Jets LB David Harris Wants a New Contract, Too
By admin
A week before the New York Jets begin their "Organized Team Activity" sessions, a theme is emerging, as Manish Mehta of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that yet another Jets player would like a contract extension.
This time, it's inside linebacker David Harris.
"Hopefully, I will," Harris said of getting a new contract before the 2010 season begins. "But my job as an athlete and football player is to go out there and play ball. My agent will handle the rest. We all know what kind of situation we’re in with the possible lockout and the CBA. So hopefully, it will get done.
"But that’s the pickle we’re in right now."
A second-round pick (47th overall) out of Michigan by the Jets in 2007, Harris led the Jets with 126 tackles in 2010, and finished third on the team with 5.5 quarterback sacks. Harris added a pair of interceptions and forced fumbles during the regular season, and led the Jets in tackles (25) and quarterback sacks (2) during the 2009 playoffs.
Though not selected to the Pro Bowl, Harris did earn second-team All-Pro honors in 2009, three votes behind Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, and 39 votes behind San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis, who was part of the same 2007 draft class as Harris, and who signed a five-year, $50 million dollar contract extension last week.
"I’m going in the last year of my contract," Harris said. "I’m still under contract for one more year. If I go out and do my job and stay healthy, hopefully everything works out."
And if he puts up another season like 2009, things should work out nicely for Harris.
