Packers HC Mike McCarthy Updates Injury Situation

Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett will have season-ending wrist surgery, head coach Mike McCarthy announced during his Monday afternoon press conference.

The 29-year old Barnett was injured during the first half of Sunday's 28-26 win over the Detroit Lions, but a cast was placed on his wrist, which allowed him to continue. Barnett totaled 10 tackles in the game.

Surgery was recommended, but Barnett sought a second opinion that might allow him to continue playing this season.

A first-round pick (23rd overall) out of the Oregon State in 2003, Barnett has started all 107 games he's played in the NFL, totaling 787 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and 9 interceptions. A torn ACL cost Barnett the final seven games during the 2008 season.

In other Packers-related injury news, quarterback Aaron Rodgers (concussion) is expected to miss some practice time this week, but his status for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins is unknown. Tight Jermichael Finley will undergo surgery on his knee, but McCarthy does not expect it to be of the season-ending variety.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that Finley is expected to miss about three weeks.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Clay Matthews has a strained hamstring and defensive end Ryan Pickett has a sprained ankle, but their statuses won't be known until later this week. Safety and key special teams contributor Derrick Martin will miss several weeks with a knee sprain.

Linebacker Brandon Chillar will test his shoulder this week, as well.
