Aaron Jones' suspension puts slight cog in Packers' "committee" plans

-- The Green Bay Packers will be without their second-leading rusher from 2017 for the first two games to open the regular season.

The NFL docked Aaron Jones, one of the team's fifth-round draft picks last year, with a two-game suspension in a flurry of pre-Independence Day disciplinary measures taken by the league.

Jones' suspension stems from a citation issued to him at a traffic stop in October of last year.

According to reports, Jones was operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in his system, operating said vehicle without a license and speeding. The two latter charges were dropped, however, Jones entered a no-contest plea for the first charge which led to his current suspension.

While Jones will miss the Packers' season opener against the Chicago Bears and the following game against the Minnesota Vikings, he can be activated to the roster on September 17, a day following the meeting with the Vikings.

Jones can also participate in training camp practices throughout the summer as well as all four preseason games. This does, for the most part, put a cog in the Packers' plans at running back for the first pair of games.

"I accept it, take responsibility for it, and regret the mistake that I made during the 2017 season which led to the punishment," Jones said in a post on Twitter. "I've let down my family, teammates, coaches, the Packers' front offices, Packers' fans, UTEP, UTEP fans, and the communities of El Paso and Green Bay."

With so much talent in the backfield that can easily be rotated between Jones, 2017 fourth-round pick Jamaal Williams and receiver-turned-running back Ty Montgomery, the Packers have expressed fascination in operating in a "running back by committee" system.

Rather than the best player winning the starting job, the offense rides the hot hand. Whether that's Williams or Montgomery entering week one will all be told through the stages of August.

Williams was the Packers' leading rusher last season, finishing with 108 more yards than Jones -- but with 72 more carries as well. His success came more in increments whereas Jones portrayed explosiveness and savvy treats -- as a rookie -- each time he touched the ball.

That lead duo is what makes the Packers' backfield so promising, with the exception of Montgomery, who will likely be rotated out to his former receiver position for schematic purposes.

It's also worth noting that Montgomery's success against the Bears in recent memory is something that may draw attention when it comes to who gets the majority of the reps in week one.

In four games against the Bears since 2016, Montgomery has totaled 50 touches (36 carries), 385 total yards (304 rushing, 8.44 yards per carry) and three touchdowns.

Outside of Williams and Montgomery, 2017 seventh-round pick Devante Mays and Joel Bouagnon are the other running backs on the Packers' roster.

Its too bad this happened because of the two games against division rivals, but it is what it is. Teams are continuously forced to deal with the unavailability of key players. It also may be inter-related with the Cobb ankle situation as Montgomery is a key backup at both positions.

Bottom line, its time for Williams, Montgomery and Mays to step up and show what they can do.

How about taking responsibility for the ' choice ' you made since claiming ignorance would be even more sour than the original sour.

Perhaps the NFL should take some responsibility, and exercise some common sense, by ending suspensions for marijuana related issues. What is possibly accomplished by such suspensions?

A move into 2018 by joining half of the states would be refreshing.

As like with immigration, fix the law....stop making excuses for those who break it...change it...until then...it's the law and or rule.
The only way to change a bad law/rule is to enforce it vigorously.

It is an ancillary subject of greater importance to the entire NFL, not an excuse. The league is depriving fans from seeing a better product over something that should not be illegal anywhere, and soon will be legal nationwide. Again, what does the NFL gain from these suspensions?

WKU - pot, like alcohol may become legal everywhere but the issue here, I think, is DUI. That is not legal, whether alcohol or marijuana is the substance. Drink or smoke is fine, but don't drive a car afterwards and risk yourself and others. Thanks, Since '61

'61 - Appreciate the reply. My point was to the NFL's policy in general regarding marijuana, not any associated activities. It is my understanding that many players have been suspended for use only.

I'm not going to argue the issue of legalization, but players know they're going to get tested. If they use in a timeframe around which they might get tested, they run the risk of getting caught and then they're at the mercy of the league (which has none).

If it's in the CBA, it's in the CBA. Player representation negotiated it and players ratified it. I expect we'll see the players side pushing for very different verbiage on this in the next CBA regardless of the legal status of recreational pot use.

"I expect we'll see the players side pushing for very different verbiage on this in the next CBA regardless of the legal status of recreational pot use."

I'd be surprised. Most of the Players involved in the negotiations are just not the smoker type. They are not going to want to give up and serious leverage on safety and money for pot smoking.

