Jets Owner Says Gap Between Jets, Revis Is "Insurmountable"

During an appearance on The Michael Kay Show on 1050 ESPN in New York, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said there's an "insurmountable" gap between the team and All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis.

"We've been working on this with Revis for about six months. After last Friday's meeting with Mike (Tannenbaum), where Mike met with Darrelle's agents, and virtually nothing had changed. Nothing had changed over the last six months," Johnson said. "We have a fundamental disagreement over total compensation and that has not changed at all, so that led me to the statement I made yesterday."

Johnson proceeded to tell Kay that he'd be willing to meet with Revis, circumventing Tannenbaum and Revis' agents, and also offered to meet face-to-face with Revis' agents, but was rebuffed. After speaking with Revis' agents, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that no offer to meet with the owner was made, nor would be rebuffed.

"I will meet with Mr. Johnson anywhere," Neil Schwartz told Florio. "It will be an honor and a privilege to meet with him"

Kay then asks Johnson that if head coach Rex Ryan considers Revis to be the best player at that position, why wouldn't the Jets pay him at the same level as Nnamdi Asomugha.

"I have to go by what we feel, and we feel that, 'Yes, he's a good player,' " Johnson said. "But until we come up with an agreement on what the compensation should be, it's not going to work. That's just what you have to do when you're running any business, whether it's a football team, or a radio station, or anything. You have to make decisions that make sense from a business standpoint, from a team-building concept, and from a fan concept.

"I think we have to look at a lot of different ingredients when we’re putting this team together, not just Darrelle."

When asked if he thought the gap was insurmountable, Johnson said "At this gap, I would say it's insurmountable. That's why I issued the comment that I don't think he'll be here.

"Well, I feel that he will not be on the New York Jets team this year. Based on what I know, today, to this very moment. Now, that could change, and I hope it does change. And if he reported to camp, we would all welcome him, as the coach said, with open arms."

This story is showing no signs of slowing down, as Tannenbaum appeared on 1050 ESPN tonight and admitted that he and Ryan have discussed trading Revis.

"We've discussed that and we don't have any interest in trading the player," Tannenbaum said.
