Abraham Lucas NFL Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report

NFL Prospect Profile: Abraham Lucas, OT, Washington St.

Name: Abraham Lucas

School: Washington State

Year: rSr

Position: Offensive Tackle

Measurables: 6’6 3/8th 315

General Info:

Abraham attended Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, Washington. He is one of seven children, being the second oldest. He played both ways in high school, collecting 31 tackles and 15 sacks his senior year. He was a consensus three-star prospect. Lucas also played basketball all four years of high school averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds a game. The former Cougar redshirted his first season at WSU due to him being about 260 coming out of high school. As a redshirt freshman, he started all 13 games at right tackle and was named 2nd team all-conference, and allowed 19 pressures. In 2019 he again started every game at right tackle and again was 2nd team All-Conference. This time he allowed 17 pressures and three sacks. For the shortened 2020 season he started every game at right tackle again and allowed four pressures and one sack in four games. For his final season in 2021, he had his best season overall. He started every game again, only allowed nine pressures and 0 sacks. For his career, he had 11 penalties. Lucas also went to the 2022 Senior Bowl and the 2022 NFL Combine.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Abraham has great size and good length at 6’6 315 and with 33 7/8th inch arms. He uses his length well. He could conceivably learn how to play guard. Lucas knows how to use his hands independently. Lucas also shows quick and smooth feet in his kick slide. He is so smooth in his pass sets that it is almost boring to watch. He slides and mirrors effortlessly. Something rare that you will see is Washington State will pull him across the line to lead block for a back or receiver. Lucas knows how to position himself between the defender and whoever has the ball. He can get to the second level with ease. The redshirt senior does a good job of keeping his head on a swivel and ID’ing defenders and which to block. When a pass rusher wants to take the edge he lets them have it and just lets their momentum take them past the pocket. Held his own against Kayvon Thibodeaux in 2021.

Weaknesses

He does struggle with his anchor at times, allowing defenders to push him back in the pocket. He only has experience at right tackle. He does hunch over a little in his stance. His butt can get a high in his stance as well. His length is not ideal at just under 34”. He tends to be more of a positional blocker in the run game, than a bury you in the dirt type of blocker. The former Washington State Cougar drops his hands off the snap in pass pro. He will over-set sometimes when trying to protect against fast edge rushers which will leave open the chance for them to counter to the inside.

Fit with the Packers:

With a big hole at right tackle, Abraham Lucas would be an almost perfect fit for the Packers due to his high-level athleticism, experience, and play style. He would fit well with Green Bay’s outside zone-blocking scheme. You would like to see him with a straighter back when he is in his stance and improve his anchor as well since NFL teams and pass rushers will try to use that against him. Lucas also needs to bring his hands up a few inches off the snap when in pass pro, that will allow him to strike quickly and with more explosion/power. With his athleticism, he could probably even play some left tackle in a pinch. If they didn’t feel comfortable starting him as a rookie, he could be a swing tackle with some practice while he spent his rookie year improving his anchor.

Feet, slide, mirror effortlessly with quick sets is huge, along with the power - stuff you can’t teach easily. Most all rookie OTs require weight, strength, technique work - all possible with Packers OL coaching. Seems good value.

Well, I mean, value is relative to where he is picked, right?

Hey Mark… I’m making assumptions. Anything past R2 is extreme value IMO, and I think he’s slotting somewhere ~ R3-4. That’s how loaded this OT class is. I seriously like guys going back into Top 200 or later at OT.

That’s kind of what has driven me to just hit top receiving talents early. Thinking Yosh is definitely back, Bakhtiari should be ready to go… and we’ve got other players who have been developing with OT experience if forced into an early shuffle there.

Same with EDGE. We’ve got starters.

Assuming we re-sign Lazard, that leaves two spots wide open at WR starting positions, with no SPEED anywhere there that is known. I find TE a little less unsettling.

Maybe they steal Lucas away at 92.

btw, I’m also considering one or two of our 22-59 picks could be spent at OT or Edge, LB, DT, etc. if a talent too good to pass up drops to us. WR from what I’ve seen looks like the #3 deepest position group next to EDGE & OT.

We’ll see, and I’m very confident we walk away from this draft a much better Packers team.

His description sounds kind of like Bakhtiari's when he came out.

EXACTLY. Same with ASU’s Kellen Diesch. Both Abraham Lucas and Diesch are similar in that they’re huge, have natural gifts in movement specific to OT, and they’re both badasses. TOUGH. MEAN.

Bak’s description containing the words “thin arms…” David started Game 1 as a rookie at LT and never looked back.

That is exactly what I was thinking. His intelligence is also rated off the charts and is a great leader...also David-like.

But I've already made up my mind. Get as many WRs as we can.

11 WRs would require a auditorium for the WR room. Should be able to find a starter or two from the audience, however.

This guy fits the #59. I would go WR with both one picks if the board falls that way. Wyatt and Davis will be gone rd one. Three wides and an OT with the first four, then make deals with the rest to secure an Edge guy and LBs. This needs to be a Wolf Draft. The free agents should be an Edge like Ingram and a CB to compete for the dime spot.

Agree on Lucas. He is the one constant in every sim I've done. He's valued right at #59 every time. I highly, highly doubt the Packers will steal him at #92.

This is the OT I hope the Packers draft. My belief is that he could be the RT for a decade barring injury. Probably 2nd round.

Always enjoy the CHTV prospect evaluations. Often go to other draft sites. Some are rating Lucas with even longer arms, huge hands, and inch taller at 6"7" and over 330 lbs. Also runs a 4.92.

Regardless, if you were drawing up a blueprint for a prototypical NFL tackle, Lucas would be that prototype. What I also look at intently is lots of productive snaps. Lucas is rated at one of, if not the top Ts in pass pro.

And, given the draft depth, many rate him a 3rd rounder. I would not mind Gutey drafting him late 2nd. But 3rd would be a steal aka David Bakhtiari falling to the 4th.
