The Curious Case of Ty Montgomery

Has the fourth year running back played his last game in a Packers uniform?

You saw it. I saw it. The whole football world saw it.

An inexcusable mistake after an incredibly boneheaded decision.

We all watched with horror as Ty Montgomery took the final kickoff in Sunday's thriller between the Packers and the Rams and proceeded to fumble away his team's chance for victory.

According to Michael Silver of NFL Media, there's an apparent backstory that leads up to that cataclysmic event. It involves play time, heated tempers and the starting quarterback.

From Silver:

"Aaron was hot," said one Packers coach. "And he had a right to be. He yelled, 'Take a f------ knee!' He was very, very mad."

In the eyes of many of Rodgers' teammates, his ire was justifiable. According to more than a half-dozen Packers players and coaches who witnessed it, Montgomery had thrown a tantrum of his own on Green Bay's previous offensive series, becoming noticeably enraged on the sideline after being removed from the game. At least one player believed there was carryover from that incident to Montgomery's decision to disregard his coaches' instruction and return the kickoff.

"They took him out (the previous drive) for a play and he slammed his helmet and threw a fit," one Packers player said. "Then (before the kickoff) they told him to take a knee, and he ran it out anyway. You know what that was? That was him saying, 'I'm gonna do me.' It's a f----- joke.

"I mean, what the f--- are you doing? We've got Aaron Rodgers, the best I've ever seen, and you're gonna take that risk? I mean, it's '12'! All you gotta do is give him the ball, and you know what's gonna happen."

You can bet Mike McCarthy's media availability later this afternoon will be an interesting one.

What a great day it was tailgating before the game. Then watching my beloved Packers going toe to toe with one of the best teams in the league as we baked in the Coliseum sun. As I settled in to watch what I knew was going to be another Rodgers come back with 2 minutes left, I ended up hanging my head in discust. Thanks Ty for being insubordinate, selfish and stupid. I hope we can trade him for something rather than just cutting him, but either way, I'm good with both options.

With Montgomery gone, MM will be forced to play Jones more.

Haven't we had enough of these resist and obstructionist people constantly causing chaos because they didn't get their way. Now Montgomery's doing it on an NFL team that requires ALL members being on the same page. His little temper tantrum just caused us a game in the win column and you can't just say "I'm sorry" and move on. This is borderline treason. Total defiance along with selfish stupidity. I don't want players like this on our team. We had another one last year in Martellious Bennett. Get em' out of here!! Out Out Out!! You're FIRED!!

Funny we never really saw Ty use his skills, and don't be surprised if does a whole lot better with the ravens. Don't get me wrong he needed to go, but claim he wasn't that good, I have 1 question when you touch the ball 3-7 times a game, what do expect? MM and AR love the 11 personal and even when we don't have the people to do it, we continue to try to do it. What's worse humbris or using taking what you have and adapt? Oh yeah how long was he wr again?

Yeah, if that truly happened it will at the very least mean the three man rotation at RB just became a two man rotation. It'll also mean that Trevor Davis is returning punts and KOs very soon. And it might mean that Monty just cut himself.

What a bummer.

You have to get rid of him for obeying the orders of a coach. Otherwise you don't know when he will do it again.
He'll he could have just sunk the season. No one player is that important.
We know Mike covets guys who can play multiple positions. They should find guys who can play one well.

I just read the story a little while ago.

Seriously WTF???

I get he is probably a passionate player. He probably is pissed for not getting more opportunities and in someways I agree with him.

But the minute you play for yourself, you no longer can be on the team.

If these reports are all true, Montgomery shouldn't be on the team anymore. Whether they trade him or release him, I would let him go.
IF, they kept him, I would bench him for the next few games.

I had the highest hopes for Monty, even predicting that he'd take the bull by the horns during Aaron Jones' suspension and become the dynamic do-it-all and move-all-over-the-place chess piece for GB. It didn't happen but his yards/carry was good. His pass pro improved. I thought things were slowly moving in the right direction and that maybe MM would figure it out.

No cigar. I am hopelessly biased. If the reports are true, reluctantly I would agree that some strong punishment has to come down: release, suspension or benching.

Agreed! I feel the same way.

IMO, Montgomery should be used a lot more in a variety of ways. He could and should be our James White or Kamara. Just used in a variety of ways in the passing game.
He hasn't been though for whatever reason.

I'm not an instant reaction fire whoever type of person. But in this case, if its true. If he did this because he was pissed. That IMO is a reason to let him go.
Again, if they keep him though I would definitely bench him.
Puts them thinner at RB, but they can always use Cobb in the backfield if needed.

