Packers 29 Lions 22: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Team finally gets rolling just in time for December

(I know I'm not Ken, but next man up...)

A transformation is finally happening in Green Bay. The dearly departed Rasul Douglas once said, "After a few weeks you're not a rookie anymore". It seems the youth movement the Packers started in 2023 has finally shown signs of maturity. From the outset, I saw a team that didn't come to Detroit just to compete but came to win, and so they did. Don't get me wrong they're far from a finished product, and I'm pretty sure the players themselves are aware of this. However, whatever started in preseason, through training camp, and into the week-to-week practices of the regular season started to really take hold this fine Thanksgiving afternoon.

But for all the wonderful things we saw, we were still regularly reminded of the many things there are to improve upon. Players running into each other, players not understanding where to line up, abysmal run defense, missed kicks, questionable game management...the list goes on. With the Packers now 1 win away from .500 and the reigning champions waiting next week those errors will need to be cleaned up sooner than later. When you really think about it, even though there weren't any really egregious errors during the game, it's kind of nice to see the Packers still found a way to win on the road against a division rival that's had their number the last few years; and dispatched them so easily a home a couple of months ago.

GAME BALLS

Jordan Love

Love was the offense as he contributed 307 of their 377 yards(81.4%) on Thursday; passing for 268 yards and running for 39 more. Love looked composed and in control all game long, and he found his receivers downfield for nice gains, resulting in 3 touchdowns on the day. His 2nd half-scamper for 37 yards was a healthy reminder that he can do it with his arm and his legs. I'm sure Love still has plenty of doubters, but I'm sure he made more than a handful of believers, as this was his best game all season posting highs in passer rating and QBR of 125.5 and 90.6 respectively.

Christian Watson

I thought it was Christmas rather than Thanksgiving when on the first play of the game Christian Watson high points a ball in coverage for 53 yards. Watson looked like he had finally gotten the monkey off his back all season long, pulling in 5 of his 7 targets for 94 yards and a touchdown. With 2 touchdowns and 2 games, let's hope he can build upon this success against the Chiefs next week.

Rashan Gary

With 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles (1 recovery) with 1 of the fumbles resulting in a defensive touchdown, it's a legitimate question on who had the larger impact between Jordan Love and Rashan Gary. Gary led the way for a Packers defense that pressured Lions QB Jared Goff a whopping 27 times, which included 12 additional hits excluding Gary's 3 sacks.

LAME CALLS

Ice Cold

Despite the Packers' hot start that saw them get 20 points in the first quarter alone, they would only go on to score 9 the rest of the way. The Packers had 5 straight possessions that resulted in one field goal between the 2nd and 3rd quarters before getting their final touchdown of the afternoon. The Lions are widely seen as a team that may push deep into the playoffs, and the Packers play the reigning Super Bowl Champions Kansas City next week; if they hope to be competitive, Head Coach Matt LaFleur is going to have to find ways for the Packers to sustain drives and get more points, because what happened today is a formula to get buried by some of the more high caliber teams across the league.

Joe Barry

It's a good thing the Packers were able to get 20 points in the 1st quarter because the defense slowly bled away the lead the rest of the way. The Lions hung a more than respectable 140 yards rushing on the Packers' defense, which allowed them to get back in the game. If it weren't for the turnovers, this game definitely could've gone the other way as the Lions put up 464 yards of total offense. I know the Packers are missing Jaire Alexander and Devondre Campbell right now, but 450+ yards of offense is still unacceptable.

THREE AND OUT

-- A.J. Dillon and Patrick Taylor made a few plays out there...but I really do emphasize the "few" part; both struggled to get going at 3.1 and 3.7 yards per carry respectively. Jordan Love was nearly the game's leading rusher with 39 yards to Dillon's 43. I know Patrick Taylor has the experience in this offense but maybe it's time to see what James Robinson can do? Let's hope Emmanuel Wilson comes back sooner than later, a better rushing attack might do wonders to help the offense from having extensive scoring droughts during a game.

