Fire Joe Barry?

Why?

First of all, Barry's 2023 Packer defense is actually performing as well or better than the previous 6 defenses he coordinated (including the last 2 seasons in Green Bay). So why would anyone be surprised by the results?

Second, firing Joe Barry at this stage would indicate that coordinating a below average unit with 8 1st round picks (7 if you exclude Stokes) and 3 highly-compensated free agents on it was unacceptable when, in reality, having a mediocre to bad defense has been the norm in Green Bay for the past 13 seasons.

Third, everyone outside of the man who hired him and the few remaining apologists for the hire know that Joe Barry should never have been hired. They also know he should have been fired after last season. Why bring attention to those poor decisions and fire someone under contract like Barry 4 games into the season ... unless the goal was to try and get the best product on the field?

The problem is and has been MLF....Stephan A on ESPN is correct...time to start looking at MLF and his failures..

Exactly PP. MLF was promoted 1 level above his competency. Yes, many will say "what about those 2 x 13 win seasons"? MLF didn't overly influence those records. He leaned on Rodgers and Adam's to outscore all those opponents.

MLF wants to be the nice guy. He is incapable of being tough when hard decisions need to be made at the top. This is NOT the personality of an NFL HC.

I feel sorry for these terrific young players who must endure such career threatening decision making. And, of course, we fans suffer to a lesser extent...

Perhaps the next cast should ask the same of Butkus/Stenovich.

Ultimately, the key problem isn’t either, although they are certainly problems.

Without an obvious replacement in house, the key question on firing now is whether having Barry or Stenovich/Butkus out of the room has more value than the possible temporary downgrade in experience. I tend to think there’s a stronger case for that being true of Stenovich/Butkus.

Really though, the true source of ire here is that we failed to replace Barry last off season and are now seeing exactly the same failings. Nothing has changed, as you say. The problem isn’t Barry in isolation it’s the person who hired and retained him, who sets the tone on both sides of the ball.

LaFleur is not going to hire or manage the kind of person you seem to call for. It’s at odds with his personality, with how he runs his team and staff. There’s a better argument for saying leave the coaches this year and replace LaFleur.

Bring in a person with a much more assertive concept of expectations and mindset to change the understanding of both coaches and players as to what’s expected what won’t be tolerated. That may include having the knowledge to tell them that they are going to do this or not that this week. Who knows, that may get more out of Barry and co.

Yes, Murphy is unlikely to do that, but that’s on him. It is not a good reason for us to focus on symptoms, not the root cause. I actually think it would be more feasible to promote Bissacia or pay a semi retired HC to come in and shake things up for the year given our coaching resources than to replace Barry or Stenovich.

LaFleur being removed now is both more practical and more likely to be effective in season. Drag someone like Dennis Green out of retirement if Bissacia isn’t seen as an option. He’d shake up Barry. There are some others too.

It all starts and ends with Murphy. He holds the reins, all of them.

While the on-field product is MLF's, the decision on that leader was all Murphy.

Firing Barry or Stenavich in-season is an answer to nothing. The board needs to act to trim Murphy's authority over all aspects of the football operation and get it back in the hands of the GM.

Wrong You're -just Wrong!
Andy Reid and Fritz Were together
For a Super Bowl.
Reid was with the eagles before the Chiefs.
Then there was Capers in 2010.

It never was about discipline.
You're thinking Lombardi.
The game changed.
It's about the studs and scheme.
Who drafts them?
We passed on so many that ended up with the chiefs.
So get off the Murphy!
He must Fire Gutey for the talent he never got.
And take the 3-4-4 with him.
Because he never drafted the trench correctly!

CW- You're right that it's the head of the snake here that needs to be replaced. I do not trust "His" hiring practices or who he seems to believe creates "continuity" to be replacing Barry or anyone else. I also do not trust MM to hire a new HC either if his involvement is even near 1% participation.
I would like to see them hire a Jim Harbaugh type of coach, only a little less quirky and weird as Jim Harbaugh.
We need someone tough, smart, fair and willing to make changes the second something sours.

" Drag someone like Dennis Green out of retirement.."

I respect your passion, CW, and admire your tenacity, but Dennis shuffled off this mortal coil in 2016. I know, I know, you wrote someone "like" him so I get it. And, sure, it would shake things up if the Packers had a Weekend at Bernie's coach propped up in the corner. Um, wait a minute!

Too animated in the locker room after LaFleur? Not emoting enough?

Oh, OK, you got me on that one.

Yes. Let’s spend the entire offseason reviewing film and making plans, and then let’s panic because we’re 2-2 in September.

Sheeesh.

Seems like that’s what LaFleur says is necessary. When you get things this wrong and found no answers. That tends to happen. Yes, I know you intended sarcasm.

No, he’s not saying that. He’s saying we will make some adjustments. Nobody is getting fired.

Does anyone realize we could be 4-2 after this road trip? Or that it would be natural for a young team to improve as the season progresses?

Lol.

“I mean, you saw it. We got our ass kicked,” LaFleur said. “If I knew, it wouldn’t have happened, It wasn’t good enough. They whipped us. They manhandled us. Again, if I knew the answer to that, it wouldn’t have happened.”

