Post-Draft Packers Position Analysis: Running Backs

Today we look at a crowded running backs unit for a post-draft analysis.

We continue our position analysis here at Cheesehead TV with the running backs and fullbacks. Aaron Jones enjoyed a breakout 2019 season and Jamaal Williams shines as a pass-catching back. With both players entering contract years, the Packers drafted A.J. Dillon out of Boston College in the second round. And that’s not to say Dillon is necessarily replacing either or both Jones and Williams, but he does offer additional insurance long-term at the position. Plus, Matt LaFleur made it clear at the combine he’d like to add a third back to his rotation. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if the Packers kept five backs on the roster heading into the season, especially with Danny Vitale’s departure to New England. Now, onto the players themselves:

Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones enjoyed a breakout 2019 campaign in Matt LaFleur’s new offense. He started all 16 regular season games for the Packers for the first time in his career, compiling 1,084 yards on the ground with 16 touchdowns and another 474 yards receiving with three additional touchdowns through the air. He added onto that total during the playoffs with three more rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown, setting a franchise record with 23 total touchdowns in a season, surpassing the previous total of 22 held by Ahman Green.

Jones boasts a regular season average of 4.6 yards per carry, and he played 62% of snaps for Green Bay in 2019. He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns and all touchdowns this past season and also led the NFL in yards per rushing attempt in 2018 with 5.5. Jones enters a contract year in 2021, and while I’d expect the Packers to make a strong push at re-signing him, a 2020 season similar to 2019 could price him out of Green Bay’s market.

Jamaal Williams

I’ve been a huge fan of Williams since his draft selection. His numbers won’t jump off the page at you like Jones’ do, but he’s a serviceable, all-purpose back who’s a workhorse. He posted his lowest rushing total in 2019 with only one touchdown and 460 yards rushing, but he also played only 35% of snaps for Green Bay after playing 49% in 2018.

Where I especially like Williams is as a pass-catching back in LaFleur’s offense. Williams added 253 yards receiving to his 2019 totals with a whopping five touchdowns in addition to his lone rushing score. He also boasts a catch percentage of 86.7. Having both Jones and Williams entering contract seasons makes the 2021 offseason more difficult to navigate, as it’s hard to imagine both players returning to Green Bay. I don’t expect any trades or surprise moves this offseason and I think both guys will play for the Packers in 2020, but after this season, the dynamic duo might be no more, and to me, that’s a bummer.

A.J. Dillon

If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’m high on Dillon already. I’ve coveted him throughout the draft process and I think he’ll be a great bruiser back for LaFleur. Dillon is the true definition of a power back at 6-0, 247lbs. (For comparison’s sake, Jamaal Williams is 6-0, 213lbs.)

The second round draft selection makes it evident that Dillon will likely see his fair share of snaps in the future, as the Packers will have big plans for him beyond his rookie 2020 season. At Boston College, Dillon broke 1,000 yards rushing in each of his three seasons, tallying 38 total touchdowns and 4,382 total yards. He averaged 5.2 yards per attempt ranked first in the ACC in rushing yards in 2019 with 1,685.

Per Pro Football Focus, Dillon forced 81 missed tackles in 2019 and posted a career overall grade of 90.7 entering the draft. If you haven’t seen his highlights yet, I’d encourage you to check them out. He’s going to add a new layer to LaFleur’s offense.

Tyler Ervin

Swervin’ Ervin made his return to the Packers and brings security both to the return game and the backfield. As of now, we’ve only gotten slight glimpses into how Ervin can be utilized on offense, but those glimpses have been promising. His longest run in Green Bay came during the Divisional Round of the playoffs against Seattle when he had two rushes for 25 yards with an 18-yard long.

As a return specialist, Ervin immediately improved a unit that was on track to be the worst in NFL history. Yes, seriously. Ervin returned 11 punts for Green Bay for 106 yards, averaging 9.6 yards per return. On kick returns, he made 6 returns for 160 yards with a long of 45 yards, averaging 26.7 yards per attempt. As things stand going into the 2020 season, I’d consider Ervin almost a roster lock for his return prowess alone. And that doesn’t include the speed he can bring to LaFleur’s offense.

Dexter Williams

Dexter Williams had a preseason filled with potential that never amounted to much of anything in the regular season. The sixth-round pick in the 2019 draft only made five rushing attempts during the regular season, and when Jamaal Williams went down with an injury during the season, the Packers opted to promote Tra Carson from the practice squad rather than give those reps to Dexter.

