What Position Group Has the Most Depth Concern for the Packers?

The Green Bay Packers enter the 2021 NFL season as a team expected to contend for a trip to the Super Bowl. The Packers have a deep and talented roster full of Pro Bowl-level players on both sides of the ball including the reigning NFL MVP at quarterback.

While the Packers overall roster is deep and talented, there are still areas of concern. But what position group on the roster gives the team the most concern if injuries strike? Right now, the biggest concern for depth is at cornerback.

That’s not to say cornerback is lacking talent and the position is deeper now than it has been in recent years. But it is also the position with a lot of question marks and a critical position on the defense that cannot afford to lose many players near the top of the depth chart without resulting in a large drop off in play.

The Packers are set with Jaire Alexander as their top cover corner. Alexander is one of the best cover corners in the league today and he can effectively limit the effectiveness of the opposing team’s top receiver for large parts of a game.

But after that, the group is full of question marks. The second starter at cornerback is Kevin King. The Packers surprised a lot of people when they re-signed King this offseason on what is essentially a one-year, prove-it deal with several voidable years to ease the cap hit.

Throughout his career, King has been a very inconsistent player. At times, he makes big plays and his size and reach but at other times, he gives up large gains because he has trouble tracking the ball or staying with a receiver.

He also has a long injury history and has never played a full, 16-game schedule in his four NFL seasons. Last year, King played in just 11 games and that was only the second time in his career he reached double digits in games played in a season. King has only played 41 out of a possible 64 regular-season NFL games.

First-round pick Eric Stokes has been battling King for the starting spot opposite Alexander. Stokes has elite speed but is still working on his technique. He saw only limited action during the preseason. In training camp, Stokes was being targeted by Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams as they tried to help the rookie get better by repeatedly going up against two of the league’s best in practice day after day.

Stokes was drafted to upgrade the starting cornerback duo but it is unclear how ready he is to take over as a starter in the NFL. The coaching staff is hoping that he will be able to assume a larger role by the end of the season, but as of right now, he has yet to officially beat out King for the starting job.

Chandon Sullivan is the nickel back and the primary “star” corner. In 2019, Sullivan had a strong season as the Packers dime back. Last year, he was promoted to nickel back and he struggled at times. Sullivan has the talent and football smarts to have a bounce back season in 2021 but he is best suited to playing inside and not as boundary corner.

Behind the top four, the Packers have players on their roster who are talented and have potential but probably aren’t ready for significant play on defense just yet. Rookie fifth-round pick Shemar Jean-Charles is making a big jump from playing at Appalachian State in college to the NFL.

During the preseason, Jean-Charles struggled in coverage at times against reserves and players who have since been cut from NFL rosters or placed on the practice squad. This is all to be expected, but the question is whether Jean-Charles is ready to step in and play significant snaps on defense if injuries strike.

The other cornerback on the initial 53-man roster is Isaac Yiadom. The former Boston College star is starting his fourth NFL season but he’s already playing for his third team. Yiadom was originally drafted by the Broncos in the third-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons in Denver and then was traded to the New York Giants before the 2020 season. The Giants traded him to Green Bay last month.

In the preseason, Yiadom struggled in coverage. In his defense, he was new to the Packers and was still learning the team’s system and getting familiar with his teammates. But his track record in the NFL thus far leaves a lot to be desired and if he is called on to play extended snaps on defense, he will have to be significantly better than he was against the Jets and Bills in August.

There is a lot of talent at cornerback on the Packers roster this season but the ability of the depth players to step up and play significant snaps on defense is in doubt. The Packers are hoping that won’t be necessary, because if it does happen, there are a lot of questions that will have to be answered quickly.

We showed last year that we could score points even when we were missing Jones,or Lazard, or Adams, or Bakhtiari. I expect the same.

Defensively, I think we’d miss our starters in the secondary.

If key CBs go down we may have an issue, but I still look at this ILB group and don't have much confidence at all even with the starters on the field.

ILB is the biggest mystery. One new-to-us starter and one 2nd year with a rookie and 2 mostly STs players, one of whom scared the hell out of me on D. Not just depth overall but who and how we will use them. I could see a lot of box safety snaps as we have good box safety prospects in Black and Scott.

The runner up is deep S. Our starters are great but I see no candidate to replace one should an injury happen. Yiadom, Black, Scott don’t fill me with confidence back there. I don’t see an option in the PS either.

I have more concerns at S with only 4 (I don't see Yiadom playing S...and I hope little if any CB!) than at CB, simply because as you observe they play in the box so often and at hybrid. I really liked Black's play in the preseason but Scott hasn't shown much at all.

