Chargers Agree to Terms With 1st Round RB Ryan Mathews

ESPN's Bill Williamson and John Clayton report that the San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with first-round running back Ryan Mathews on a five-year deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 6-0, 218-pound Mathews ran for 3,280 yards and a school-record 39 touchdowns during 31-game career at Fresno State. Mathews was limited by injuries his first two seasons, but started 11-of-12 games as a junior, running for 1,808 yards and 19 touchdowns, earning first-team All-WAC conference and second-team All-American honors.

Mathews has the size to run between the tackles, and is adept at breaking tackles. Once Mathews hits the open field, his sub-4.4 speed allows him to run away from defenders.

San Diego dealt several picks to the Miami Dolphins in order to trade up the 12th spot in the 2010 NFL Draft to select Mathews. With LaDanian Tomlinson moving on this off-season, Mathews is expected to get the bulk of the team’s carries, with Darren Sproles reprising his role as the third-down back.