This is going to be a big offseason for Williams to prove he deserves another shot at the roster, despite the room being more crowded than it’s seemed in recent memory. Williams exploded onto the scene in 2018 at Notre Dame, rushing for 995 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 6.3 yard average per carry, which likely factored into his draft selection. For most of the 2019 preseason he had to battle for reps with Tra Carson, and while I’d expect him to get some early looks as the camp favorite for a fifth roster spot, he’ll still have quite a few names to beat out in camp this year.

Damarea Crockett

Crockett played at Missouri for three seasons before signing with the Houston Texans in 2019 as an undrafted free agent. He joined the Packers practice squad in October and will enter camp after a collegiate career that saw him accumulate 2,252 rushing and 19 touchdowns in three seasons. Fittingly, Crockett already has a history scoring touchdowns at Lambeau Field, as he was with Houston during the first preseason game in 2019 and scored a goal-line touchdown in the second quarter

Patrick Taylor

The 6-2 Taylor might not look like a traditional running back, but check out his highlights and you’ll see a dynamic athlete. Taylor tallied 2,884 total rushing yards during his career at Memphis with a 5.4 yard average and 36 touchdowns. He had back-to-back seasons scoring over 10 touchdowns his sophomore and junior years before missing part of his senior season to injury. Lance Zierlein’s analysis of Taylor includes “built like a comic book hero” and what’s not to like? He also has kick-coverage experience which could help him latch onto the roster in some capacity, though he’d be a great practice squad candidate if he can’t quite crack the 53 out of training camp.

Jordan Jones (FB)

Jones joined the team shortly after the draft concluded. While listed as a fullback on the Packers official website, at Prairie View A&M he caught 28 passes for 497 yards and six touchdowns in 2019 as a tight end. The Packers might try him at H-Back in a similar role to the one third-round draft pick Josiah Deguara is expected to fill.

Elijah Wellman (FB)

Wellman was signed to a reserve/future contract in January. He began his career as an undrafted free agent with Washington. Wellman is another versatile option listed as both a tight end and fullback by West Virginia. Wellman didn’t record eye-popping stats at WVU, but he was a team captain and proved to be a willing blocker who made the most of any opportunity he had on the field.

Summary

As things stand right now, I would expect the starting four of Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, A.J. Dillon, and Tyler Ervin to lock up their respective spots. Depending on how many receivers and tight ends the Packers carry in 2020, an additional one or two spots could open up on the 53, especially if a versatile fullback emerges. Keep an eye out for Patrick Taylor. He seems to be an early UDFA darling amongst fans.

When I saw the Packers pick Dillon, my first thought was Jamaal Williams may have just become trade bait. I like Williams a lot and he is a very dependable #2 RB. He's done a lot of work to improve his game. I won't be a bit surprised if he is traded during the preseason, especially if Dillon shows what he's capable of.

You think someone will give something up for a career #2 or #3 RB? As Packers fans we have appreciated Williams as a player and good guy. Every team has guys like that. Being a blue collar team I know us Packer fans root for guys like him. Maybe a 7th?
Patrick Henry is an intriguing guy but he needs to improve to be someone that gets carries.
The Packers have % RB (Including Henry) that can do it all run, catch block.
I see Dillion having a chance to be better in the Pro's with the right team. He was BC offense and played against stacked boxes continuously. Can you imagine what AR can do with that?
The Packers are really changing up this roster. They have 5 Pass Catching RB weapons and possibly 3 Mismatch TE's. The days of empty sets with 5 WR are over. Look at the size of those WR on the roster. Lazard and Funchess can punish DBs. Yet all these Big Bruisers can catch he football at a high level.
Teams (like the Packers) that like to play with 5 or more DB's on the field are going to be challenged.
HAving AR in this offense is going to be incredible. If he gets with the program and stays healthy the Packs O is going to be tough to deal with. Keeping the ball out of the opponents hands, wearing down the D and taking over in the 4th Qtr to close out games.
That said we still have AR if comebacks are in order. IFFF it all comes together and we solidify the O-line......bring on SF

I think you meant Patrick Taylor in your post. I would ask many fans to go check out his highlights. His one stat that amazes me was that he scored a touchdown every 13.1 touches throughout his college career. That is insane.

Our offense is going to change. We are going to hopefully small ball our way down the field while punishing the opposing D. This should also have the added benefit of keeping our D fresh.

