Seahawks Release WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh

The Seattle Seahawks have officially released wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports.

Houshmandzadeh signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Seahawks in 2009. In his one season with the Seahawks, Houshmandzadeh caught 79 passes for 911 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Houshmandzadeh did not appear to be a fit in Seattle's new offense, and at his age (turns 33 later this month), he was not envisioned as being a part of the team's future. Since the Seahawks' current decision-makers have nothing invested in him, they've opted to release him, despite his $7 million guaranteed base salary for 2010.

Once another team signs Houshmandzadeh, which will happen at some point next week, the Seahawks would be required to pay the balance of the $7 million owed to him for this season.
