Packers Vs. Vikings - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live.

The last time I did one of these posts (post-Bucs game), it was called "3 Plays That Make You Go F*%#%$^*!"  What a difference a couple of weeks makes.

What a Stiff! - Tucker Kraft is no stiff - unless you're referring to this play from Sunday night. I wrote almost two months ago on how the Packers tight ends need to learn to use as stiff arm after the catch, especially on those out routes. At the time, it was mostly directed at Luke Musgrave, who was too easily letting tacklers into his legs to take him down without much YAC. It later applied to Kraft when he decided he was a hurdler and was risking injury to his man parts. Kraft obviously got the memo and not only does he execute a stiff arm here, he destroys the poor defensive back who bounces off the ground like it was a trampoline. That guy's neck and gluteus maximus is going to be sore for a good while.

The Love Shove - I have several points to make about this play. First of all, why are Aaron Jones and Bo Melton your two "shove" guys? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to use some beefier guys in that role? AJ Dillon and his quads makes the most sense to me. Someone on twitter pointed out that maybe they didn't use him because of his thumb injury. If that's the reason, ok, but how about someone else? Secondly, Josh Meyers is not Jason Kelce, who has perfected the technique necessary to make this play automatic, which it is for the Eagles. Finally, I actually think Loves gets the first down, but they blow the whistle too soon.

Fumble assist - If there were such a stat as a fumble recovery assist, Kenny Clark would get one here. Look closely and you'll see that with the ball out of his reach, Clark does the next best thing - he grabs the Vikings player closest to the ball, who looks like they are about to fall on the ball, and pulls him away. That allows Brooks to secure the fumble. Clark gets a "fumble recovery assist."

The real play of the game was the Vikings coach putting in the wrong QB. I thought he put hi in so he would run. The packloses whena QB is a big runner. Sadly I predict that Justin Fields will beat the Pack next weekunless they can contain and tackle him. I remeber when Kapernik smoked us fpor 190 yards. Teh playof the day was the Vikings Cpoachjes dumb idea to use a rookie andnot tell him to run wild,

The coacha nd the QB for the Vikes , Losers and idiots. Watching the Packetrs lose to the Giants with a QB who all he did was run wild all night. Then he got sacked later imn other games. The sad key is that Justin Fields will run wild and I and all Packer fans will be crying in our beer. Another year down the drain. I suggest they put Watson or another fast receiver as a spy on defense whose only job will be to track and tackle Fields. That is thekey to winnning.

The failed punt return, which put Minnesota first and goal and resulted in a TD, is the ultimate play that makes me go Hmmmmm. Signal fair catch, catch, and get the bottom of the roster off the field and put the Packer offense on the field. How many turnovers, near turnovers, penalties, and injuries have we incurred this season trying to get an extra 8.0 yards of field position?

I think Toure may be going on permanent tour with plays like that. Geez!

That was a boneheaded attempt. In a close contest that could lose the game. Maybe he was trying to make a play to get some notice but football also requires discipline. The blocking on his attempt was not good either. Just fair catch the ball. What is going on with STs this year?

The WR room is suddenly loaded with young talent with Reed, Wicks, Watson, Melton, and Heath making plays. If Toure cannot be trusted on STs, he won't be seeing the field much next season. I see he's on IR now to end his season.

I’ve watched Samori’s interviews and he’s great guy. I feel sorry for him. He’s obviously not shown what it takes. Good luck to him cause he obviously won’t be a Packer in 2024

Surprisingly, Montgomery is still hanging around the league. He cracked the Patriots 53 this season. Since released, but he not yet be gone for good.

Play 1: My, how Kraft has grown; that's the way to do it! The stiff arm is one of the few instances where you can legally abuse a guy's face like that.

Play 2: The Love Shove has worked a couple of times, but it seems to be an iffy proposition at best with some of our personnel right now. Kelce has said the Eagles practice the play quite a bit from a technical perspective, so I'm sure that helps. He also said that they successfully converted 36 of 38 quarterback sneaks before they started doing the Shove, and he credited his OL coach for making it a point of emphasis.

The Love Shove has worked every time they've done it, save for this time. Including two that were overturned by penalties. I think they're 3/4 on the year now? 5/6 if you include them penalties. They did one last week that was more of a sneak and I saw both guards bend to the inside so their guy blows by the QB and they fall, essentially into Love, while pushing him forward. It was a thing of beauty

That was a good catch on the fumble recovery assist, Al. Clark is a smart player.

