Packers Have a Mixed History with the 30th Pick in the Draft

The Packers have the 30th overall pick in the draft this year. The team has a mixed history with that pick throughout the franchise's history.

The Green Bay Packers own the 30th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Four times in their history, the Packers have used the 30th overall pick in the draft. Years ago, the 30th overall pick was in the third round. In recent years, it’s late in the first.

Predictably, the results have been mixed. The Packers have drafted some good players at this spot, but they’ve also made some big mistakes including prematurely trading players away and playing some of them at the wrong position.

Here is a look back at the Packers all-time selections with the 30th overall pick in the draft:

1950 Round 3 Gordy Soltau End Minnesota

The Packers drafted Soltau in the third round of the 1950 NFL Draft with the 30th overall selection. Soltau was a multisport athlete at the University of Minnesota. He was highly regarded coming out of college and was selected to play in the College All-Star Game in Chicago where he kicked a field goal and two extra points against the defending NFL champions.

The Packers only kept Soltau in camp for a short time before trading him to the Cleveland Browns for tackle Joe Spencer. Spencer had played for Brooklyn and Cleveland in the AAFC. He spent two seasons with the Packers before an injury ended his career after the 1951 season.

Soltau went on to a productive NFL career. The Browns dealt him to the San Francisco 49ers before the start of the 1950 season. He played spent nine seasons with the Niners playing both wide receiver and kicker. Soltau was selected to three Pro Bowls and led the NFL in points scored in 1952 and 1953.

The Packers made a good pick in Soltau, but he never appeared in a regular season game for Green Bay. Soltau was inducted into the 49ers team Hall of Fame before his death at the age of 89 in 2014.

1966 Round 2 Tom Cichowski OT Maryland

The Packers chose Cichowski as a future pick in the 1966 draft in the second round with the 30th overall pick. He was also drafted by the Oakland Raiders of the AFL but decided to sign with Green Bay. After finishing his college career, the former Maryland star reported to the Packers training camp in 1967.

Unfortunately for Cichowski, the Packers were deep at offensive line and he was one of the last players cut from the team at the end of training camp.

He signed with the Denver Broncos where he played two seasons before injuries forced him to retire. Cichowski played a total of 13 games for Denver, starting nine.

Unfortunately, Cichowski never reached the potential Vince Lombardi saw in him when he drafted him in the second round.

1997 Round 1 Ross Verba OT Iowa

The Packers were coming off their victory in Super Bowl XXXI when they selected Iowa offensive lineman Ross Verba with the final pick in the first round in 1997.

Verba held out of training camp for more than three weeks before signing a contract. Still, he managed to step in and produce for the Packers as a rookie at left tackle where he started 11 regular season games in 1997. He also was Green Bay’s starting left tackle in Super Bowl XXXII against the Denver Broncos.

The Iowa product started for the Packers for four seasons. He earned a reputation as a tough and tenacious player who battled defensive linemen for every inch of turf. He did a good job of protecting Brett Favre and paving the way for Dorsey Levens and the Packers running backs.

Verba left the Packers and signed a free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns in 2001. After spending three seasons in Cleveland and then sitting out a season, Verba concluded his NFL career with the Lions in 2006.

Verba was a solid starter for four seasons in Green Bay although he was never named to a Pro Bowl or became a star player. Verba played 113 games in his NFL career, starting 107 of them.

2015 Round 1 Damarious Randall CB Arizona State

The Packers selected Arizona State defensive back Damarious Randall with the 30th overall pick in the 2015 draft. Although Randall played safety in college, the Packers shifted him to cornerback as soon as he arrived in training camp.

Randall spent three seasons in Green Bay with mixed results. He intercepted 10 passes during his tenure with the Packers and returned two of them for touchdowns.

At times, he seemed like a big play corner but at other times, he was inconsistent and beaten badly on pass plays.

New Packers GM Brian Gutekunst traded Randall to the Browns for backup quarterback DeShone Kizer. Randall was immediately shifted back to safety by the Browns and the level of play increased. He intercepted four passes in his first season with Cleveland.

After two years with the Browns, Randall signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Randall’s skill set was better suited to playing safety. The Packers attempt to change him to cornerback unquestionably impeded his progress in Green Bay.

I guarantee the Ravens move up and get either Murray or Queen you see Gute the Ravens value the inside linebacker position unlike you , so watch how the big boys work a draft while your trying to sell us how bad the cap situation is. Gutey is in way over his head right now.

The cap is definitely an issue for the Packers right now, especially because Bakhtiari and Clark need new deals after 2020. Yes, Pettine doesn't emphasize ILB as much in his system, but I think the Packers will add another ILB in the draft, just not very likely in the first or second rounds. Thanks for the comment.