It's also not in the best interest of the NFL to allow it either. While it's possibly better than opiates for pain, smoking too much also is highly demotivating. Do owners want their 177.2 million investment in players salaries to go "Up In Smoke"? Probably not.

It sounds like Wisconsin has strict liability for any detectable amount of a restricted substance in one's system. (Some defenses exist if one has a prescription for certain substances.) Other states that have legalized weed have apparently developed concentration thresholds that have to be exceeded for impairment to be charged. Not so in Wisconsin, where Jones was initially arrested for traveling 79 M.P.H in a 55 zone on highway 172.

So Jones was charged with and pled guilty to an impairment charge rather than possession. In fact, no marijuana or paraphernalia was found in his car. That is probably the reason for the suspension being 2 games rather than 1 game. Sounds like he didn't do badly on his field sobriety test, but did admit to having smoked weed some three hours earlier.

[Based on 5 minutes of research.]

I agree that it is a CBA issue. However, the league could choose not to enforce the policy without any ramifications to other CBA provisions.

I honestly do not think that the NFL cares about the status of legalization on a state or federal level. The league apparently believes that such suspensions play well with a segment of the fan base. However, the league knows that is a small segment because these suspensions are often announced at times (late afternoon prior to a holiday, late Friday afternoon) in the hope that the larger fan base will ignore them. When that larger fan base begins to voice their opposition, the policy will change regardless of the legal status.

I think you're pretty much right, but the league clearly sees this as an image thing. They don't want to be seen as an entity with problems of 'abuse', and they don't want to be seen as soft on those problems, either.

No it doesn't. The coaching staff and management knew this was coming way back in October of last year. I was hoping they'd reduce it on appeal to 1 game, but apparently not. At any rate, they don't need Jones to beat the Bears. The Vikings will hurt, but this team will go as ARod and the defense goes. Monty out there getting a bunch of touches for an early division lead isn't the worst thing in the world.

This could open up the doghouse door for Davante Mays. Or, the team could just go with Williams and Montgomery could just be the plan. But at the least, this should give Mays a spot on the roster for at least two games. If he proved worthy, it would be a nice problem for the Packers.

Well, I'm guessing we have all made a few mistakes in our life. And I'm sure some of them happened when we were 23 years old like Jones is.

You have to give him credit for standing up, admitting his mistake and taking his punishment. He'll lose two game checks (around $600,000) as a result of the suspension, and hopefully this will be a lesson to some of the youth out there that admire him as a Packer.

'To dock' means to deduct or take away. So the NFL did not "dock Aaron Jones with a suspension." They did the exact opposite of that. A 'cog' is literally the tooth of a gear, and figuratively it means 'an important or integral part.' So the suspension of Jones does not "put a cog in the Packers' plans." It does the exact opposite of that. Writing well is easier if we know the meaning of words.

Disagree. MN has a fine run defense, and Jones is the RB best able to make something out of nothing. It is possible that one of Williams or Montgomery might get nicked up as well.

That is a nice segue into Davante Mays. I like him too. Nimble feet with good size and enough speed. Good late round flyer. He has a lot of competition from guys who play other positions to earn the roster spot opened up by the suspension of Jones, but we'd be pretty thin with just Monty, Williams and an FB available for the first two games, so there is a good chance we'd keep 3 RBs and a fullback.

Don't forget about Devante Mays. He was lost in the shuffle last year but he could get some more work in TC and be active the first 2 weeks. I thought he looked the best of the 3 rookies last summer and I really think he could become a nice player. 2 fumbles doomed his year but I don't put too much into the rookie year. He will correct this. The competition will force him to play with a sense of urgency. Not too many 230 lb. backs that can run a 4.4.

Devante Mays - another great example of MM's sh*tty coaching style. Low round draft picks or FAs who make a mistake or two, get put into the doghouse i.e., psychologically tortured rather than realize that rookie mistakes are usually from just trying too hard. He did the same thing to Trevor Davis in his rooking year. Give young guys a chance to redeem themselves. God knows MM has been given endless chances to redeem his many mistakes. The guy's a real turd.

Don't get me wrong, I think Mays has some skills and perhaps could be good. Perhaps an offseason will be the best thing for him. But from everything I saw Jones was the best of the 3, with Williams behind but not far behind, and Mays honestly should have been on the PS all year.