-- The Packers' offensive line had a major comeback against Detroit after being borderline unwatchable against them back in September. Jordan Love was able to mostly stay clean as he did not get sacked (although he was hit a couple of times) all game.

-- 29 points was the most the Packers have scored since Week 1 against the Bears, and it could have been more; Anders Carlson had another uneven outing going 1 of 2 from the field at 2 of 3 for extra points. I get it, the miss was from 63 yards so I won't slight him too much, but the missed extra point attempts have got to come to an end. The Lions were 0 for 5 on 4th down during the game, but I shudder to think what situation the offense may have been put in had they been able to sustain an additional drive and get more points; it wouldn't have been the first time a missed FG or XP came back to haunt them later in the game.

Everything I have read, not CH TV but elsewhere, is that the loss was on the Lions and that they basically gave the game away with the fumbles. Yes that had a part in it but I maintain that we gave the Lions a pretty good arse kicking in their back yard.

They happen to forget about all the packers not available to play including about the enter defensive backfield!

Lions lost because Campbell made terrible decisions all game long. If they punt and kick field goals when they are supposed to, the game goes into overtime. -

So let's give MLF and this Team all the credit in the world.

Campbell wasn't the only head coach making questionable fourth down decisions. LaFleur had a couple of his own. If he kicks field goals rather than going for it when they were inside the Lion's 30, this game doesn't have a chance of overtime.

Before analytics, there used to be an old maxim that said "Always, always take the points". Not sure analytics has this one right and "old school" may still be the best option when points are available.

That was a game where turnovers hid the inability to stop the run, with a lot of help from Campbell. At near 5 yards a carry, the Lions might have won just rushing continuously despite our lead.

Our OL was poor, which makes what Love did more impressive. Again, constant pressure and no ability to run block. LaFleur, seemingly urged not to go cautious by Love, at least came out calling aggressive plays, but then retreated once we were ahead.

Love won this game with Gary assisting at critical moments but with marginal help from LaFleur and his coaching but a great deal from Campbell. That fake punt was a gift worthy of Christmas.

This was a game that highlighted the talent on the the roster and depth. Players over coaches. The OL and run D remain debilitating holes not even papered over. Optimism is warranted, but not if the coaching doesn’t change.

I look for Andy Reed to run a fake punt to embarrass Campbell...

Also, it does indeed show the talent is there. There were a couple of times yesterday that I swore I was watching Mahomes at QB. I hope Musgrave is ok. Poor kid is pissing blood.

I'm not sure that I agree with you on that one CW - relative to the week 4 outing, they played markedly better. RG is still a problem, but in all, they made Aiden Hutchinson irrelevant.

Correct. The pass-pro was quite good. One can fairly criticize the run blocking, but the o-line and the RB's gave Jordan ample time to throw. Ask Goff what it looks like when you O-Line gives you no time.
It looks to me like Jordan Love is starting to see the value in trusting what he sees. The ball is coming out quick. That's the biggest difference in the last few games IMHO.

Remember MM in SEA in the NFCCG - he played conservatively and took the 3 too.

By and large I agree with you though.

In MLF's case yesterday, with a young team and backup quality RB's, I'd take the points (and willed him to do it).

Psychologically too, if you allow a team to make a 4th down stop, then you give them belief...... and that's a powerful enemy to quell.

Joseph's review of this Game was spot on and unbiased. The Pack's ILBs are not playing downhill and giving up 140 yards on the ground is unacceptable. The Defense has to get off the field to give the offense a chance at more points. 3rd and 21, Barry goes into prevent and gave back most of the yardage to set up a 4th and five. This guy never learns. Love will have to keep playing on fire and pass this team to the promised land, if they have a chance down the road. Rhyan needs to be the RG.

"This guy never learns." Old dog, no new tricks. With Barry, what you have seen is what you will get. He has a fat dossier of almost 7 years DC performance evaluations. To be kind, all the evals are below expectations.

