NFL owners vote to ban hip-drop tackle at Annual League Meeting.

ARTICLE 18. HIP-DROP TACKLE. It is a foul if a player uses the following technique to bring a runner to the ground:

(a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and
(b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner's leg(s) at or below the knee.

Penalty: For a Hip-Drop Tackle: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down.

I could see this being a bigger problem for players than the rules that protect the QB. Flags are going to be flying early next year. How does this affect the draft? Are more smallish/lighter DB's removed from the board than were before? Guys that have to use their body weight to bring bigger guys down. Maybe a new threshold of 200 lbs? Only take guys that already form tackle well? Did the Packers foresee this coming and was one reason why they signed Josh Jacobs? And decided to bring back Dillon? Do the Packers want to go bigger and incorporate a more power running game in the offense? I'd like to see CHTV tackle this new rule and what affect it's going to have.

This rule would be BS IMO. The defense is already at a disadvantage. This is going to make for a lot of missed tackles.

Moo,

"landing on and trapping the runner's leg(s) at or below the knee."

That's the part of the new rule that nobody's addressing. Without that, it's not a penalty. With that? I saw many severe injuries last season.

The question is if refs can call it as written.

"The question is if refs can call it as written"

We know the answer to that question. I hope it's reviewable. Mistakes are going to happen.

The bigger problem to me is they are again causing hesitation in a defender's ability to tackle. Football is obviously an incredibly fast decision-making sport. Seconds or fraction of seconds to get it right. 180-190ish DB's already having to make sure they tackle a RB/TE, etc. that outweigh them by 20+ lbs, not only in the correct part of the body, now even further with the correct way. That added short hesitation could get you run by, run over, or worse, get the DB hurt while he's hoping not to get flagged. Some guys probably will have no problem with it, others will. Practice and muscle memory can alleviate some tackling issues, if they are given time and ok to practice it. Again, we know the answer on that.

BTW, who the hell would want to be a ref? The rules are so convoluted now that not even experts can agree. Who is most hated on the football field? Not the opposing fans. Not the opposing team. The refs. Underpaid for what they have to put up with. And fans, coaches, and players wonder why there has been a falloff in confidence for the right call.

Hi Aaron
My daughter also spent a semester as a cast member at Disney World. A "highlight" was when they closed the park after 9/11 believing that the park might be the next target. Crazy times. Even with that happening her experience was wonderful. I hope your daughter has an equally positive experience.