I am not an advocate for releasing a guy for a mistake, but the Packers have made too many bonehead plays the past few years (blown coverages, out of position, etc.) and this situation, if true, gives MM a perfect opportunity to send a message to the rest of the team. Losing Montgomery will not significantly hurt this team and the guys in the locker room need to understand that undisciplined play will cost them their jobs. Cut Montgomery.

If all this is true there is no possible way to keep Montgomery on this team and McCarthy to keep the respect of his players and coaches for that matter. They need to either trade Montgomery before the deadline or just outright waive him. If he's still on this roster next week I'm calling a foul on Gute for sabotaging the locker room and the season to assure his ability to bring in a new HC that he wants. I mean if you really think about it what would happen if they let him get away with it, and then one of their recent high picks or an even more established veteran tried to pull this crap? It would set a terrible precedent.

GB has options regarding Montgomery. GB could release, trade or bench him. Under Article 42, Club Discipline, the team could suspend him for up to four games or fine him.

I've been very supportive of Monty, but I'd support any decision GB makes here. I have no way of knowing what the dynamics are between Monty and his teammates and coaches. GB FO will have a better idea. Go Pack!

Right with TGR had high hopes for Ty, but it is what it is. ! thing I will never get my head around, is how little we use certain guys, cause right now if you told me he would a poor man James White, I'm in. Sadly ego stopped that, still think he going to do well with the ravens.

I hope they can trade him (Ty Montgomery) by Tuesday's deadline, but if not a release would seem the next best option.

Personally, I'd like to see the Packers bring Darius Jackson back to the 53-man roster in order to fill an emergency depth role after moving on from Ty Montgomery.

The difference in this game was Alexander. Without his D, it would have been another Goff show.

The O line did ok against the best in the league. The D pressure was good but not great. Offense/AR played very good but not great.

I've been calling to get rid of MM for the last 3 years. It's players but it's plays too and MM just hasn't gotten it done. A single owner wouldn't stand for this anymore. There is a real downside to having a Board of Directors and a family atmosphere.

Let's see how management handles this. Can they direct this anger into a fire to win? Or are they going to sit on things and continue to 'self scout'.

If Ty did disobey a direct order, he has to be gone now. He won't be getting any carries anyway. Every Packer player has the right to be really ticked off. I don't think he will even want to return to the locker room.

Not diminishing the effort and talent of Alexander (he had a wow of a game) but on second viewing of the game I think that he got lucky by not being called a number of times for holding (4x that I could see).

He needs to tighten that part of his game up now as the refs will be watching him.

On a slightly different tangent, I commented this point before the bye week, but if the Packers could control their penalties then they'd instantly get an uplift.

FYI:
vs Rams - 2 penalties - 10 yards
vs Redskins - 11 penalties - 115 yards
vs Detroit - 12 penalties - 112 yards

Exactly, Dobber. MM does not use his players properly. Belichek designs plays that go the player’s strength(s).
The coaches who witnessed Montgomery’s tantrum need to examine their judgment if they did not inform MM of the alleged incident. Either way, goes to MM’s dubious leadership.

There will be more. Why- People want a voice. I see more of this happening. The chemistry is showing. Ty believed he was better. To many are thinking that. { Adams was given a chance to do better. I understand he's what we want now.} But== MM doesn't have the time to give anymore. People want results. The holes are closing. The emotion is showing. MM is Management. He needs to move on quickly from Ty and Allison. MVS, Adams and St Brown should be this teams new trio. Here's hoping, A-rod won't interfere.

Stockholder is still stuck on Allison 40yd dash time, lol. He completely ignores that the majority of the games Allison has actually played in he moves the chains and repeatedly get open for TD"s and big plays. I call it Ryan/Carter syndrome in reference to Buddy Ryan's dislike of Cris Carter and his inability to see his receivers true skillset through shaded glasses as anything other than extremely limited.

Stockholder isn't stuck on anyone. Allison 1 for 14 yards. Play your best against the Best! MVS makes moves with speed. Allison is no natural. MVS catch put pressure back on the rams secondary. Allison - NO. That. TD catch was huge. Respect the long threat. Without it, the packers will never be Big play. The field will keep on shrinking.

Ty needs to go. Never understood McCarthy's love for moving him from WR to RB. Ty SUCKS as a RB. He's a slash player at best. He can play the slot and other WR type positions, but his touches as RB are taking away from Jones and Williams opportunities and hurt the team in the long run. Not to mention his fragility. Time to cut bait.

