Seahawks to Trade or Release WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh

The Seattle Seahawks will trade or release wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Reports on Thursday were that the Seahawks were attempting to trade Houshmandzadeh, but his fully guaranteed $7 million base salary appear to make that an impossibility at this point in time. As Schefter notes, few teams will trade for Houshmandzadeh knowing that they could sign him to a veteran minimum deal, with the Seahawks picking up the remainder of the $7 million.

In his one season with the Seahawks, Houshmandzadeh caught 79 passes for 911 yards and 3 touchdowns, but was noticeably slower, struggling to gain separation against the most pedestrian of cornerbacks. Houshmandzadeh was frequently seen pouting on the sideines, showing up quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, and late in the season, engaged in an on-air dispute with Seattle radio analyst and former NFL quarterback Hugh Millen.

This off-season, Houshmanzadeh underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia, missing most of the team's "Organized Team Activity" sessions and mini-camps.

In three pre-season games, Houshmandzadeh has caught 8 passes for 95 yards, but the performances this summer by Mike Williams, who will start for the Seahawks, and Deon Butler and Deion Branch, as well as the arrival of Golden Tate, made Houshmandzadeh expendable.
