Cory's Corner: Mike McCarthy needs to come clean

In Thursday’s 35-14 dismantling of the Bears, Damarious Randall was benched for ineffective play after the 2015 first rounder showed more coverage warts. The NFL Network reported there was an argument between Randall and a coach and before long, Randall left the entire stadium.

The first rule when handling a crisis is to get out in front of it and be as transparent as possible.

To do the opposite only continues confusion, which is what Mike McCarthy is dancing in right now.

In Thursday’s 35-14 dismantling of the Bears, Damarious Randall was benched for ineffective play after the 2015 first rounder showed more coverage warts. The NFL Network reported there was an argument between Randall and a coach and before long, Randall left the entire stadium.

“It was my decision to send him to the locker room,” said McCarthy on Friday. “And frankly, we got to be real honest here. We’re going to start evaluating and regulating and conversation and things that go on an NFL sideline. Let’s be real here. I know some would like to make a good drama series out of it or something, but it’s not going to happen here.”

Give me a break Mike. You have enough regulations at 1265 Lombardi Avenue. The argument was in plain view of everyone to see. And if that was missed, it was obvious when Josh Hawkins was playing instead of Randall.

What’s he going to do? Put a huge tent over the entire Packers’ sideline? The local media have been handcuffed by what they can do and where they can be during the pre and postgame. The reason is the Packers. Ever since the Packers have beefed up their media presence with writers and photographers, they have made a concerted effort to control the message. The reason why the official Packers TV station is the lowest rated station in the Green Bay market is because the Packers know that a middling station isn’t going to ask the tough questions that need to be asked.

Human nature tells us to hide and cover up, but it’s time for McCarthy to be honest. Not just for the sake of the media, but the rest of the team. The other 52 players saw what happened. They would like to know what was said and what the resolution was.

“When we come back Tuesday, Damarious will be ready to roll with the rest of our football team,” McCarthy said.

I disagree. Insubordination isn’t something that you just sweep under the rug. What happens if this occurs again?

McCarthy may not want a drama, but that’s exactly what he started. If you want to get straight answers, don’t bother asking McCarthy because he will give you a buffet of coach speak all wrapped up in a bevy of untruths.

Rip the band-aid off Mike. Was the Randall benching something that you talked about before? Will he be fined or suspended for leaving the stadium? These are fair questions that the leader of a multimillion organization should have answers for.

Because this isn’t going away. After Tuesday’s practice, McCarthy will be asked about it again and when Randall struggles again during a game and potentially gets benched again, this episode will be brought up.

So just be straight with everyone McCarthy. You’ll save yourself time later on from having to answer a lot of the same questions.

Welcome to the world of propaganda Cory, Big Mike only has to give a minimum of information and the information given is always going to be carefully worded.
The coaches are required to give a certain amount of access to the media and they are going to give out an eye dropper of real information. You've seen Ted Thompson's pressers. It's all about misdirection and cliche' out there and not just in sports. "fake news" haha. Luckily it's only football.

Yep...it would only be offensive if 31 other teams weren't doing mostly the same thing. There are a couple teams that tend to be more open--JJ loves the camera so much that he's going to dish more than other GMs (and he undermines his coach in the process)--but most deal in disinformation and misdirection.

One other thing: why do people keep using the term "insubordination" in this case? Has anyone seen anyplace where Randall refused to do anything he was told to do?...aside from covering a receiver, anyway? Please fill me in if I've missed anything.

I 100 percent agree on the insubordination. Throwing a temper tantrum and being absolutely horrible at your job are not insubordination. Neither is disagreeing with your boss.

Maybe going public with this stuff ruins the trust between players and coaching staff. We dont have a right to know, and frankly we dont need to know. Either the issue gets corrected or Randall is not long for the roster. RELAX.

I agree. I don't need to know how the sausage is made. All that matters is the product on the field. If McCarthy wants to play the Randall issue close to the vest, I have no issues with that. There is no fan entitlement to the inner workings of the locker room, sideline and roster decisions.

And how do you know it's been swept under the rug? You don't, so why perpetuate a myth...because it looks good in an article?

If one of the writers for Cheesehead got into a bit of a trouble, would you be compelled to divulge everything that occured and detail whatever punishment was dealt?
If they don't want to detail and embarass a current team member, I'm fine with it. Soap operas are written in Hollywood....this is football.

Above is some real talk about Damarious Randall. I've said all off season that he's just not right for our team (mostly due to his performance) and was met with lots of push back. I guess now everyone else is seeing it too.

But I hope that he figures out whatever is going on between his ears because he's not going to see another contract with the Packers but he could with another team if he doesn't shoot himself in the foot.

I would respectfully suggest there is s direct relationship between your use of terms like " brain washed Packer fanboys" and the "pushback" you get. As the use of the former wanes, the intensity of the latter will as well.

It is interesting article...

Are you serious? You think that team should wash their dirty loundry in public?

If so, why not open complete play book to the public. Lets share game plan few days before game, just to inform juornalists and reporters, as well as complete public, so they can understand what Packers are playing. Maybe to call play by play on speakerphones, so the public can hear what the next play will be. Why not? THAT IS OUR RIGHT!