We are going to become a cold weather team rather than one meant for a dome.

Dexter Williams needs to impress MLF to keep a place on the roster on even on the PS. It was clear last year MLF was not happy with his understanding of the game and playbook. Dillon they say has better hands than it looks because he was not used in the passing game in Boston College. He is going to be fine with the Packers and if he really has good hands they will be multiple snaps with 2 RB. In BC he was running with 7-8 on the box and he still ran very well. I don´t doubt he will help the offense a lot.

Very obvious Dexter has all the physical talent in the world. Think he appears immature and possibly a hot dog. Things like trying to catch one handed passes dropping the pass when easily could have caught the ball with both hands. This was after he was already in LF's dog house.

Like to see him double down with very serious and focused approach to see what he is capable of. Might be his last chance in GB.

2 QB. Rodgers and Love.
6 WR Adams, Lazard, Funchess, MSV, ESB
4 TE. Lewis, Sternberger, Deguara, Looney
9 OL. Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Linsley, Turner, Wagner, Taylor, Light, xx, xx
4. RB. Jones, Williams, Dillon, xx
—————
That’s 25 offensive players on the 53 man roster . The three spots where I put xx are undetermined yet.

I doubt the Packers carry 6 WR unless one plays so well in camp it forces Gute to keep them. With a base 12 personnel look, most times there will only be 2 WRs on the field. Usually Adams/Lazard or Adams/Funchess. Funchess can block he will have an opportunity to throw some crack blocks in the run game. I think they carry Adams, Lazard, Funchess, MVS and EQ. And 4 TEs

I also wonder who your #6 WR is. With Deguara as a H-back, I'm not certain there is a #4 RB. I also think there will 10 on the O-line.

Here's what I see...

3 QB...Rodgers, Boyle and Love (Love will be inactive on game day most of the season.)
5 WR...Adams, Lazard, Funchess, ESB, xx (might be Kumerow)
4 TE...Lewis, Sternberger, DeGuara, Tonyan (Looney still a project?)
10 OL...Bahktiari, Jenkins, Linsley, Turner, Wagner, Taylor, Patrick, Runyan, Stepniak*, Hanson, xx* (* xx added if Stepniak has to spend 2020 on PUP)
3 RB...Jones,Dillon, xx (if not traded, J. Williams as the #2 RB)

Sternberger can play as a sixth WR as he can be lined up wide as Graham was. Boyle will be the #2 based upon his experience over Love. Boyle is in his last season in Green Bay.

Interesting....I dont think they traded up in the first round to get Love only to make him inactive on game day and have Tim Boyle active.....Carrying 3 QBs is a luxury, I really doubt Boyle makes the 53 at all

I put more faith in LaF paring back the playbook to give Love a chance to be successful--or at least serviceable--than MM showed. It seemed he had no interest in adjusting his offense to match what Hundley could do. I think roster economics and a desire to save face will mean they'll only carry 2 QBs.

An interesting article out there on that other Packers site about how many throws ARod leaves on the field--we all know that to be true. The article goes on to speculate whether this has led to LaF to want ARod's replacement sooner rather than later. You can do with that what you will, but a solid run game could support a young QB who plays within LaF's system and isn't asked to win games by himself.

I don’t see MVS missing the cut. He is our only speed merchant, has looked good at times and is only entering his third year.

I can see us keeping 2 HBacks. If a position is central a back up is needed. I saw someone suggest Tonyan, but that missed the point of an H back, who must be able to block both in line and in space. I doubt Looney makes the roster. He is, if anything, PS cover for Lewis this year.

5 receivers, 3 TEs, 2 HBacks and I can see 4 RBs

The fourth is our returner, so kind of a cheat. Jones, Dillon, Williams and Ervin. I think Williams can be used I. The passing game a lot better with a compliment like Dillon and I don’t think Jones opens up Dillon in the same types of way. If Jones is hurt, Williams could do well. There is potential in our other RBs too, but I think we can stash one on the PS. Ervin won’t get used a lot, but he does provide options and could do some of the work if Jones went down in game as well. He and Dillon particularly could be an interesting pairing.

2 QB agree with you
4 TE Lewis, Sternberger, Tonyan and Deguara
4 RB Jones J. Williams Dillon and Ervin. Taylor and one of the FB to PS
6 WR Adams, Lazard, Funches, MSV, EQB and Begelton
10 OL Bahk, Jenkins, Linsley, Turner, Wagner as starters. Runyan, Hunson,Patrick,Taylor locked adn 1 between Nijman Leglue, Light and Madison, The chances of Light and Madison are slim, Stepaniak will go to PUP and then IR for the season.

