Jonathan Crompton Looking to Absorb Chargers Offense

When San Diego Chargers fifth-round quarterback Jonathan Crompton reports to his first NFL training camp on Saturday, he'll do so knowing exactly where he stands on the team's depth chart, and what's expected of him this summer.

"Obviously, Philip (Rivers) is the guy, and (Billy Volek) is an 11-year vet, so he knows what he's doing," Crompton told the Asheville Citizen-Times. "I'm going to compete every day, but right now my main goal now is to just come in, learn and soak in the system."

In his senior season at the University of Tennessee, the 6-3, 222-pound Crompton completed 58% of his passes for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns. Given his size, production in college football's top conference, and shaky injury, Crompton was inexplicably left off the invite list for the 2010 Scouting Combine.

Crompton performed well during pre-draft workouts, and Chargers general manager A.J. Smith used the team's compensatory pick in the fifth round (168th overall) on Crompton, providing head coach Norv Turner with a quarterback to develop after trading Charlie Whitehurst to the Seattle Seahawks.

As long as Rivers is around, Crompton can only move up one spot on the depth chart. But if Smith can eventually flip this late fifth-round pick for a second- or third-round pick in 2012 or 2013, he'll be considered a successful pick.

Crompton signed a four-year, $1.94 million dollar contract on June 2, which included a $150,936 signing bonus.