I have no doubts that players and all involved are already completely informed about the issue. And when you will ask players, they will claim they do not know nothing more than public (yeah, I believe them completely!). They will lie to you looking directly in your eyes. Not because they are hypocrites, but because they have one article in their contract! That article says that they are not allowed to say everything they want about how team is dealing with adversity...
Maybe some of them will be willing. Maybe, but that means they are out of football, if not immediately, latest after the season...
So, calm down and let organization, highly praised by players and haevy spitted by journalists, deal with their internal problems...

I'm not even sure I believe McCarthy when he says that he (McCarthy) kicked Randall off the sidelines. I don't discount the possibility that Randall left on his own and McCarthy is covering for him.

And I'm ok with that. McCarthy is the one responsible for keeping the team moving in the same direction. He can do that however he wishes. It is fine by me if what he says/does in private and his public comments are two entirely different things.

I never expected MM to discuss the Randall situation with the media. The Packers as an organization have usually preferred to handle things internally. We know what the argument on the sidelines was about. Randall blew his coverage on the Bears TD and he was pulled from the game and he didn't like it.

I'm guessing that Randall didn't understand his assignment on the play because it looked like he didn't even try to cover the Bears receiver or he was just badly beaten on the play.
MM probably told him that if he can't handle being pulled to stay in the locker room for the 2nd half. Maybe there was an injury issue, we'll probably never know.

The point is what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. That is the only approach that can be taken because it is the only approach that works for everybody, players and coaches. If teams start publicly discussing every argument or disagreement that happens in the locker room during the season the coverage will never end and we may as well watch a soap opera as watch a sporting event.

The key is that the team handles it, moves on and it doesn't become a distraction for the team. If Coach Lombardi was here Randall would probably be gone already and all you would get from Lombardi is "Mr. Randall is no longer a member of the Green Bay Packers football team". Case closed. Let's face it MM barely gives the media an injury status, he's not going to get into internal team matters. Thanks, Since '61

Airing this stuff out in view of the public does nothing but feed the drama crazed media. This is exactly why I don't ever expect the Packers to do hard knocks. McCarthy has proven he is a great leader of men and his players trust. McCarthy has never "lost" the team and he is professional through and through. Look back to the Fail Mary game where he took the high road and for that I have a great amount of respect for McCarthy.

We have 10,000 foot view of what actually went on and maybe it's such an insignificant happening that there is no point dragging it out in the media.

You're stirring the pot, Cory. Not really sure what you expect to come of it, either.

Anyway, McCarthy is obviously trying to get Randall out of his own head and playing his best ball. There is zero chance being transparent with media and and fans will aid him in that goal. In fact, I would argue telling everyone what's going on would only hurt any efforts to get Randall back.

So we wait and see. The truth will become evident in time, whether we get the full story or not.

Some of these players are still pretty young and haven't matured yet. I laud MM for not airing this dirty laundry. Mike's comment that he sat Randall as a coach's decision is enough for me- I can read between the lines. I also commend him for saying a new week with Damarius included in practice. I would think that DR would appreciate MM keeping this in a private discussion.

If MM has some differences with Randall, then it’s their business and should be kept in house, IMO. If Randall would start playing like a first round pick I don’t think there would be an issue. Now let’s start getting healthy again and get ready for four tough games. Go Pack.

I can't express how idiotic it would be for MM to be as "transparent as possible". For some reason, fans or even writers feel like they are part of the team and deserve some answers. You're not part of the team, and you don't deserve any answers. As long as the team considers it handled, that's all that really matters.

Think of it this way, would any company make public a bad employee review? I don't even need to answer that. There is player-coach trust level, and that includes not saying negative stuff to the media and such. MM can stand at the podium all day and say, "it's internal. Next question."

Yes, McCarthy should say as little as possible about injuries and player misconduct but how he goes about it is stupid and insulting. TT handles it right by saying our policy is to never speak about those things. Nothing misleading yet ho harm done to anyone or anything. I'd suggest McCarthy spend his time revising how WRs line up and what kinds of routes they run. His 80's type WCO is so passe. We need a new HC badly. GM too for that matter. Dom needs to be put to pasture. Winnie Moss too.

btw - too bad for Dalvin Cook that he tore his ACL. That should really hurt Minnesota's chances to win the division this year. Likely cost them the game vs Lions.

Was interesting to read recently that TT debated between picking Cook or King right up till he turned his pick in on draft day. Obviously the team need was much greater at CB and draft was much deeper in RBs. Suggests however that TT is open to picking a RB high in the draft. Joe Mixon and D Cook were great value picks in the 40s. A stud RB would help 12 big time and minimize the exposure of our defense.

I concur with the consensus of the comments. That said...

I'd really like to know which coach Randall argued with. I think I could infer some things if the argument was with Perry, Whitt, Capers or some other coach.

I am unclear whether this argument took place on the sidelines or in the locker room. I gather that it occurred on the sidelines before the half ended. I suspect that any number of beat writers know the answers to my questions but have decided not to inform their customers, the fans.

If the media reports are correct, the it was Whitt in the booth who made the call, probably told Capers fight away. Perry was the one on the sidelines, handling the secondary sub packages who told Randall. I too wonder about the timing and if there was more than one argument. Even for the Packers, the silence is out character.

Good point about the hand picked writers by the Packers. I miss the days when there were beat reporters that gave it the way it was.... as far as: "The other 52 players saw what happened. They would like to know what was said and what the resolution was." Do you really think that they DON'T know exactly what happened and the result? I'm betting the whole room knew before they got out of their uniforms!
