Fifth-year tight end Marcedes Lewis has emerged as the star of the first week of Jacksonville Jaguars training camp, Tania Garguli of the Florida Times-Union reports.
"The most dominant player on our football team in the first week has been Marcedes Lewis," Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said. "He's been absolutely sensational — blocking, catching, leading, sending the right message with his actions along with the things he's saying and standing up for, so really proud of the start of the year he's had."
The former first-round pick out of UCLA has caught 123 passes for 1,524 yards and 7 touchdowns during his career, with most of his production coming in the last three seasons, during which Lewis has started 47 games.
After setting a career-high with 41 receptions in 2008, Lewis' catch total slipped to 32, due in large part to Lewis' most of the final two games of the season. Lewis did have a career-best 518 yards receiving, using his speed to catch 11 passes of 20+ yards, tied for fifth-most in the NFL last season.
"I slimmed down a little bit; I feel better," Lewis said. "[And,] really trying to focus on each play in its entirety, and if a play doesn't go my way, moving on to the next one.
"I'm excited about this year. I've taken leaps and bounds from where I was last year."
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Lewis (could have a breakout season if the Jaguars take advantage of his size (6-6, 275) and basketball background in the red zone.