Gotcha. Thanks for commenting. As for Gute, he turned a 6-9-1 team around and got them to the NFC Championship Game one year later. Had a big year in free agency last year but less money to spend this year. Let's see how the draft goes.

Actually just being honest , Ravens And Steelers are two teams that are linebacker draft heavy Gute could have gotten Kwitakowski even Shobert in free agency, but instead we got a question mark , why doesn’t anyone seem to understand the Packers did not go to the Super Bowl because they could not stop the run , expect more of the same this season. I love the smiths but does anyone else think they could have been had fir a little less?

They won't need to deal up because one of Murray, Queen, or Jeremy Chinn (a fast riser the Ravens have been linked to) will be there.

Let's be honest with ourselves, folks: there was no game-changer available at ILB in this FA market. NONE. Not Kwiatkoski, not Martinez, not Schobert, and not Kirksey. These are all shades of the same player. None puts together run-stopping, pass coverage, instincts, or sideline-to-sideline speed in the way people here want out of ILB. None of these guys is Ryan Shazier or Luke Kuechly. LIttleton isn't even going to be playing inside for the Raiders (who play a 4-3). He's going to be a WLB where he can run and hit and not have to take on IOL where he would get washed out play after play.

Expectations for how the Packers were going to fill ILB through FA were way overblown. Maybe it's because they were so successful last year. But they not only didn't have the cap space to do that (without leaving way too many other holes) but the kind of player everyone wanted them to sign just wasn't there.

Well said, Dobber and I agree 100 percent. There was no game-changing ILB in free agency and you don't want to overpay for a pretty good player and pay him like an elite player. We'll see who's available early in the draft and if Gutekunst chooses to address the position in the first round. Thanks for the comment.

Okay, so I get it, you don't like Gute and don't think much of the work he's done in GB since being named GM in spite of having one of the highest priced QB's in the NFL. I mean you have to admit, last years FA signings were pretty F'ing great overall. Maybe not all home runs but overall some dame fine work.

All one had to do is LOOK at the cap space the Packers had at the start of FA and they'd know Gute wasn't selling them a line of BS...He DIDN'T have the space to do what he did last season in FA. But what he's done this year is solid, solid work preparing the Packers for the 2020 draft with his signings. He's opened up the draft IMO to select the player who helps them WIN NOW the most....Again just my opinion. But I have a question...

...What in the hell does cap space have to do with whether the Ravens move up in the draft or not to take Queen or Murry and why is Gute over his head. I think you've clearly forgot the mess Thompson left the Packers in when he no longer was the GM of the Packers.

Go back and take a look at Thompsons last few drafts and the state of the team the day Gute was named GM. Once you look honestly then tell me he's in over his head.

Moving Taylor bumps the CAP up 4 M. There is still room to maneuver for Gutey. There will be veteran cut downs, post-draft. Lot of scenarios. This draft will define him. Can he get a couple of big play guys to help move the Meat Packers into the Big Game?

Yeah, the Ravens value ILB so much that when they had a Pro Bowl ILB, CJ Mosely they allowed him to leave in FA rather than pay him top dollar. Wait didn't the Packer just do that w/ Martinez? Oh I guess they did!

Whether the ILB position is devalued more in GB, it doesn't justify allowing it to be such an open sore for the defense. Either you increase the value or you make sure the scheme can absorb its pains. The Packers have done neither.

Some will believe that Kirksey is an increase in value due to his better pass coverage but if the scheme that Martinez spoke about recently remains as is then the odds of Kirksey being different but same, the result odds are in favor of the pains remaining in place.

That is an issue with Mike Pettine's defensive priorities. I understand the frustration with it because when your defense can't stop the run, it's a slow death so to speak as the other team beats you 5 yards at a time. The hope is that the Packers defense improves in this area next season. We have to see what the draft brings.

I understand Pettine likes to use a lot of DBs, but both of the top ILB prospects are quite fast, unlike some of the players the Packers have used at this position in the past. Murray is more experienced, supposedly a better tackler, and has a chance to be a real impact player. If the Packers are unable to land him, I hope they at least draft someone who has some speed and not a lumbering dinosaur.

No ILB is going to be very successful unless the DL actually play w/ gap integrity. The DL in front of Matinez didn't play w/ gap discipline they were actually allow to basically rush the QB on every down. They only played the run on their way to the QB. The DL did whatever they wanted and Martinez was forced to try to clean up when the RB broke past the DL. Martinez wasn't the only one w/ no gap responsiblities, it included the entire DL and OLB as well. No ILB is going to be successful unless the Packers entire front 7 plays w/ gap discipline.

The Rex Ryan/Pettine defense is all about disruption in the backfield and the QB specifically. Gap responsibilities are basically a non factor.