It was a surprise Uphoff didn't make the PS but I guess Gaines, in spite of his awful tackling, was viewed as better in pass coverage.

To me they are all box safety types. Sines was decent in coverage close, but just lost deep. Black’s strength is also close to the line. Scott might be the least challenged deep but hardly convincing. Uphoff was terrible in coverage. I mentioned Yiadom because he can’t play CB, presumably must be seen as capable of something on D and supposedly tackles well. I don’t see any other DB with deep potential.

Any news on the severity of Redmond's injury? With this being the last year of his deal I figured they would have released him with an injury settlement by now where he could be potentially resigned later, unless their plan is to keep him on IR and try to work out a deal for next year while they still have his rights.

Few teams can lose the starting QB to an injury and not see a big dropoff. Only a couple of veteran QB's could come in to win games. That's why keeping your quarterback healthy with a great OL is so important.

Isn't a huge talent drop off the case with any NFL team that loses an all pro? My view is the Packers would actually be in better shape than most NFL teams losing their starting QB because of the talent of the other 10 and their prowess running the ball and utilizing the RBs and TEs in both run and pass.

I don't think Gute brought in enough defensive play makers. Were basically the same group of defenders that we had least season but with a new D-Coach. Will our defense improve..? Will find out on 9/14. I hope I'm wrong but I think our defense is to soft...

By my count Gutey brought in 2 DL, 2 ILBs, 2 OLBs, and 3 CBs...9 new D guys. How many would be enough?

The greatest increase in D performance will come from the new DC's system and how he plays to the talents of the 11 on the field.

Pettine always preached playing to talent but rarely followed his own advice. He was all about stopping the pass, especially chunk pass plays at the expense of run D. The main reason for the D "improving" last year in the D rankings was due to the offense keeping them off the field. I read the Packer D played the fewest D snaps of any team in the NFL last year.

Barry, if he learned anything with the Rams, will be creating third and long. It will be interesting to see how Barry plays the run and creates QB pressure. LA almost always plays with 2 ILBs...even on passing downs. Pettine would play with 1 ILB and rush with 2 DL and 2 OLB...even then, making P. Smith play pass D on pass downs.

If the Packers can generate constant QB pressures, the D could be pretty good. I also like the assistant D coaches Barry has.

One place where the defense regressed in 2020 was in forcing TOs. 2019, when they were really good taking the ball away, was an anomaly...and it probably helped them to 13 wins over 10. This hasn't been a good takeaway defense for years. If Barry can get these guys regularly forcing TOs (catch the ball, Jaire!), that will make a huge difference.

Pettine went from D by disrupting the QB to a D focused on stopping big plays. Less focus on attacking both the QB and the ball. The result was big plays went down but a D that struggled to get off the field. That’s a big part of that drop off.

I agree with gkarl. After Rodgers we have a backup who has yet to dress for an NFL game never mind actually taking a snap.

Beyond QB we don't know what level of depth we have on the DL, ILB or in our secondary. Our starters our pretty solid in each of those groups but after that we have ????? We'll find out soon enough. Thanks, Since '61

Dressing for two NFL games and actually taking many snaps in them gave me confidence Love can play and move the team efficiently. Sure, he made two bad plays, but he will learn from them.

I feel better about Love than I felt about Rodgers during his first two years.

No one considers preseason games as actual NFL games. They don't count for anything. And if we do then we should be very concerned that we average 10.5 PPGs while was the QB. Preseason games are glorified practices and we have overhyped our preseason QBs many times before including Kizer, Tolzien and Hundley to name just a few and they played in 4 preseason games each year. They were all preseason MVPs and considered to be the next Rodgers based on overhyping their preseason performances. I'm not sure if any are still even in the league.

Love may prove to be a great QB in a few seasons but at this point for this season I would not want to turn our season over to him. Thanks, Since '61

Until Love can read it fast and deliver the dime, you better pray Rodgers stays upright. It's bad enough enduring the scrub talk review of the minimalist version of pre-season football, but in ten days it is reality time in Packerland.

Thanks for your interesting article, Gil.

The most important position for the Packers and almost every NFL team is the starting quarterback and if we are in a Super Bowl or Bust mode this year, we cannot afford to lose Rodgers. While I have confidence that Jordan Love will provide solid quarterbacking in the coming years, if we want to win the Lombardi Trophy this year, we do need Aaron Rodgers behind center. Thus, we are truly down to one player who cannot be replaced in the quarterback group if we hope to "Win It All".