His philosophy is to prevent chunk passing plays at all costs. Bleed yards and hope by game's end your defensive heart is still beating. The hope is for turnovers, the great equalizer, to stop the bleeding...because every OC knows you can run and pass for first downs and move the ball on a Joe Barry D. MLF seems very comfortable with this fact.

My hope was the old dog Barry would learn some new tricks. Nope.

Agree. I was more impressed with the defense this game. I don't think Barry is good for us long term but at least I was not totally pissed.

Maybe I am getting used to our defensive play. Or possibly I was so fricken happy with Love this game and the past 4 games really that I over looked Barry's defense a bit.

As I have said multiple times this season, the number one thing we need to see this year is if Love is 'the guy'. He is trending towards that type of QB and that makes it so much easier and faster for us to get back to the playoffs in the near future. I know many feel like we can this year and it is good to feel that way but to really be a consistent winner I think we are a year or two away. Next year's draft will be so important for us to get some studs and build depth.

I am just giddy right now after watching that game yesterday.

I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the excellent play of Corey Ballentine. He has filled in for Jaire for the past few weeks, but hasn’t received much mention.
He was born in Jamaica, and was picked in the sixth round of the 2019 draft by the Giants, and has played on several teams (including the Lions) since then. Therefore, he’s more of a veteran than most of this team, and he’s in his prime years.
He is six foot, ran a 4.5 40, had a 40” vertical and 6.8 3-cone, and has long arms. He had a 9.6 RAS! He also was an excellent leader and hard classroom worker. Draft guys saw him as developmental, with great tools and attitude, so it seems the Packers may have picked him up just as he blossomed! I don’t know why, but I got a bit of a “Tramon Williams in 2010 flashback” during this game.
Go Corey!

Best for Jaire and Savage to get their butts on the field vs K.C. Ballentine is a #6 guy at best. Valentine played the SEC wide receivers very well the past three years and he was under-drafted. He has to learn how to play the ball.
When Barry went Okie with 5 defenders at the LOS, good things happened. The guy is a product of Nepotism, not Merit.

Don’t judge Dillon by his average in this game.
He looked very good in the first half and also blocked well in pass pro.
His average suffered when they ran him in obvious situations in the second half; and our line is terrible at that.

I couldn't count the number of times the game announcers said that the Packer O-line was good in pass pro but were poor run blockers. I feel sorry for the Packer RBs having to run behind this line. Gute is going to need several of those top 100 picks in next year's draft to fix this mess.

The O line needs to play together. Stenovich and Butkus...and obviously MLF...are still trying to figure out who the top 5 are. Of all positional groups, the OL needs to play together as a unit, in synch and knowing the guy playing next to you. Communication pre snap is so critical to for effective and efficient blocking.

Musical chairs at LT continues...and now it it happening at RG. Runyon has always been an average NFL G, but this year he's falling into Myers territory. His run blocking has never been very good and now his pass blocking is subpar.

Is it the players or the coaching and their constipated decision making?

Guam,

2" difference in foot placement makes the difference between winning and losing for a lineman. Coaches simply aren't teaching them.

I'm not saying that "blue chip" linemen wouldn't help, but they need competent coaches, too.

The egregious drop by Reed was really painful; the offense was willing itself down the field in a “need” situation. Luckily, that drop and the “collision “ were the only really important “bad plays” in my opinion. The blown up two point conversion was more on Detroit making a great play.

We beat a very good 8-2 team at home with a bunch of injuries. Totally unexpected. While not a fan of MLF nor our defensive coordinator, they had the team prepared to play hard. We saw the offensive line block and the others execute well called plays. We saw improvement from our young players thrown into the fire of battle and they didn't back down. Taylor is a good guy to have on your Team. He is under-utilized in the passing game. He was given a raw deal by Gutedkunst, not being on the 53 from Day One, over some scrubs and sp teams "aces." They were lucky he was available last week.

