Sparano Last Month on WRs like Brandon Marshall
By admin
Here's what Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said about acquiring a wide receiver like Brandon Marshall or Terrell Owens three weeks ago during the league meetings in Orlando.
"I don’t know if either of them make sense for our ballclub, one way or the other," Sparano said. "Both are great players in their own ways, different from each other. Obviously I’ve had Terrell before and know his strengths. Brandon I’ve played against before, know his strengths.
"I’m happy with group of players we have right now...been very productive over the last couple of years and are continuing to get better."
Perhaps leaving the door open, Sparano had this to say about "diva" receivers.
"I’ve been in situations where you’re with players who want the football and are calling for the ball. I think to me from the receivers standpoint, it’s a little bit more the nature of the position because they get fewer at bats during the course of ballgames, you can take that player away easier than you can take a running back away. Their natural reaction to want the ball is not a bad thing, it’s a good thing. I’d rather have a receiver who wants the ball than one that’s trying to hide and get the helluva out of the way. From that end, I don’t have that problem.
"Now there’s a line you can cross when you’re involved in that kind of situation and it becomes confrontational with the quarterback or the coach or any of those situations. That’s where it becomes disruptive a little bit. But from my end, those guys just want the football. I’d rather that want the ball and are hungry and have a passion for the ball."
Between the Dolphins' off-field issues this off-season, including multiple arrests, and the organization's previous disinterest in players like Marshall, it's surprising that the Dolphins made this trade. Clearly, the New York Jets' bold off-season moves prompted the Dolphins to keep up with the Joneses.