There is a chance that MLF wants ro use 2 RB and 2 TE set formations a lot in that case they might keep 5 RB been Taylor the fifth.

I dream already with passing plays having Jones, J.Williams, Deguara ans Sternberger on the field,

I love the AJ Dillon pick, this kid is a mack truck that run. Though, I do not see Williams as trade bait as he is a great 3rd down back, his pass protection alone is huge and he is a good receiver out of the Backfield. His workload will certainly dwindle and he will be gone after this season.

I like Jamaal as well. Not just as a player but as a person. Over come a lot!

I think many are overlooking Dexter 'a lot'! He is a sink or swim guy. If he focuses this guy is the real deal. Amazing talent! Very possible he cant get it together and crashes and burns. By seeing Jones success last year and likely big pay day in 2021 combined with Dillon's talent the competition might be the best thing for Dexter forcing him to play his best.

I can see Taylor replacing Williams. I had Taylor and Dillion in my earlier mocks. But I never had Dillion going two. Big body backs; are usually A flash, and get hurt. Turf toe or some other fool thing. Hopefully he's a Larry Csonka. But while we beat the drum for the rbs. The Lbs/ Wrs were needed more. I just don't get the priority here. We had two good runners. They let Vitale go. Then we draft his replacement? And Nobody thought GB would take a RB high. So what goes? Gute's head shakers just don't make sense at this Time.

Vitale was not a good blocker and couldn’t get on the field, through injury initially. They never put up a fight to keep him. He ended up on near min in NE.

What you are seeing is the replacement with what they think is an all round HB and moving on from one that was not. A half back that can’t block in line and in space as well as catch is not effective. As to the rest, it’s no secret what they are trying to do. It’s been outlined often enough. Welcome to the Shanahan offense: goodbye West Coast derivative.

How has that worked out for us in recent years. Somebody always goes down. This is very different. We have the potential to finally have solid depth here ,and not with fill ins and JAGs for a change. I love the balance and potential.

I am a huge Jamaal Williams fan. The guy does all the "little things" that allow the "big things" to happen. Need a block so Rodgers can complete a pass? Done. Need someone to catch a pass and run over someone to get a first down? No problem. Oh, Jones needs a block to spring him for a big gain? Say no more. Need someone to do the dirty work on special teams? I'd be obliged.

I believe the roster goes to 55 this year.

Though the roster limit will continue to be 53 for 2020, two players from the practice squad may be brought up to increase roster sizes to 55 on gameday, with those two players reverting back to the practice squad after gameday. Practice squads will also be increased in size from 10 players to 12 beginning this season.
Active gameday rosters will also grow from 46 to 48, provided one of those extra players activated is an offensive lineman.

You are correct. There is, however a catch in the additional players rule that is interesting. Yes you can bring 2 up each week, but you can only send a player back down twice before they are subject to waivers. So 48 players can be active on game day, but 2 might be weekly elevated PS squad players not on the 53.

It will be interesting to see how this works. Since any player can be poached from the practice squad at any time still I believe, I’m not sure how important the 2 non waiver returns are. It does not appear that a team has to send them back each week, just confirm that they remain designated. I am guessing it will likely work out being an extra O lineman on the roster or as a nominee elevated (2 PS players can be any position but only add 2 to to game day actives if one is O line) and one largely permanent additional player.

Agreed - they won't get someone as good. AJones if any team is willing to pay him will be gone. Sucks!! But it's not prudent to pay 12mil to a RB. Why people should stop asking WHY Dillon with the 62 pick. The why is obvious and calculated - will it pay off? most picks don't but we will see.
Silver Lining - If Ajones leaves maybe they resign Jamal. He is worth more than a min contract but will still be somewhat affordable. If he has a great 2020 he will be gone as well....

any FO that honestly tells any Silva type what they are going to do or not do on draft day should be cleared.

Teams go to extraordinary lengths to mask what they intend. After the draft, If they didn’t pull something of they wanted to, they are not going to come out and effectively say, well we got X but we really wanted Y because we have concerns about, in this case, our QB. Hey fans and owner, that QB, we gave you, we don’t really believe he can do it!

File this under absolutely meaningless. We likely will never know.