Obviously Ty didn't fumble on purpose but it was a borderline "Bostick" level mistake. Instead of just "doing his job" he decided he was going to "do me" and try to make a play.

He wasn't the sole reason we lost but his stubbornness DID take the ball out of Rodgers' hands and that ended our ability to make a comeback.

I'm not usually a "cut that guy" guy, but MM & Gutey may really need to consider it.

Absent Wilson pulling that ball free (an outstanding, heady play), the Packers get the ball on the 20-ish at the 2-minute warning. Monty created that opportunity for the Rams and they made the play. It tears your heart out when you see it happen to your team, but when it happens for you? Man. Somehow the Packers need to be on the "for you" side of more of those clutch plays. Those teams win titles.

Are you saying he perhaps was paid off and did it deliberately to pay off some type of debt he owes? I never thought of that. Perhaps Packers security needs to check into Ty''s financials to see if there's anything odd going on. If there's any type of collusion with L.A. MN, Chi, Russia, Las Vegas etc, he definitely needs to go. This fumble could turn out to be historic for the NFL and not in a good way.

I have been a supporter of TY Montgomery but if this story is true he needs to be chucked. This just can't be allowed on a professional team in any sport.

Back in the Lombardi days, I think it was during the 1962 season, Milt Plum the Lions QB at the time threw an interception late in a close game against the Packers. The Packers converted the pick into a game winning FG. The final score was 13-10 Packers.

When the Lions got back to their locker room after the game ended Alex Karras, the Lions HOF defensive tackle, who hated the Packers, took his helmut off and threw it at Milt Plum's head. Fortunately he missed but the point was made. Maybe some of that needs to happen in the Packer's locker room. Someone needs to do something to wake this team up.

As I much as I think that Monty is a versatile player he needs to go. Thanks, Since '61

Not running the football on 2 third and 2 situations and getting sacked on both was ridiculous play calling. MM going away from the run cost the game. Montgomery should be traded or cut. AND watching the Saints game and the commentary about Taysom Hill really was an indictment of the Packers 'brain trust' and the idiotic decisions they have been making. Lets list a few....Mack, Hill, Watt, Hayward, Hyde. not getting quality safety help, 2014,15,16 drafts etc, etc.

If this true, then Monty needs to be fired (released) or traded before the deadline. What an incredibly selfish act and horrible example to set for young players.

I will say this -- Monty is just one in a long list of players that McCarthy continues to misuse. He should be a dynamic pass catching RB or just go back to WR.

He was a nice temporary fill-in at RB in 2016, but we quickly realized that he was not durable enough as a RB and his sickle cell trait meant that he would heal more slowly. He can be a talented player -- and I think he will be on another team -- but as a WR. He's not a RB. I wish McCarthy would stop trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole.

I think Monty knows he doesn't have a future on the team with all the rookie WRs and rookie RBs on hand now. He'll either get released soon, traded or we'll let him walk at the end of the season.

I'll admit I'm not crazy about releasing a former 3rd rd pick and getting nothing in return. Just bench him the rest of the season or make him inactive if we can't trade him.

I formally apologize to one Brandon Bostic. I equated the egregious actions of one Ty Montgomery to a play Mr. Bostic was trying to make in the moment. I am sorry

The more I think about it, I just realized how much more productive I was sitting on my couch at home drinking beer and watching the game than Ty Montgomery was playing in it.

I'm ashamed to have been such a Ty supporter over the years. If he's not cut or traded this week I'd be irate if I were in that locker room. Forget all the surrounding positives/negatives of the game...he took the ball out of 12's hands by completely disregarding the DIRECT instruction of the coaches. That is inexcusable. With that said, the unfortunate truth is that I'm not sure what/who we've got behind him depth wise. The roster is only 3 deep right now, so if Ty is cut or traded (LOL), who fills his spot at RB? More importantly, does that player equal or come close to equalling what Ty brings to the table?

Why be ashamed? You didn't do anything wrong in hoping he was successful. If your changing your mind now there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Now we find out how stubborn MM and the front office are. Do they make the smart decision and cut him, or do they dig in their heels and stick with him? Please, be the first one.

Well, that assumes that this story is in fact accurate. Shouldn’t leap to conclusions based on rumor or end a career without some investigation.

That said, if it is found to be a fair representation of events, he needs to go.