There is a much bigger emphasis on pressuring the quarterback in the Pettine defense than there is on stopping the run. It does hurt the run defense and it didn't play to Martinez's strengths. That's one reason Blake headed elsewhere. I hope he is a better fit in NY for his sake. The Packers are hoping Kirksey, who has a bit more speed than Martinez, is a better fit in this defense for what the Packers ask their ILBs to do. We will see who they add in the draft. Thanks for commenting.

I’m not so sure about some of the assumptions.

From a vastly improved defense last year, we’ve lost our primary ILB and essentially our #4 edge guy. The other 19 guys on our gameday roster are still available, including Tramon. We’ve added Kirksey to help offset the loss of Martinez.

And now we have the draft. IMO, we have an opportunity to improve this defense considerably with three picks in the Top 100. Our gameday roster should be actually better than last year’s defense.

"we have an opportunity to improve this defense considerably with three picks in the Top 100. Our game day roster should be actually better than last year’s defense."

This goes against what I read here often. That draft picks should not be expected to contribute in the first year. You now expect 'THREE' to turn the defense around.

I at least only highly expect the 1st round selection to contribute, especially the one selected in the top 15. The failure of Gary to do such has been excused by many for whatever reason conjured up to appease themselves, but now three lower selections are expected to make a difference.

They faced the Lions and K.C. without their starting QB. They played against rookies in the Giants, and Washington games, Kyle Allen with Carolina and the Trubitsky factor came into play twice. Fact is the Raiders, Denver, Lions, 49rs(twice), Vikes, gouged them with the running game. I still do not believe Pettine is LaFluer's guy. We will see how it plays out, Old School, but they need another ILB in tandem with Kirksey. A hybrid LB is an invitation to disaster.

Ya Taryn, you're thinking again as usual. In my opinion, the only way they shouldn't take ILB at #1, is if the position is already 3 gone in the first round.

I also think Kenny Clark should be allowed to walk, and GB needs to find new 3-4 DL help. This isn't rocket science, anybody believing the 49ers championship dominance was an outlier, is missing it! The DL and ILB positions are weak, thus GB is weak. If they went DL I wouldn't even be disappointed.

Has to be one of those 2 positions, and if it isn't this team is going to get exposed for 16 games. It all starts in the trenches and with great ILB play.

There is another possibility here, perhaps Blake Martinez "Didn't get it", got trapped a lot, and dominated around the LOS when it matter. Despite him being a tackling machine, most of that action occurred down field.

We need ILB badly, and we need DL badly.

Agree DL and ILB are needs, but why would you let Clark, our best DL who is only 25 this season, walk? Without Clark, the DL has no special talents or elite players. I'd rather see them ink Clark to an extension which can lower his 2020 cap hit if they structure it right and then add some talent in the draft to help fortify the position. Thanks for the comment.

IDL is also a position of need. We need to stop the run or it will be the NFCCG all over again. We also need OL help and specifically help at RT and RG. We had better also look at a speedy WR ,as the WR position is stacked this year, but all the speedy guys will be off the Board unless we pick one with one of our first two picks. I'm thinking Gute moves down to get more picks in the early 2nd or 3rd rounds where we have only one pick in each of those rounds now.

K. Davis ? rd. 4! I also believe they will not pick a OL. (Gutey will roll the dice .). This draft will come to him if he stays put. I'd hate to lose Reagor or Higgins like TT lost Watt.

The Packers didn't attempt to change Randall into a CB. At ASU he was called a Safety, but in essence he was the #1 CB on the team and played man coverage well over 80% of the time. He was a Safety in name only, his film showed that he was a CB at ASU and he also played CB in Jr College before transferring to ASU. For some reason at ASU at the time, they called the #1 CB a Safety (probably because he was used in many diffferent spots). Randall himself said that at ASU he was the best CB on the roster and played man coverage w/ no deep help. It's a complete misnomer that Randall was a Safety at ASU. He was the best CB on that team.

But I get it... Its too hard to actually dig up the facts than it is to say the Packers changed his position.

Safeties are often given responsibility to cover the slot receiver. Randall had CB skills and used them at ASU. I wouldn't say it was wrong to label him as a safety at ASU, though.

In any event, Randall was a better CB than King has been. As a safety, he was probably as good as HHCD (both are playing for similar money in 2020). I always thought that the player who was babied by the Pack was the golden child, HHCD.

