Packers Vs. Chargers - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live.

C'mon Man! - Someone, anyone, please explain to me how legislating and penalizing a barely visible twitch from a wide receiver makes the game of football better, safer or "more just?" There's a plethora of things the league could do to make the game better, but this isn't one of them. Let them play the game! Also, the defensive back makes the call for the ref here, who obliges.

Way Too Safe - I'm not highlighting this play to emphasize the horrendous attempted tackle by Jonathan Owens. You've seen it with your own eyes and you don't need me to point it out. I do want to look at what happens before the tackle attempt and the reasons it plays out that way. First of all, Owens lines up 15 yards off the LOS at the snap - not unusual for a safety. But as the ball is snapped, he drops another 10 yards. Now, if Owens had a couple of receivers bearing down on him, that would be understandable. But he doesn't. He has but one receiver way in front of him to worry about, yet still maintains a 12 yard cushion. Note, this is on a THIRD and 3!!!. Why not close the gap a bit - if it makes you happy, you can still maintain a five yard cushion in case the receiver turns it upfield. If Owens had done that, he could have arrived at the receiver before said receiver had the opportunity to turn and face him straight on in the open field. Owens is a good tackler in the box, but agility in the open field is not a tool in his toolbox. Yes, of course, he got his hands on the receiver so he should be able to make the tackle, but it was a lot more difficult than it had to be. Personally, going low for his legs would have been a better choice, but that could just be hindsight. The dropping so deep when not threatened - that could be what Barry wants, or it could be Owens not being confident in coverage, but whatever it is, it's the main reason the Chargers end up with a touchdown on third and 3.

Faked Out -  In a previous "Three Plays..." I highlighted how poor the Packers were at executing fake handoffs, with the result being opposing players pretty much ignoring the fake and swarming to where they know the ball was actually headed. Well here you have the perfect example of what a good fake handoff does. In fact, I'd call it the primary reason this play works. Sure, they got some great blocking downfield to turn it into a touchdown, but even without that, this would have at least been a big gain because of how the Chargers bought the fake. Look at the Chargers players all with eyes on Aaron Jones as he runs into the line. The fake hold six Chargers looking towards Jones as Reed sprints around them all. The critical one was the OLB #45, who if not totally buying the fake, likely would have had Reed cold in the backfield. Just perfect execution.

AL 3 excellent play choices.

#1 should never be a penalty. That is terrible officiating.

#2 - That play by Owens deserving a benching. Either that or if it is because of Barry's scheme Barry should be long gone. Whatever the reason it is inexcusable defense at the NFL level.

#3 - As Mike Holmgren once told me; "amateurs focus on plays calls, professionals focus on the execution." Perfect execution by the Packers especially the play fake results in a TD. The Packers are improving but they need to execute their plays just like in your example much more often.

Good job. Thanks, Since '61

If they benched Owens, Carlson would have been the next S, as everyone else is injured. Just read that AJ had a MCL sprain and will miss a couple of games.

You mean Benny Sapp? I could live with a drive or two with him getting his feet wet.

Don't know anything about him, Savage might be back.

Sapp, 4.62 40. Plays hungry. 4.4 RAS. 5'11" 200#.

AJJ - was he on the field?

Leavitt - keep him on ST and not D, please.

#39 Anderson - I know nothing about him, I don't know if he's even an option on D or is exclusive to ST.

In Gutey we trust, to axe both Tarvarious Moore, Rasul Douglas, and 4 more DBs with 4.4 speed.

#38 Inness Gaines was originally S, they've converted him into a backup slot corner. 4.46 40 time. Might want to bring him back to S?

Don't have to worry about Leavitt, they cut him to sign Patrick Taylor. After that bonehead second penalty for arguing with the ref, I suspect that made him an easy target for the FO.

I saw that play call live, and it's ridiculous.

I also saw Owens miss more than just this, and on scoring plays. While we're thin at the position, where's Tarvarious Moore? Gutey sent him to the Bills to get 3 turnovers a game too?

-- Can't even fart anymore.
-- I guess Owens thought they were playing two hand touch. We need to sign a veteran or draft a S. This has been a serious deficiency for a long time. We have such a great history with great safeties, just don't put your drink down with one of them around.
-- Musgrave also had a good block on the play. I take back some of the ribbing I gave him because lately he has been sticking his body in there. Also, am very pleased with most of our WR making good attempts at blocking , especially Watson. I have noticed many QBs just faking the fakes.

#1 - I don't believe the official would have thrown that flag if not for the defender pointing like someone just stole his lunch money. Better discretion is needed. That is pure overreaction by the ref.

#2 - Fear permeates through this team by coaching malpractice.

#3 - Thankfully Chargers D is slightly worse than the Packers.

Thanks, Moo. The #2 point is very palpable on both sides of the ball. MLF went into his contrition routine, yapping about the conservative play calls trying to kill clock in lieu of playing for the 1st down to keep the ball away from Herbert at the end of the 4th quarter. Enough of this. Play to Win.

It's almost as if he gets so happy and full of himself when things go right he forgets we have to secure the win!

Between that and AR12 choking in big moments, it contributed to sputtering in the playoffs. And other factors since 2010 ...

I know. It reminds me of those times, and yes even back to 2010.

Play 1: Woe is me for having to repeat this monotony, but from the NFL Rulebook: Rule 7, Section 4, Article 2: False Start.

"...prior to the snap, an offensive player has assumed a set position changes or moves in such a way to simulate the start of a play, blah, blah,...Any quick abrupt movement by a single offensive player...which simulates the start of a snap, is a false start."

All I see is Watson twitching his index finger and doing a barely noticeable knee bend. There's certainly nothing quick or abrupt about it. The official just got talked into one here.

Play 3: The broadcaster correctly notes the outstanding work of Heath, who occupies two defenders while Reed scoots into the end zone.

While probably the worst, it wasn’t the only tacky movement call. Those officials were on a hair trigger.

PFF dinged Heath hard for being overpowered on a block by an OL. Just illustrates how rating providers lose the woods for the trees. Now, if we could just get him playing as aggressively up to and through the catch again, we might appreciate him even more.

SP,

I think that's exactly it. In this situation refs have stopped calling the play, and respond to whoever points their finger the most indignantly.

Is this basketball?

Play One - Fire the Ref
Play Two- Thanks for focusing on the depth.
I thought his feet got tangled.
And tried to make up for a bad angle.
Play Three - was Luck more than execution.
But it all looks the same in the box score.

The end around was perfect execution. There was no penetration with Rhyan holding position. Once the OLB reads the run, his feet change position and the TE controls the edge.

Samuel #26 came across on a bad angle
and nearly colluded w/45. (Faked out or bad Position ? )
#26 Had to pull up.

He got himself stuck in no man’s land. Weight on his heels. Had no chance once that happened. Looks like he lacked the confidence to just drive through the ball carrier, fearing being juked.

True most long runs usually entail some poor angels by tacklers. You probably found fault with the Ice Bowl QB sneak. Couldn't resist, Stock peace Y. LOl

After watching the highlights of the game and seeing Owen's missing that tackle, my first thought was cut him. Of course, the Packers kept him.

Look who Gutey cut: 4 DBs with 4.4 speed, + Tarvarious Moore at 4.32. And then Rasul Douglas.

They have to keep Owens. There's a Simone Biles watch on and they're already losing ground to Taylor Swift.