You are right Coldworld. We are all just assuming that the "one Packers player said" quote was true. Can't Mr. Silver give us the player's name who said this because this is damning if true. They don't give us the name and that's the problem. Now all we have is heresay. This could all be made up to get hits to a website etc in the name of money. It's not so much the fumble itself but the info about the previous series that lead to this player going rogue and fumbling the game away. That part needs to be verified. This is serious stuff and worthy of an investigaton.

Update to my post. Just heard Montgomery speak and he said what that anonymous player said wasn't true. So here we go. He also said he was disappointed in the anonymous player.

why did ty think he could make a play ,when anytime we did have a good return it was called back because of a penalty? all he did was waste time, kill the two minute warning (a free time out), and of course risk fumbling, which he did. you have the highest paid QB in the league, who is the best player at the position and he doesn't even get a chance at driving the team down field, that is pathetic. if they can't trade him (difficult to do now), then you can't cut him right away, so he most likely becomes a game day inactive and a waste of a roster spot until in a few weeks when they can cut him. that way late in the season he won't be able to help out a team that plays the packers, which is where he probably winds up going. in all his time as a RB he still hasn't done more than jones has in his limited time and snaps. wake up McCarthy, please before it is to late.

If they can not trade him they can certainly cut him. We don’t want him around being a locker room cancer. If indeed this story is sufficiently accurate to require his departure, then he would need to be out of the environment as soon as possible to avoid tainting the well and to clearly highlight the unacceptability of such behavior.

To much Time has been invested. The cancer in the locker room is already there. (MMs job on the hot seat.) I see No moves. MM has disciplined players before. Ty will not be trusted again late. Ty will move on.

All this Ty hate is disheartening. He made a really really dumb play. It may have even been insubordination in direct defiance to an order to take a knee. But he has no monopoly on stupid in this game. Running Jones into the line, into Donald and Suh, from his own end zone... who called that idiotic play? Passing the ball long twice on 2nd and two while Jones was doing his best Barry Sanders, whose idea was that?.. and giving Jones only 12 touches, most in the 1st quarter when he rocketed through the Ram D like a missile... who's responsible for removing one of the best offensive weapons we have for long stretches of time? Ty saved McCarthy and Rodgers from scathing criticism of their lame play calling and decision making. Everyone was drooling to see what Rodgers would do with 2 minutes left and the game on the line. The game was also on the line on his last possession and he shit the bed. You want Ty gone for being stupid than in the next sentence demand MM's release and better play from Rodgers.

Totally agree. I don't understand why people who claim to be Packer fans can have so much hatred towards a guy on the team. He made a bad mistake at a bad time....he's not the first, nor will he be the last.

Remember in preseason he fumbled I think three times and took some returns out of the end zone deeper than he did yesterday. I didn't think he would return kick offs after that performance.
He is a lot slower getting to the holes than the other 2 RB's. And after that F you attitude to the head coach to take a knee, I would of fired him or traded him right on the plane ride home. They should trade him now. No doubt about it. I don't want to here any excuses coming from MM to keep him. None.

What is Montgomery doing back there on kickoff returns anyway, he's no burner and sure with the ball he is not. Ty's fumbled a few times already and one I recall was an easy strip. Thought McCarthy benched players who fumbled, look at Devante Mays he's not even with us and never saw the ball again after fumbling his first two. Where's the accountability and why does Ty get a break? The stubborn coach has to play his guys I suppose, accountability be damned. Watch, instead of seeing Ty fly out the door he'll be in the lineup like nothing happened because that's the McCarthy way. If your one of his guys, your in.

Montgomery is calling the reports of a tantrum on his part during the game categorically false. He claims it is character assassination, and that he and his family have been getting abusive and threatening phone calls and internet communications.

Whatever the truth, people should leave him and his family alone and direct their ire to the Packers brass.

Not that curious.

Drafted as a WR out of Stanford in 2015, he was hurt his rookie year and put on IR. In 2016, the Packers had a critical need for a RB and he switched. In 2017, we drafted 3 RBs but Monty was our starter on opening day. He missed half the season with injury....again....and when 2018 arrived it was clear he was #3 on the depth chart.

In a contract year, with no real future in Green Bay, he wasn't getting many opportunities to state his case for a good FA contract. He was frustrated, no doubt. And when your star player cusses you out in the heat of battle, that's never good. Monty felt that not only did he have no future in Green Bay, but that his teammates didn't have his back. And he was right on both counts.

We'll be fine without him. The Ravens got a better player than they were likely to draft in the 7th round. I hope he stays healthy and plays well . He made a bad mistake at a bad time and it's too bad he'll be remembered for that, but it is what it is.
