Around the NFC North: 2023 Week 10

What's happening this week and next with the teams in the NFC North.

Most of the teams in the NFC North won this week. One of them gave up 200 rush yards to a team with six wins and a negative 30-point differential. Let's get into the carnage.

Chicago Bears

The Bears beat the Panthers 16-13 in what was probably their most important game of the season.

Game Notes

  • The Bears own the Panthers' first-round pick next season so this was a rare game that Bears needed to win. For most of the last decade, the Bears have been better off trying to lose each game for draft picks that they would inevitably waste.
  • Tyson Bagent looked like a UDFA rookie and D'Onta Foreman led the team in rushing with 3.8 yards per carry. This was a classic "we're playing the Panthers and they're the only team worse than us" kind of win.
  • The defense continues to look not quite bad enough to induce vomiting. TJ Edwards had a ton of tackles again, Jaquan Brisker played well, and slot corner Kyler Gordon got in on the fun with two TFLs and a pass defensed. The Bears' even had three sacks in the game.
  • The Bears could possibly own two of the first three picks in the draft. Don't be surprised to see players go back to school for another season en masse.

Former Packers

  • The pair of former Badgers linebackers combined for 19 tackles.

  • EQ St. Brown had a catch for 4 yards.

Next Week

The Bears play the Lions.

Lions

The Lions beat the Chargers 41-38.

Game Notes

  • The Lions offense has become dominant. Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was hired for his defensive prowess and the team has several all-pros on the defense. Sure they aren't quite as good as you'd think, but you wouldn't expect a team to dog walk them to 41 points like the Lions did.
  • It all starts with the run game and the Lions are the best in the league at running the ball, according to EPA per play. Sort of ironic that they dominated the team with the most analytics forward head coach by running the ball. Montgomery and Gibbs each had over 100 total yards on the day (35 of Gibbs came in the pass game) and they opened up the field enough for Goff to throw for 10 YPA on a smooth 23-33 for 333 and 2 TDs day.
  • The defense didn't play as well. Aaron Glenn had this defense semi-turned around prior to this week. The Chargers moved the ball all day despite only having one legit veteran target - Keenan Allen. Allen had 11 catches for 175 yards and two TDs.
  • The Lions D at least shut down the run, holding Austin Ekeler to 67 yards on 19 carries but the poor pass defense is problematic. Imagine them facing the Vikings with three pro-bowl level targets in the playoffs.

Vikings

The Vikings took out the Saints 27 to 19.

Game Notes

  • Well, the Vikings have turned it around. Their offensive structure and playcalling is good enough that they can bring in a journeyman QB from the Cardinals of all teams and have a plus offensive performance two weeks in a row. The Vikings and Lions are both really good. That is enough to make you vomit.

  • Josh Dobbs was 23/34 for 268 yards and a TD. The Vikings have spread the ball around since losing Justin Jefferson. This week TJ Hockenson got the call. The former bust at tight end had 11 catches for 134 yards and a TD. Basically half of Dobbs' production. The Athletic NFL podcast talked a lot about how many tight ends break out right when their second contract starts because it just takes that long to learn the position. Somehow the North has two tight ends in that spot right now and a third having one of the best rookie tight end seasons ever. Great.

  • The defense played well, opponent notwithstanding. Flores has turned the defense around this season and his aggressive style is a hard one for offenses to adjust to when they're used to seeing soft umbrella coverage every week.

Former Packers

  • Dean Lowry missed the game with a groin injury.

Next Week

The Vikings play the Broncos.

You have to admit Campbell has some stones in going for it on 4th and 2 with 1:47 left despite already being in field goal range. The short pass was completed, clock killed, FG made, and no Chargers comeback.

The Chargers have seemingly mastered the art of losing close games over the years, so maybe the Packers can cash in on this trend--that's if our defense can keep us hanging in there in the first place (say a prayer).

"This week TJ Hockenson got the call. The former bust at tight end had 11 catches for 134 yards and a TD."
Not sure why/how you determined TJ a bust at one point, but I certainly wouldn't mind reading a follow-up from you on that. The way you say it actually sounds personal? Anyway....

Some writers and fans here are prone to labeling other players a bust quickly, but endure years of crap to make such an evaluation of the Packers. Heck, they even herald them as future Packer HOF'ers.

To address the retort that will come, yes, I pegged Nick Perry from the day drafted, as a bust, but as an OLB for GB.
I was right.
He did know how to steal money though.

The Packers also know how to leave the safe open.

