustainable.

October 31, 2024 at 07:03 pm
you mean a backup like say, a drunk third string Brett Favre? I seem to remember a first rounder being the going rate.
Garoppolo brought a second round pick from SF to New England - he was a back-up.

You don't understand what I'm saying here.
It's not that a team won't trade a first round pick for a player who is currently a backup QB.
It's that a team won't trade a first round pick for a player who doesn't have the tools to be a starting QB- Willis is a back up QB. That's what he is.
Bitternotsour
October 31, 2024 at 09:52 pm
I completely understand what you're saying. It's just that even though repeat yourself endlessly, you're still wrong about Willis. You. Are. Wrong. About. Willis.
You wanted to keep our previous back-ups, because in your mind they had the requisite "tools" to win in the NFL. You are just wrong and you continually double down on your ridiculous take. Maybe you should sit out any analysis of Willis, because you just aren't seeing what is happening directly in front of your face.

Yeah, the thing is, I am directly relating exactly what is happening on the field.
This is going to be one of those long term things.. because you won’t take the time to see it or are unable to discern it. Willis struggles with the ability to work through progressions. Period. Always has. And it’s why the titans gave up on trying to make him a starting QB. It’s why he runs RPOs and it’s why when he does throw it, it’s nearly always first read or quick hitter. If the first guy isn’t there, he tucks it. I’ve seen him come back to a 2nd read perhaps 3 times. I haven’t seen anything in green and gold that looks like he’s ever even looked at #3 or deeper.

I think you can win games with Willis. He can run an offense, protect the ball, run and keep the team moving, and complete enough throws to get points on the board. What else would you want from a backup QB??
I'm not getting this "trade Willis" for a draft pick, even a first round pick. Who could we possibly get for Willis that would help us as much as he already has? No, I think we're damn fortunate to have Willis, and we should keep him around.

Backup qb does not equal starting qb.
You may note the comment that started this was someone stating the packers will get a 1st round pick in trade for Willis, and I stated nobody will trade a first round pick for a backup qb…. Because that’s what Willis is, a back up qb talent.

October 30, 2024 at 08:46 pm
If he plays I want him to be able to throw down field. LeFleur needs to stop the little dink passes and screens. This guy can throw, let him.
Oppy
October 31, 2024 at 12:13 pm
Willis has an NFL-caliber arm. What he lacks is NFL caliber ability to work through progressions.
The other thing you must consider is that the Minnesota Vikings are frauds.
Bitternotsour
October 31, 2024 at 07:04 pm
you keep saying that and you're still wrong (about Willis). The Vikings however are frauds - fact check: TRUE.
Oppy
October 31, 2024 at 08:41 pm
I'm not wrong and again, I'm sorry you can't see it.
There's a reason Willis was traded away and there's a reason why the Packers offense is executed the way it's executed when Willis is on the field.
There's an entire history on film that backs up my assertions. Shoulder shrug, throws hands up, there's nothing more I can say about it. I keep saying the same thing because it's true and easily verifiable if you just watch.

the team will probably trade Willis before the deadline like they did Douglas. who needs a valuable player that fills a need?
Bitternotsour
October 30, 2024 at 10:52 pm
I'd take a first and second for him now. I like the third we got for Douglas, perhaps you noticed that the team improved after he was traded. Weird, right? Trade a guy we weren't going to re-sign, and then actually improve after he leaves. Unpossible!

who's giving us a third round pick for a zone corner who was rescued from a practice squad who is on his last 3 months of contract?

Who's doing Stupid Certification these days? I know it was contracted out to Booz Allen Hamilton early in the GWB Administration, but have lost track since. Initial cert was $125, then $30 every five years IIRC.

I realize that my credential may have lapsed, but i was certified for the last 25 years of my career. I feel like the technology really hasn't changed all that much and that I'm probably just as qualified as I was pre-retirement to make these sorts of calls. Just because we retire does not mean that we've ceased to have our experience and lifetime of assessments. I'm not ready to go quietly into the night, unless by night you mean after 11:00 pm, cause honestly who stays up that late.

You want a quarterback you CAN'T trust?
Go way back in Packers history and perhaps a few of the "Old Timers" here, like me will remember the 1995 season and the game against the dreaded Vikings. Favre got injured and went out of the game and Ty Detmer, the back up broke a finger and in come one of the more infamous 3rd string quarterbacks in Packer history...Theron Joseph Rubley aka TJ Rubley.
The score was tied with less than a minute to go and the Packers had the ball on the Minnesota 38 yard line and at the line Rubley changed the 3rd and one quarterback sneak which was called from the sidelines by Holmgren to a pass which the Vikings intercepted and returned in Green Bay territory. Then with the score still tied at 24 each, the Vikings kicked the the winning field goal with three seconds left on the clock.
Of course Rubley was cut that week, never to play another game in the NFL.

This was completely unsolicited.
I do NOT want a quarterback I can't trust.
Why ask if you're just going to Rubley me regardless?

From what I have seen, Malik taking over for Jordon won the game. At this point in the season you don't want to change horses mid stream, but in the long run I see Malik at least in the conversation for the number one spot. It is a good problem to have for the Packers. I would not even entertain the thought of trading him. Tennessee really screwed up letting him go for practically nothing. Currently we have two premium starters at QB. Other teams have successfully used two QBs in the same game on certain plays. I hope management can think out of the box to take advantage of Malik's unique skill sets. One thing is certain ....He is a playmaker!

Tenn...as well as many NFL teams are poorly managed/ poorly coached and are missing a lot of talent on the OL, RB and WR positions. We have a pretty well rounded team now and it its set up for success by ANY quality QB. That's why JL should be executing better and not making INT's....and that's why Willis has every player he needs to succeed while JL is hurt... again. GPG

Packers are not trading Willis while Love is not 100% and I don't see that for many weeks, minimum. And he is not back to last years form and has picked up the bad habit of throwing interceptions. So how could there not be conversation about who is better?
I don't see how Love starts this week after the pain he was in so we will have a lot more info to go on after the bye. If he does start without solid legs under him, we might be in big trouble. And so might he. I hope his ego is not already so big to risk that.