Maybe Mays can put his fumbling issue behind him and for his sake he better do it. I don't want to write him off yet, and will give him this preseason, but he better show up or he may not be on the 53 when the season starts.

Who's Aaron Jones' lawayer? Couldn't he get a plea deal to drop the most serious charge and cop to the other two. Can't say I respect the Green Bay cops on this one. They could have let him go and gave him a warning, issued him a speeding ticket and sent him on his way. He didn't have anything on him, nor was he swerving or had gotten into an accident. It was a big fat nothing. His only crime is that he told the cops the truth and said he smoked. Where's the mercy? What does this teach people? Don't make it easy for them. Admit nothing and keep your mouth shut when dealing with the Man. Hope there is an appeal mechanism to address this. It's just flat out unfair. Letroy Guion got a 4 game suspension for getting caught with a half pound and a shot gun. We should all write to the commissioner in Aaron's defense. This might cost us a game. He's a potent weapon and we need him. AJ shouldn't say he's sorry, he should call bullshit on this and fight it tooth and nail. Times have changed and the NFL needs to change with the times. This is definitely an issue the union should address at the next bargaining agreement. Rant over post complete, thanks.

'61, your the voice of reason but I must disagree in this respect, he was honest and told the police. They usually honor that because cops get lied to all the time and should have let him go especially if he had passed an on the spot sobriety test. I don't know if they did and if not they should have because I'm sure he would have passed, marijuana doesn't get you looped like alcohol does. I don't know how they proved he was high other than him saying so. Plus, I don't think they caught him with anything. A good New York lawyer would have had the charges reduced or thrown out of court. And on a larger level weed isn't booze its not even close that's why I hope the NFL changes it's policy on the matter and realize the plant is a medicine and not a menace to society.

I read an article on zerohedge the other day stating that after Nevada legalized it, one year later death by car accident went down 10 percent it should have gone up by 10 percent if using it is so bad. Also, the congress just legalized hemp nationwide, the male plant that doesn't get you high, the plant our founding fathers grew as a textile product in the making of sails, rope and clothes. So I think where heading in the right direction and the NFL will acquiesce at some point. As you may have deduced I'm a member of the hippie subculture, the neighborhood taught me to a renegade and if it wasn't for that plant I would have become a junkie, in jail or wiseguy. Momma's firm hand also prevented all that. But I know we can agree on one thing my friend, Go Pack go. Take care, ciao.

Agreed. I've suggested that unless they are year-long ones, suspensions should begin week 2.

Jones seems like a decent guy...but so naive....the cops must have had to add another note pad to scribble all the confessions this guy gave.....

I honestly thought it hilarious, Jones had no marijauna or paraphanalia in the car but he starts confessing to something they had no evidence of til he opened his mouth and confessed, lol. Good football player not the brightest guy though.

I'm more concerned about injuries during these suspensions. The player comes back and pushes himself to get his position back, pulls something and is then out for another month. That is what I get concerned about. Jones missing a few games can certainly be covered by the committee.

Good grief, a man tells the truth and posters here slam him. No wonder our morals are in the tank.

Right. Completely agree. And if he had lied and gotten in bigger trouble those same posters would be in the forum saying..."why wasn't he smart enough to just comply with the cops request and tell the truth?"

Legalize pot already, no more bad car crashes because no one drives over 10 MPH. Less tax dollars to spend locking up thousands of people and no more sports suspensions. When players get suspended it should come off of the cap.

Pot is Big Business. Since Colorado legalized pot: DUI's increased. 12 to 17 yrs. increased usage! ( higher than the national avg. ) Drug suspensions from schools increased. Adult arrestees increased. Hospitalization and Emergency room visits increased. The result of the studies is, it's a terrible Public Policy. Not to mention short term memory loss. anxiety, psychosis, reaction Times, etc. The main problem is the range of psychological and physical effects. So as much as I don't like kids getting busted. I would have to vote NO in my state.

I live in Colorado, and although I support legalization as a liberty voter, all of Stockholder's points are accurate.

I have a friend who is sheriff for a large county, and he shares a very sobering angle on all the supposed "tax revenue boom" we were expecting from legalizing pot. He says we've received far less than projected because growers are simply selling illegally, taking advantage of a market where buyers have nothing to fear from carrying weed. But most importantly, we burn through every dime received in taxes and more in the increased policing needed to deal with so many more people smoking weed--vagrancy alone has skyrocketed.

