Lions G Rob Sims Hopes to Earn Extension

According to Tom Kowalski of MLive.com, the Detroit Lions and newly acquired guard Rob Sims have yet to begin talks on a long-term contract extension, but Sims is hopeful one isn't far off.

"Right now, we're not talking about anything," Sims said, via Kowalski. "Hopefully, I can prove to him that I deserve one. I would like to be here long term. I hope this isn't just one year and out. But I've got to earn that. I've got to come in here and show them that I belong and show them I can be here for a long time."

If Sims does not receive a contract extension this off-season, which seems unlikely considering the Lions have invested a mid-round pick in this year's draft in him, he'll play the 2010 season under the one-year, $1.176 million dollar restricted free agent tender he signed last week.

The Lions traded a fifth-round pick (133rd overall) to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire Sims, a 2006 fourth-round pick (128th overall) out of Ohio State. Sims (6-3, 312) started 34 of his 45 games with the Seahawks, including 14 in 2009 after missing most of the 2008 season with a torn pectoral muscle.