On a few days notice, it's Taylor all the way. He's played 27 games with the Packers, including 4 _this year_ . I imagine they trust him to know all the assignments and that's why they chose him to sign to the 53. Robinson spent a few weeks on the practice squad, got released, and then resigned in an emergency. I'll wait to see what he can do.

Jordan Love is a gambler, a bootlegger, a rambler, and a side-armed gunslinger.
That's good stuff from our quarterback, with his demeanor and moderation, and no interceptions, fumbles, or even sacks taken.
***
Our young guys in general will inevitably have their ups and downs, but I'm hopeful that it will be fun to watch as an overall upward progression.
Keep the energy coming, and the focus.
Most of our games so far this season have had drama until the very end, and if we play the rest of them all the way through to the final second with determination, we just may eke out a trip to the playoffs.

Either Love can't get in sync with Watson's speed, or he doesn't have the arm to throw that long. Once again, on the first pass, Watson had to slow down, and wait for the ball. Last year Watson was much better, but Rodgers could throw it long and drop it in his hands, while Watson could maintain his speed. That Love throw could have been a TD if Love could throw it further. Watch the passes to Watson during this season; he constantly has to slow down or go back to fight a CB or safety for the ball,

I agree 1962, but I'll give Love a bit of a mulligan for now as it's his first real season and Watson has not always been available to help build chemistry. Love doesn't seem to miss Doubs the way he does Watson, and hopefully he can work on arm strength and accuracy in the off-season.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic, or just wishful thinking, but I think that Love's improved over the season thus far, His accuracy yesterday seemed better. These guys are all young without any veteran presence left in the 'receivers room' to help them along, and I think the games by Heath and Reed displayed some real positive improvement yesterday.
Secondly, I get more pissed off when they throw bombs on 2nd and 3, or 3rd and 4, get the fist down, WTF! We need points, not Ooo-Ah moments, short throws with RAC are just as good, and better play calling is a must.

He could deliver it 65 yards in high school, but he didn't have 300# maniacs rushing into his grill. As with the opening play of the game, if they are in Single High, take your shots. It has been obvious all season; this is not a running Team.

A 50 plus yarder in the air is no easy feat. It suggests otherwise.

If you seriously expect an 80% connection rate (catchable balls) on such passes, you haven’t watched football. The success rate even for the greats is 50% over careers for balls over 20 yards in the air.

The QBs job is to place the ball so the receiver can make a football move to catch it. It addition to Watson's speed, his ability to track and high point the ball was coveted.

On that first pass, Watson did have to slow down but he was so far out in front of the coverage, he had time to track the ball and take it.

Both Love and Watson did their jobs.

Love has a spectacular arm, he make every throw, from multiple platforms. Watson is a terrible route runner. If you can't count on a guy to be in the right place it's kind of hard to lead them accurately.

Everything depends on timing and anticipated route. Until a QB and receiver have that down and know where each thinks they will be and what the receiver will do if the defense intervenes, then deep passes are always a lottery, even if the QB isn’t being hurried and has time to set. We haven’t had a lot of time with Watson healthy and we all know they don’t always go as the other expects yet and that pockets are often collapsing too. We also have to accept that long passes are not high percentage plays for anyone.

So after a great win all you can do is complain about a 50 yard completed pass. Yes, it was under thrown, but a 6' 4" WR went up and got it. What about the other great passes. You must be great at parties.

It's not a lack of ability to throw that far. It's a question of getting in sync. The variety of targets may be too much to perfect so soon? This is one of the reasons why I favored keeping 4 guys with 4.3x speed.