My biggest concern is the OL for the first 6 or so weeks. Starting a rookie center and guard is scary and could cause some real issues. Meyers has a very big job under center for Arod. He has to read the defense, tell the line what to do and learn Arod's cadence. That's a lot to ask for from a rookie. You know darn well D-Coordinators will be stunting and trying their best to screw with those two rookies heads!

One big question I have on King is whether he has regained mobility that he’d clearly lost later last year. Impossible to know since we haven’t seen him. That is critical to his value to the team.

CB and it’s not close. Imagine the horror if Jaire goes down. King who is bad and Stokes, a rookie who hasn’t got great cover skills as your starting corners. Every WR in the NFL will drool at the thought of matching up with either of them.

Even if Jaire doesn’t miss a snap all year the other side is a hole. King will be targeted til he can’t stand up anymore.

This is a bad group and I really expected Gute to find someone better than Yadum.

That’s the problem, it is no different than last year. We’ll win a lot of games because of a sensational offense but come playoffs when they’ll have to cover Evans, Godwin, Antonio Brown and Gronk. And then Tyreke Hill and Kelce. Disaster looms.

Remember Tampa crushed us during the year not just in the championship.

I realize a lot can happen til then and maybe Stokes turns into Jaire 2… hopefully, but this team would lose seven out of ten to Tampa mainly because we aren’t good enough to cover their powerful offensive weapons. I said exactly this before the NFC championship and got the same response I’m getting now. But we’re 13-3. Rodgers and Davante. Jaire. No, King was a known weakness and he cost us the game. Not alone, but surely did his part. Or didn’t to be more exact.

We’ll revel in the Rodgers magic as we almost certainly head to the playoffs. We’ve been there, Rodgers has been there. But then that same old script which I think still needs a rewrite. For once it would be nice if Rodgers went to the championship game with the better defense.

Brady won and Rodgers lost even though Rodgers is the better QB. Brady won because he had the better D. He still does.

It is my view had the Packers had Bakht at LT and move Jenks back to LG...and have AJ for for the second half, I believe the Packers make the SB. They weren't exactly "crushed" in the NFCCG, only losing by 5 points.

And having to play a banged up King also spoke volume about lack of CB depth.

Better CB depth today? Yep.

A year ago we were all shitting our pants because the Packers did nothing to help themselves beat San Fran in the playoffs...

In the end, there's only so much you can do with limited resources. Nobody knows who will be waiting for the Packers in the playoffs (assuming they get there). The Packers sold their souls to this approach (winning with offense) years ago. They've got to find a way to make it work, even against Tampa (if they turn out to be there).

I don’t see how the CB group is worse. Stokes is a better athlete than Jackson or Hollman. That’s a step up for a start. If Alexander gets injured then obviously we get worse but we have a better athlete opposite the other starter last year. If King has regained mobility then that is a bug plus. It’s no secret he was hobbled. This year though, we might have a coach willing to play a healthy player instead if he gets hurt. Sullivan too looks more healthy. He also has a back up. Depth players typically aren’t as good or ready. But the depth seems better this year. Yiadom i assume is a ST choice. Still not sure what we have in him otherwise, but he did start 10 games, so one presumes some of his failings were a lack of clue as to the system.

Special Teams. Sucked last year and I don’t see (yet) dynamic players. Long snapper is erratic, and no gunners to speak of. The returners are new and untested at the NFL level. The two (or three) kickers look good but that’s all.

I suspect they kept extra ILBs to help address coverage units on STs. They can all run...let's see if they can play. The coverage units were a mess, but the coaches only just yesterday found out who their regulars are going to be. We'll have a better feel for how those units will work around week 4...hopefully they won't cost a game.

OLB. Until Z comes back, Gary and P. Smith will play a huge number of snaps. When both Smiths and Gary were healthy, that was a nice 1-2-3, but that group is starters and not much else right now. I doubt Rivers or Garvin would scare anyone.

I differ on CB (as CW pointed out yesterday). I feel like there's better talent in that room than the Packers had a year ago, and Barry should be taking advanatage of it. Even a year ago, when King was hurt and one game where Alexander was hurt (remember they BOTH missed the Jax game) they patched it together with shoddy depth (Jackson? Shocking!) on the outside and made it work. Stokes is better than Jackson...at least, a better athlete. Bitch about Yiadom all you want, but there aren't many teams who can say their 6th CB--who they probably won't play on defense hardly at all--was a 10 game starter the previous season. The CB room is better than it was last year.

Dobber, I agree. Much improved CB room over last year.

Yiadom looked awful in pass pro (I think he gave up a completion on almost every target) but unlike Jackson, he's a good tackler. He could be a valuable ST player...especially on coverage units.