Bahk is gone next year. He's regressing. You guys can be loyal and in denial all you want. But his salary is the problem. I sincerely hope Jones is there. Just to watch some bitch how he can't play LT.(Well Yes he can! ) The packers have taken OTs and Dts with so many problems. And as long as we have 1 year of service with Bahk and Linsley remaining. , Gutey truthfully shouldn't draft any @30. Baptism by Fire is the Fix. You guys all bitched about the Wr position all year last year. Yet you still want a ILB, doubting Gutes moves. ILB is back-up only now. It can be filled later. ( It won't take Murray or Queen.) Gutey biggest mistake was not doing enough with the DL in Free Agency. Here again, Gutey blew guys that were affordable for depth. Guilty! And with guys ready to walk next year, the criticism is justified. So what is Guteys Type? A player not Needed? Or a player thats a game changer. If Gutey does not take Wr @ 30. I can only say, the bitching in Green Bay won't stop.

David Bakhtiari is coming up on 30 years old and just may be looking for more money than the Packers are willing to give on a THIRD extension. About that 3rd extension...I don't recall to many of those being handed out to O-Linemen that last several years in GB.

Watch some tape.....no instincts, runs around action because he can’t shed. Was not asked to cover except in loose zone. I’d trade out...move down and go for the better Notre Dame TE and OL in the second. Or......I’d go OL if I couldn’t find a deal to move out of the first if one of them is there.

Picking at #30 definitely has produced very "meh" results. I wasn't crazy with the Ross Verba pick in '97 and was totally caught offguard about the Damarius Randall pick in 2015.

Draft pundits said "Ted Thompson is picking the best safety in this draft." Then, we make him play corner. That's what I hated about that pick: if a player is evaluated at one position, but then you play him out of position, THEN YOU CAN'T EVALUATE HIM THE SAME WAY.

As if reaching for Randall and then playing him out of position wasn't enough, trading away Randall for DeShon Kizer made me puke even more. What a shit show that was. I'm glad it's behind us now and Gute has patched up the safety position.

However, does anyone feel like CB could be a dark horse 1st rd pick for us? Think about it: Kevin King, while finally improving, will be in a contract year and has been injury prone, Josh Jackson -- barring some incredible comeback in 2020 -- has been a bust, and beyond that, it's Chandon Sullivan and Ka'dar Hollman. Of course there's Jaire Alexander, but he's about the only constant we have at this time.

Never rule out CB. High attrition position, you always need lots of DB active on game day, and the Packers currently have an unfilled hole (TWill), questionable depth (Jackson, Hollman, Ento), and a starter who may not be resigned after 2020 (King). I would argue they almost HAVE to pick a CB in the first 4 rounds of this draft.

"The Packers didn't attempt to change Randall into a CB. Randall himself said that at ASU he was the best CB on the roster and played man coverage w/ no deep help."

He was called a Safety by ASU but he PLAYED CB, make no mistake about it. There were some scouts that thought he might be a better Safety than CB. The consensus was close to a 50/50 split to be honest. Being a CB is valued much more than Safety, the Packers tried him at CB first. He didn't stick in GB long enough to know if they might have eventually moved him to Safety. Not a surprise that another team tried him at Safety.

The Randall pick was the pinnacle Senile Ted selection. Picked him way higher than he should have (along with Rollins) and then played him at the wrong position. I'm still baffled to this day.

That was a GM move. TT let Williams go. Williams didn't want to play safety at that time either. And he had a shoulder injury. TT went cheap. He reached for RANDALL and there were better players. AS IT TURNED OUT, THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD TURN ANYBODY IN SHIELDS.

He was a disappointment, no doubt. You weren't the only one baffled by it. Thanks for the comment.

So I just have to say for those liking Reagor and Hamler....not gonna happen.....

Gute has added the following Pass catchers during his tenure. Jimmy Graham 6'7", Bob Tonyan, 6'5", Marcedes Lewis, 6'6", Jace Sternberger 6'4", J'Mon Moore 6'3", MVS 6'4", Equinemious St. Brown 6'5", Jake Kumerow 6'4", Allen Lazard 6'5", Devin Funchess 6'5" does anyone see a trend??

He definitely has a preference for taller, bigger receivers. I could see him adding a smaller receiver later in the draft to give the team a different skill set, but if the Pack chooses a receiver early, I agree a smaller player is unlikely. Thanks for commenting.

That use to be the Norm with Cbs too. Alexander changed that.

They also retained 5'11" Darrius Shepherd out of camp last year, signed 6'0" Ryan Grant midseason, and brought in 6'0" Reggie Begelton this offseason.

True, Darrius Sheperd was shown the door quickly after Detroit and replaced by Lazard. Ryan Grant was never active for 0 snaps and 0 catches. For now Begelton is a camp body.

Take out Claypool and move the next 4 up. Their a round late in most projections I've seen. You Need more Wrs. later in the draft. You must have a lot of faith in MVS,St.Brown, Lazard, Kumerow. I don't think Gute would have signed Funchess if he was happy with them.