Good article, and pretty close.
However, I doubt I was the only one waiting and cringing for Joe Barry to give this game away, the last 4 minutes were excruciating.
'Optimist' above mentioned Ballentine, and I thought he played a hella-good game, but I think Jonathon Owen also deserves at least an honorable mention. His TD was great and his tackling was good, he's not the fastest guy but came to play, and he did, his play and awareness helped. Also nice to see some of the Rooks show up, it suggests some hope for the future for Barry's replacement.
While the 'D' generally played well the Joe Barry scheme certainly limits them, and if not for a poor game by Goff this would have been way different. Thanks to Rashan Gary and pass rush for a hell of a game.
As for the offense, they scored 6 points in the final 35 minutes, and reverted to dancing (run-two-three-kick) again at the end of the game despite MLF's promise to not get conservative. He has NO semblance of a 'Shanahan Disciple", no creativity, no killer instinct, and no clue.
We luckily got away with a Win.

You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time.
-- A few dropped first downs didn't help.( MLF's fault) We threw 12 passes in the second half, so the balance was great when ahead by 15 .
-- Yeah let's throw a bunch of passes to a team willing to gamble on a big INT because they're down by 15. We have seen teams lose games by that type of philosophy.
---No creativity on that QB sneak? We won the game against an 8-2 team in a hostile environment.

Johnathan Owens hits HARD. He's a football player! A lot of the physicality on our D came from him, not to overshadow our OLBs and D line.

Completely agreed on MLF and JB. The players overcame poor coaching, although MLF's ability to draw up good plays is something I've never questioned. He made fewer glaring errors. JB's soft prevent D finally had a use at the end of the game; he NEEDS more than that one strategy.

Game Balls: Jordan Love, Christian Watson and Rashon Gary. I think that the game is beginning to "slow down" for Jordan Love. He is making better decisions and he is placing the ball better for his receivers. Hopefully he gets some of the weapons back in time for the Chiefs game.
Watson had his best game of the season and probably the best game of his career. He was great in the first half.
Gary was a dominant player on defense in this game. He had 3 sacks against the Lions.

Lame Calls: Packers Defense allowed over 450 yards against the Lions. 140 on the ground. Fortunately the Lions stopped themselves on some of their drives.
MLF play calls after Love's long run late in the 4th quarter. Love ran down to the Lions 42. Then MLF calls 3 run plays and a punt. I would have expected at least one pass play during that series to get into FG range and extend the Packers lead to 32-14. That would have iced the game at that point with about 3 minutes to play. Fortunately, after a Lions TD the Packers recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

It was a great win on the road for the Packers. Looking forward the Packers schedule looks very favorable for a playoff (wild card) run except for the Chiefs game. If the Packers can get some of their players back, Alexander, Musgrave, Campbell and Jones especially, and clean up some of their continuing mistakes anything is possible. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

those three play after Love's long run really had me riled up...go for the throat MLF, dont play it safe..jeez...and I wish Love had taken that run a few yards further, it looked like he had the space...all in all it was a nice win on the national stage.

Yes, I thought that Love could have run towards the sideline and picked up a few more yards before going out of bounds. Either way MLF should have had a pass play called on the following first down. An FG on that drive ends the game. Thanks, Since '61

Five minutes to go in game, up by 15--- you want him to run out of bounds, run for a few more while D is closing in on him and get a possible injury. Yet you don't give MLF credit for being aggressive on the 3rd and 10 pass to Watson. One could argue to run the ball at that point to bring on the 2 minute warning. Love had a defender zeroing in on him which could cause a fumble. You guys are ridiculous.

The Objective is to score points. Today's Game is different than yesteryear. Detroit could move Williams deep and score in 6.0 seconds or less. You run out the clock in the final one minute of play.

MLF abandoned what was working with 12 minutes remaining. That's giving ANY opponent way too much opportunity.

I’m actually interested to see how Kraft does in the Musgrave role. To me he’s so similar in upside that both profile to that type of usage, initially at least.

As far as Love goes, he’s always been more Favre than Rodgers. That means more head in hands moments than Rodgers but also (hopefully) more frequent Wow ones. I firmly believe that trying to fight mentality fails. I believe that’s exactly what we’ve seen from the coaches this year.