Kenny was not in the stat line much except for a few penalties. But he played a good game overall...creating pressure. He flourishes in pressure packages.

Packers mostly rush the passer with just 4. I believe they have the talent to bring 5+ more frequently.

Kenny would benefit from it.

I see the PFF grades each week, and they're comical. They had Clark as 4th worst Packer on defense Sunday. Clark dominated in my opinion.

PFF hit Clark hard for the two penalties. They tend to do that. One has to evaluate the score in that light. Otherwise he graded pretty well with 9 pressures credited.

Great observation on Kraft. He is developing into that "chain-moving" tight end that has tormented the Packers for years.

The sequence that caught my attention was AJones 25 yard run that jump started a gorgeous, methodical, grinding, soul stealing 8 minute TD drive that essentially ended the game. That drive was just beautiful to watch. More of those please!

Play #2. I just didn't like the call.
I would have given it to Dillion.
Either he's a short yardage back.
Or we need to find one.
With all the stats now.
Someone surely is out there.

It’s as much an attempt to get around the issues blocking with Myers and Runyon on as anything I suspect.

Thank you for highlighting that absolutely devastating stiff arm by Kraft. A thing of sheer brutal beauty. But as for the "Love shove", I really dislike that play. Especially since it just seems like the QB could get hurt by getting shoved into a clawing, grasping mass of humanity. I remember when assisting a player was a penalty. One of the most famous pictures in the Packers illustrious history was Starr sneaking the ball into the end zone against the Cowboys in the 1967 Ice Bowl. And right behind him, looking like he was signaling "touchdown" was Chuck Mercein. He said he did that to make it very clear that he was not assisting Starr into the end zone. Reinstate the "no push" rule.

Absolutely on the sneak with Starr. I attended a Packer fantasy camp 30 years ago and Bart made just that point. I have that picture signed by the Packers from that game. And I inadvertently had Jim Taylor sign that. He should have been there.

Yeah, the pushing has become ridiculous. It doesn't look like football to me. Unfortunately at this point it may take a serious head or neck injury to bring the "no push" rule back.

I've been waiting for a Packer player to use a stiff arm like THAT for a long time. Probably Dorsey Levins. If I had to pick one play that reminded me of the old days and what I want most to see from our players that is up there! Packer football!

On one of Jonesy's many productive runs, Jenkins blocked two guys to plow the road for AJ who streaked for long first down. That was just good, old time football. Block to the whistle. Run to daylight.

Preston Smith is having a very nice season, but please.. please, Preston... Celebrate AFTER the play is blown dead.

It drove me absolutely nuts that Preston KNOWS he got a strip sack, but decided in the moment to run towards the sideline and celebrate instead of immediately locating the ball and assisting in its recovery.

He actually looks back after his flex/spin celebration, sees that players are scrambling around on the ground for the loose ball, and decided to continue his celebration towards the sideline with his back to loose ball.

ugh!

Three good choices, especially the last one with Clark.

I like Kraft. He always falls forward to make positive yardage. That is long time coming. Love and LaFluer are using Kraft to gain positive yardage and the makes the first first down easier and gets the offense into a rhythm. Which is important at the beginning of the game and the first possession of the second half. This is one of the things LaFluer is learning and makes the offense hard to stop.

I thought that the Love shove was too far away. Notice they didn't use it again.

This Viking game shows just how dangerous the Packers can be if they are playing complementary football. The offense is now very consistent and hard to stop. They have progressed well and I believe that Lafluer has done well. Sometimes it take a while.

The defense has no consistency. Which one will show up against the Bears. I hope the one that played against the Vikings shows up. It would be great that the defense leads the team into the playoffs. Love will do his job of scoring enough point to win.

Go Pack

While the stiff arm of a ball carrier to a defender to the face mask is legal the runners need to use it. Actually this practice should be made illegal. Why can a ball carrier grab a face mask and not the defender.

Also I have thought about ball carriers jumping over defenders. Yes it could cause an injury but also staying on the ground can cause injury. I often wondered which is safer. This last weekend one of the announcers mentioned that DBs tend to go low when tackling. If the ball carrier stays on the ground he is risking leg injuries.

I believe that grabbing and holding the face mask of a defender is illegal. Pushing it is not. And from what I have heard the reason many TE leap over defenders is that the smaller DB’s like to go for their legs which can cause injuries to the bigger TE’s.
