Packers Select Edgerrin Cooper in 2024 NFL Draft - Round 2

Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M, Linebacker

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

At 6'2", 230 lbs, Cooper ran a 4.51 40. His overall RAS was 9.34. with a shuttle time of 4.29 and a 10-yard split of 1.54.

CAREER NOTES:

A four-star prospect from Covington, Louisiana, he was a two-year starter for the Aggies. An AP first-team All-American in 2023, he totaled 84 tackles, eight sacks, 10 QB hurries, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Breakout 2023 season at Texas A&M, leading the SEC in tackles for loss. One of two consensus top linebackers in this draft class. Likely will play WILL. New Packers DC Jeff Hafley prizes active linebackers who can rush the passer, and Cooper fits the bill.He has speed, is athletic with an overall RAS of 9.34. Cooper is not known for his coverage skills. His speed gives him strong, side-to-side ability to chase down runners, while he can shoot gaps in pass rush. Per the CHTV draft guide, he will need work taking on blocks from NFL level. competition. He could get washed out of plays when engaged by big blockers. His speed wont help him shed those as much at the next level.

COMMENTARY:

The Packers traded back four spots with the Saints and still got the linebacker they wanted. It's an interesting choice, with many consensus boards ranking Junior Colson of Michigan higher, though he played the end of the season with a broken hand that has not fully  healed. But Colson offered the Packers the option of locking down the MIKE linebacker position, to which Quay Walker is ill-suited. So it seems Green Bay may be satisfied with Isaiah McDuffie at MIKE, after seeing him play the role when De'Vondre Campbell couldn't. It will be interesting to see the rotation when the Packers are in the increasingly common 4-2-5 defense.

I know you wanted this. Me too. I took him at #41 in simulations almost by default.

If we're really going to play 4-3, we need more than 2 LBs, which is what we had until now.

Amegadjie at #58?

Wow, I agree with Leatherhead on something. One of us has changed during my extended absence. Or we're into blind squirrel odds territory.

Love the Edgerrin Cooper pick. He was my top LB choice for much of the draft season. Going down the board a bit, picking up another 5 & 6, and still getting him was brilliant.

Of course, it was written in the stars that Gute would be attracted to an uber-athletic defensive prospect with tackling inconsistencies. Any chance we can trade Gutt for Howie Roseman?

Love this pick. To pair him with Quay and McKinney backing them up is REALLY going to tighten up the middle of the field. When was the last time you could say that about a Packers defense?

Lets GO!!!!

Arguably the best off-ball LB in the draft.

...and added more capital in he process.

out a lot with concussions.
Likes to run around people.
Would not have fallen if he was #66
Still better than McDuff.

Friggin Igles! As soon as they traded up right before Packers, I knew. As soon as they traded up, Packers knew. Packers traded out.
Fuugles took Cooper DeJean. Fuuuudddggge.

Then 4 CB's in a row went off. Packers didn't want a CB, but DeJean is a Safety/nickel slot, not CB.

I think Edgerrin would've been there at 58. No LB went in between. They traded out right after the Eagles moved up. I don't think coincidence. Once Cooper gone, they needed to make sure they got Edge Coop at that point in case another team moved up. Packers will try to convince us otherwise, I won't believe it. Gute rolled the dice at #41, craps.

I do love the pick. I had Edgerrin Cooper all day for Packer in 2nd, but not at #41, at #58 where they could have got him. Just frustrating, they could have had both Coop's. They did get more draft capital, so there's that.

[Edit] Yep, and now got Bullard, the 2nd best Safety after DeJean.

OK Cooper Dejean skipped the combine but did run at a second Iowa workout and ran 4.43 ... better than pedestrian.
Darnel Savage 4.30
Eric Stokes 4.25

I wanted Edgerrin in the 2nd but watching the Eagles trade up ahead of us to take DeJean was a little painful I must admit. I saw it coming and when I saw it was the Eagles I knew who it was for. Well played. They did trade 50 and 53 and 161 for pick 40 and 78, seems a little steep but probably worth it if he turns out to be as good as I think he will be.

Don't know if the Packers tried to trade up at all for him, I assume they explored it and maybe got outbid.

I am a little surprised at some of the negative reaction to this pick? He appears to be a sensational athlete with strengths in getting behind the LOS fast. I was SO SICK of Joe Barry's passive defense in this regard. Yes, I am concerned about him not taking on big blockers which could mean issues stopping the run - also as per the Barry defense? But I can't wait to see what how he does under Campanil's tutelage and Hafley's defensive schemes!