Love has shown us that he does best not trying to touch pass deep, not trying to game manage, but following his instincts for good or bad. I point firmly to the better performances in second halves verses first, when the team was forced to be aggressive. That’s a high risk paradigm, especially early on in a career, but we are seeing that Love succeeds by not being held back more than he ever will being constrained.

They have to give Love his wings and we have to live with the ups and downs that come with that. The problem is I think that LaFleur is most comfortable with a system QB. However goid he proves, I think Love is a guy best when the system is shaped around him, as Favre was. It’s going to be interesting how that plays out.

well, they don't have to, but they'll pay a price by not doing it. MLF talks like he's a gambling coach of the future "all gas, no brakes", but in reality his nuts shrink up into his abdominal cavity when the pressure mounts. Love is more Mahomes than Rodgers to be sure. Would be nice if we had a coach who was more Andy Reid.

I'm thinking Kraft's role should be different from Mysgrave's. JL10 has to make the easy layups. #85 and 28 are the ideal targets for that role, and can win games.

Musgrave comes back for the final 2 weeks of the season at the earliest.

Thanksgiving Day Massacre November 23, 2023.

Not of the 1962 Thanksgiving Day Massacre where the 8-2 Lions dominated the 10-0 Packers. There were similarities...in Detroit, another 8-2 Lions team. But the vast majority of fans in the stands and watching on TV believed this would be another easy dismantling of the 4-6 Packers.

I think the Lions were reading too many press clippings of #1 seeds, Campbell is "coach of the year", the O is unstoppable, Packers all banged up with a duct tape, baler twine roster, and so on.

Hubris often precedes the fall.

one of the Lions blogs said an easy three score win for Lions, they would play well at home to get rid of playing poorly the week before against the Bears....Packers injury list was just too long for the Pack to sustain any kind good play for the entire game...Lions would tear them up....wrong bud..

I've got a lame call and it's on the Fox Network. They are the only network of the three that I watched with yesterdays football games that didn't have a TURKEY LEG to give to the player of the game. Jordan Love should have gotten a turkey leg and if John Madden had been on that network, Jordan would have gotten one.

Greg Olsen isn't my favorite game analyst. He says so much that means so little. (It is clear he does not like the Packers, having lost to them most of his career.)

But his Love comment "well, maybe all the patience for the last 3 years with him is finally paying off." was irritating.

Good Grief, Greg...did you know Love was playing behind a future Hall of Fame and 2020, 2021 MVP? Is that the patience you refer to? That's why Love was not starting for 3 years...not because he needed team "patience" until he learned how to play.

TJ is wearing the #93 with honor and pride. I even saw him do a "Gravedigger" move after a stop. He is allowing Clark to be even more effective as a disrupter even as his teammates get the stats. Kenny creates the "stress".

“ I know I'm not Ken, but next man up...” THAT is funny!
From what I saw on the missed extra point, the laces were facing the kicker.
Given the opposition and injuries, defense did well the first part of the game.
Our receivers and QB seemed to be on the same page.
As the announcer pointed out, our offensive line is better at pass blocking than run blocking.
Matt, for the most part, dialed up a great game.

Joseph, please check this data:

FPQB 2008 first 11 games - 2599 yards passing, 17 TD + 4 by running total 21, 9 INT.
Jordan Love 2023 11 games - 2599 yards passing, 19 TD + 2 by running total 21, 10 INT.

Isn't that interesting?

FPQB had better or better to say more experienced WR and TE, better OL and similar D. I was stunned when I learned about that stats!

It was clear what the Lions believed about the Packers D. They continued to run and run and run, even when it wasn’t practical to do so.
But Barry’s D actually played the run better than expected, although we still gave up more than 450 yards. As someone already mentioned, that’s unacceptable.
Methinks when Musgrave returns, a two TE offense might look pretty good.
The Chiefs are stumbling a little, I think we have a chance.
Go Packers!!!