I don't blame Perry for taking the money, just as i didn't blame Rodgers, Preston Smith, or any other player ever, for taking the money.

Don't hate the player, hate the banker.

I didn't hate the player, I didn't like him as an OLB, and especially didn't like the FO for paying him to continue to fail at that position.

I agree crazy......

As a matter of fact, in a way.... i think the vikings stole Hockenson

The Packers 4 tight ends have a combined 403 yards and 1 TD.

Hockenson has 681 yards and 4 TD's
******************************
Here's my view, through my lens......

Yes, we see flash plays once in awhile from our young QB and receivers.
Thank God for that right?

But....you don't have, even an average offense.
They make a good catch...here n there.

Right now, and....hang on to your kool aid.

Right now, the Packer offense is a hot mess, in week 11.

The Packers are no where near the top of any leaderboard in any statistical offensive category, whatsoever.
The best individual producers from the Packers are.....

Running back = 32nd and 52nd

Receivers and tight ends = 54th...73rd....85th....109th....110th....

Quarterback = 20th..14 yards above Joshua Dobbs.

Look, bemoaning the Lions being at the peak of their powers isn't the end of the world. They're the Lions. They'll screw it up. Even when they manage to win their first division title in the last 30 years, I FULLY expect them to blow it in their first possible opportunity in the playoffs. Then Ben Johnson will leave. Jared Goff is already a stone aged pony at QB who can't play well unless everything around him is good. He's Kirk Cousins lite.

The Vikings? Yeah. Their defensive staff is better than ours and that sucks. But Dobbs has played seven quarters. He will come back down to earth, even with Jefferson back. AND it's the Vikings. They have lost 27 times in the first round of the playoffs in their history. They'll make the playoffs, and then lose. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

The Bears suck.

The Packers are young. And after the foolishness of 2021 and 2022, they are FINALLY on the mend. Love has all the tools and is looking better. The young WRs and TEs need to grow, but they are doing just that. And we have more cap room and a lot of draft capital looking forward. No, we won't make the playoffs this year. BUT we are 1-5 in one score games. We have been VERY unlucky. We very well could be ahead of the Vikings right now in the standings. MLF needs to grow some balls, fire the entire defensive staff, and find an aggressive defensive scheme. Some added talent at OT, S, CB, RB in the offseason.

We will be just fine. No one in the NFCN is going to win it all this year. And the Bears, Vikings and Lions fans are getting their kicks in on us now after we've whipped their asses for 30 plus years. I'm old enough to remember 2008. The early CHTV days were EXACTLY THE SAME. "Rodgers is no Favre, you're gonna suck forever, blah blah blah."

Yawn. We'll be fine. Back to our division dominance at least by 2025. And that's the floor. These other teams are losers for a reason: Their owners.

The Packers are young but poorly coached. MLF and his assistants in my view have proven they have no clue how to coach and develop young players. MLF was out there defending barry yesterday and blaming the players for giving up 200 yards rushing. He's clueless.

The 3-6 Packers have to play the Chargers, Lions, and Chiefs next.

Some think the Packers will be 3-9 after.

Here's what i know...the Packers will play 2 winning teams back to back for the first time this season.
This is the meat of their schedule, the hardest it gets.

Here's what i think....with the Chargers being a home game, i think they finish this trifecta at 4-8.

If i'm wrong, i see two more wins the rest of the season to finish at 5-12.

No matter what happens, i look forward to Gute's State of the Team address.

I see them going 0-3 these next three games, and the Giants possibly the only other win, unless they get DeVito'ed.The Panthers could be another, but I wouldn't bet on it. GB might be what Young needs, an opponent who likes to beat themselves.
The main thing, lately, is about progress, and that needs to be measured by the rematch play against those in the Division, and less against first time opponents who might not be taking GB serious enough, though rightfully so, at this juncture.
No team is afraid of the Lambeau mystic anymore, and it doesn't look good to reclaim it against LAR, KC book ending Det on Turkey day.
Chi and GB in the last game will be for a moral victory, after being demoralized near all season long.
Just saying, not officially predicting. Though I do have 108 win picks so far in a pick'em.

Lions HC Dan Campbell on fourth down calls: 'Just wear a diaper before some of these games".

Oh boy, you know some Lion's fans will be wearing diapers to games. I know I would. Saves a trip waiting in line for the MEN's restroom to boot.

I like that Campbell's style.

Nah, it's more fun watching LaFlower on the sidelines. Waiting for the exact moment he starts to cry.