“But, every area, there’s a lot of improvement out there for us. I think any time you go out there and you can’t effectively run the football and conversely can’t stop the run, that’s a recipe for losing football. And that’s what happened tonight.”

“We're going to have to do something different because it's insane to do the same things over and over again and expect a different result.”

Open your eyes.

It was one game, not the Apocalypse.

Talk to me again when we’re 4-2.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Do you fire your portfolio manager every time there's a downturn? Do you fire your doctor when you get sick? Do you fire employees on their second bad day, or first? Do you divorce your wife often?

I have learned....the hard way.....that it's better to work with something/someone, and try to improve what you have, rather than constantly burning it down and building something new. That's a waste of time and effort.

The Braintrust.....all the way from Murphy to Sock and Jocks...took stock in the offseason. They let some people leave, they made some trades, they signed some FAs, they drafted some guys. But now, we want to just throw six months of work away and start over with new people. I think that's crazy, actually.

When the season is over, if you are right about the Packers, we'll have a poor record and there'll be big changes and I'll be in favor of that. But right now, we're 2-2. Favre started 2-3. Rodgers started 2-3. We didn't fire a bunch of people then, although we did make some changes after the season, as we always do. Making changes in the middle of a season, like we did with McCarthy, is a drastic action, kind of like cutting off a hand so it won't hurt anymore.

We play Vegas on 10 days rest. Then we have a bye week. Then we have Denver. Today is Monday, which means we'll be playing 2 games.....against some weaklings....over the next 20 days. Lots of practices. People will get healthier......yeah, our line got out played.....Runyan and Tom were hurt and Jenkins was inactive. Detroit's 1st line is better than our 2nd. I'll concede that. Firing Joe Barry doesn't change that. Time will.

Prediction: The Packers will be no worse than 5-5 when they play on Thanksgiving Day. They'll STILL be in the playoff hunt. Maybe Love-Watson-Doubs-Jones will get to play together a little and it helps. Maybe Tom and Runyan and Jenkins heal. Maybe the offense stays on the field a little more, keeping our defense off the field a little more.

The worst team in the league in defending the run on a yards/attempt measure? Buffalo, at 5.9 yards/attempt. So why don't teams just run on them all the time? Because Buffalo puts enough offensive pressure on teams that they feel they can't grind it out on the ground fast enough to keep up on the scoreboard. And that's the way it'll be in Green Bay when we get the offense going.

Look, we've scored 100 points, some by the defense, in 4 games despite everything. That's not horrible. We've given up 96 points in 4 games, some of those by being stupid on punts. These are AVERAGE numbers, accomplished by a young team that is going to get better. Exercise a little patience; you can do that with your eyes wide open.

GBP fans definitely need to talk if we are 2 - 4. I recommend waiting until after our game #12 (verses KC Chiefs) before discussing the potential future of this coaching staff.

GPG!

I think that's a better idea.

As I read the road ahead, we've got two winnable games coming up against weaklings. We have extra time to rest and prepare for each of them. If we look bad against them, then it might be time to talk about it.

We play 10 games before Thanksgiving. Then we play the Lions in Detroit, then we get extra time to get ready for KC. We could be 6-6, 7-5, 5-7....but we have a lot of winnable games the rest of the way. I remember in 2003 we were 6-6 coming out of the Thanksgiving game, won the rest of the way, and advanced in the playoffs until Favre turned it over in overtime, throwing it up for grabs the first time he touched it.

I suspect we'll win at least 10 games this year. We can talk about changes after the season.

We will continue to beat bad teams and teams that match up well. Winning against those proves nothing. It’s past time to hang any more hats on things like the 4 pre Lions victories over awful or incapacitated teams last year. We should still beat the Raiders. It won’t change anything that matters one iota.

Well, it would prove that we can win games we're supposed to win.

We're going to win 10 games this year. And no amount of apocalyptic gloom and doom is going to change that, not one iota.

I am going to comment to this even though I stoutly refuse to listen to this podcast.

All of the fan comments here are valid. Yes, it starts at the top with MM. But MM seems to have a tight hold on this organization through its non-football BOD. How much are car dealers and bankers going to influence football decisions. Argh.

Barry has been an abject failure as a DC throughout his career. He shouldn't have been hired in the first place. Most certainly, he should have been fired last season. But it seems that the nice guy bromance of MLF and Barry trumps all winning logic - MM interference aside.

MLF is not strong. His hires and staff - outside of Rich B - are politely, subpar. He and Barry may find a solution for 1 game but I have ZERO confidence it will longer term or sustainable. We need a DC who is aggressive and can offer options of his own - not ask his offensively minded HC to help him with defensive scheming? It's ridiculous! The question is can MLF work with a tough minded football personality (Rich B aside)?

I still think the best short term/in-house solution is to fire Barry and put Rich B in there temporarily. You can then take some time and find a replacement DC. A replacement would eventually weed out the poor coaches underneath him.

MLF can't scapegoat Rodgers this year to keep his job next year. Barry stays. For now.
