Browns DC Rob Ryan Takes Issue With Bengals Guard

In the wake of the Cincinnati Bengals accusing Cleveland Browns rookie safety T.J. Ward of a cheap-shot, Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is making an accusation of his own.

"If they want to worry about a cheap shot they ought to look at first and 10 on the 35, third quarter, 4:24 left, make sure you get that down and watch their guard Nate Livings," Ryan said on Friday, via Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

"Our kids played great the whole game. They want to (complain) about him (Ward) and he hit a guy (Jordan Shipley) in the face. This kid hits our guy in the back after he got a sack for a forced fumble, (Scott) Fujita, and a blocked field goal over him. Then this kid dives and hits him in the back of the legs. If you want to talk about cheap, talk about this asshole. Excuse me, Nate Livings. To be honest with you, I think we took Cincinnati’s best shot, and we won. That’s the facts."

Thanks to NFL's Game Rewind, I went back and looked at the play Ryan was referring to.

With 4:02 to play in the 3rd quarter, the Bengals had a 1st-and-10 at the Browns' 35-yard line. After the snap, Carson Palmer took a deep drop as the Bengals were setting up for a screen to Cedric Benson, who couldn't fight through linebacker Matt Roth to get in position to catch the pass.

Fujita was Livings' responsibility. The linebacker, recognizing that he had an open shot at Palmer, used an inside move on Livings, who dove at Fujita, cutting down at the right thigh, avoiding Fujita's knee and ankle. No flag was thrown on the play, as it appeared as though Livings' helmet was ahead of Fujita when he contacted him.

Livings was jawing at Fujita after blocking him on the previous play, so it's clear that there is some bad blood between the two Ohio-based AFC North teams. Should make for an interesting re-match on December 19 at Paul Brown Stadium.