By the way, this guy wasn't an opponent of legalization. He never took any stand on it at all. He's just being honest about the results, which have been, fiscally speaking, terrible.

We had a guy here not too long ago (the starship captain) who claimed to know a lot of individuals and spun lots of fairy tales based on those fictitious relationships. Nice to see Peth picking up that mantle.

Liberty voter? How about supporting liberty for those children in cages.

Yes, I know the sheriff, and helped with his campaign. I have never made a claim here that wasn't true.

Also, I need you to give me a dollar figure. Seriously, how much would it cost to get you to stop inserting off-topic political attacks? Just name your price, and I'll consider it. Your non-stop political activism gets really tiring, WKU, as all this "Occupy-Resist" rage is just silly on a sports blog.

Also Peth, let's hypothetically assume that you know a sheriff. No doubt that legalization has been fiscally terrible for him.

The "War On Drugs" is a multi-billion dollar business. Individual law enforcement agencies across the country have received millions to counter the dreaded imminent threat of people enjoying marijuana. That's how those agencies purchased all of those cool toys and, in the process, morphed into paramilitary units. And, of course, your municipalities get to collect all of those fines, court costs, etc.

Then there is the multi-billion dollar business of private prisons. When those non-violent offenders are no longer available because of legalization, profits plummet. When profits plummet, the kickbacks to your sheriff buddy decrease.

So your sheriff buddy has plenty of reasons to increase vagrancy arrests. Got to find a way to keep those dollar coffers stuffed.

Alcohol causes a lot more harm than pot. A drug is a drug and it's still up to the individual not to drive impaired. Pot can be grown anywhere easily, not like making moonshine. Hell 50 years ago my friends were growing pot.

No offense, 4thand1, but I think I'll take a major sheriff's opinion over yours, as he actually has to police the results.

You sound more like an activist. He's a realist.

Actually I've been sober for 23+ years, I just don't like my tax dollars being spent on prisons and people to guard them. In my state it costs over 28k @year with over 45k inmates. We're number 23 on the list, NY is number 1, over 60k @year per inmate. Our tax dollars at work. I have friends who are prison guards and believe me we need prisons from some of the things they've told me.

We do incarcerate too many for the wrong reasons. I would suggest that we do not incarcerate certain classes of offenders as often or for as long as we should. As you note from speaking with prison guards, we do need prisons. The cost to incarcerate is high, but so is the damage the offenders do.

Stockholders "points" sound like they are lifted straight from Reefer Madness. Anxiety? In reality, many varieties of marijuana are used to treat anxiety. Psychosis? Please. Pure drivel.

Stop getting your information from Jeff Sessions (hopefully the United Methodists strike a blow for mainstream religion by following through on excommunicating Sessions). Get into the modern age of scientific knowledge.

I got my info from the internet. The United States of America is not Woodstock, Roach clips, Lids, or Rose colored glasses. You should live in San Francisco. Your points are straight out of the hippie movement. If people are prescribed it, thats one thing. If they are not in control, it's WRONG. I don't need weed to feel good, or make my day. Quoting the modern age is BS. Society is breaking down. Drugs are for SICK people!

My next favorite running back on this team after Jones is probably Devante Mays. I feel confident his fumbling ways are behind him, and he just has more ability than Montgomery and Williams.

Hopefully, Mays lights up camp and takes the top job.

Zach Jacobsen:
"Aaron Jones' suspension puts slight cog in Packers' "committee" plans"
Umm NO it doesn't..... it might put a CLOG in their RB plans but not a COG
A COG is a tooth of a gear or cogwheel or the gear itself. A COG is an important part of the machine..... now if you throw a wrench into the COG you can stop the machine.

My point is, if you're going to write,.... know how to use the words you're using and what they mean.

I gather Aaron Jones had a 2016 DUI. Any misconduct within 2 years of a player's combine constitutes prior misconduct and a ticket straight into stage one of the NFL's intervention program (do not pass Go; do not collect $200). He should have been discharged after 90 days unless things went wrong while he was in stage one.

While Jones could have received 4 games under the general policy, if there are aggravating circumstances, like a DUI conviction within 2 years of the player's combine, the suspension could have exceeded 4 games. [I am paraphrasing the NFL's 2016 Policy, section 2.3 - page 20]

Maybe two ain't so bad.

Poor judgement on Jones part. Come on man. You know the rules. Learn from it and move on. You have a lot to offer to the Packers, and yourself, with the skills you possess.