First we need to stop the run - Now if Clark stays healthy and Preston plays faster and the rest of the Dline holds their own and stops getting gashed then that is step one. And we are playing a really good running back to start and we all remember Kamara and our bad tackling last year Summers et al. Secondly we need pressure on their QB - any good QB will pick apart any defensive backfield without pressure. Finally we need to tackle and get off the field when we have a chance - and how many times do we not tackle on those short swing passes or quick outs and let other teams not only get easy first downs but convert on 3rd and long. So one can pick any sector as being weak but I just think that our tackling has been weak - especially ILB and defensive backfield.

If nobody wanted him and the Packers signed him what then does this say about the Packer judgment of Love then as well?

We had him in for a try out and kept him. We didn’t draft him on the first day. That is indicative of us seeing something in Benkert but not the same potential. Ultimately, Benkert has been in more camps and practices, had his bone head moments too. I like him as a 3rd, but 30 odd GMs passed on him for their rosters this week. They know more than me.

Benkert was in 2018 draft and the Packers weren't looking for a QB that early on is why we didn't draft him. Who knows if we picked him up now what the thoughts would have been about Love if he would be needed with Benkert having gotten reps with the Packers for those years? He is as good as Love is now is bet why Packers kept him over Love only because Love was a first round pick and of course the embarrassment of demoting him to PS is my thinking. Love will never be a quality starting QB.

Looking mostly beyond this season:

For what it's worth, the analytics point to coverage skills being a better indicator of defensive success than the pass rush; ideally you'd like to have four corners that can cover reasonably well. Right now we have Alexander--followed by King, Sullivan, a pair of unproven rookies, and, uh, Yiadom. King is going to miss time at some point, you can count on it. So it's imperative that Stokes will be ready to step in when called upon. Also assuming King will not be re-signed, look forward to another at least mid-level draft pick being spent here (oh boy).

ILB: Gute said he was looking to upgrade earlier in the draft, but you know how it normally goes here. I wouldn't think Burks and Summers are in the long-term plans, so why not break the taboo and actually spend a legitimate high pick here? Hope springs eternal....

I don't remember the last time we had a #6 CB who could cover anybody. But even by Packer standards, Yiadom appears to be worse than most, and we really don't know what we have in Jean Charles yet, so I'm in total agreement with Gil on this one. He is also right about #2, #3, and #4 having a lot of question marks. And yet the CB group could actually be a position of strength if the top four are healthy and King plays as well as he has at times in the past. It's possible that his poor performance last season was due to playing hurt. We can also hope that Sullivan, who is still very young, improves and that Stokes learns quickly.

It’s corner but if the front 7 bring more pressure it helps the secondary a great deal I think if Slaton and Heflin contribute right away with the Smiths and Gary it could be a dominant front .

you hit on something mac once commented on, we expect the pass rush to pressure the qb and thus dont need to have top cover corners.

I have to think D-line. If Clark goes down you're stuck with a rookie (though he does have promise), and Keke.

My biggest concern with this team is Joe Barry Carroll. If he had coached even a top 15 defense, I might feel better.

but he was cheap and available plus no good coach would want to work with this lack of talent.

imo this will be a god awful d. My gutt says the Bills game is a prelude to what all teams will do based on King' s play last year: pass early, pass often and run later with the lead to keep Rog off the field.
CB is our achiles heel, then ilb.
I think i read somewhere a while back a statement from Gutt, or even Mcarthy, that we expect rodgers to put up more points then our d allows. Dont need great players on d to do that.
I beleive thats true or why wouldnt you bring in experienced corners? ergo they costs money. Rookies dont

Why wouldn't you bring in experienced corners? Because they're not available, at least not if they are any good.

Gute cut Breeland who made like 5 mill. He was better than any CB we have had since but for Alexander. Gute does not strengthen the CB position with a Vet and refuses to add a Vet to the DL. Either move would help both
the DL by covering longer and the pass rush getting home or the Dl collapsing the pocket and the opposing QB being pressured and a hurried throw and less time having to cover by the Secondary. Gute refuses to do either. After AR contract shuffle.....Packers have 10 Mill to work with and Gute has done nothing at either position. Maybe he does later in the year.....Maybe it's prudent to wait a bit and see what position is hurt with injuries to cover with a trade or claim. I don't like starting the year without addressing the spot that kept you from a Super Bowl. That would make sense to me.

#1 CB, #2 deep Safety, #3 DL, #4 OLB until Z is healthy.

Lots of question marks on the OL, and if the Packers can’t protect Rodgers, the season might be over real quick.
