Emanuel Wilson out to Prove Himself Again

After making the 53-man roster in 2023, the running back room is even more competitive for Emanuel Wilson in year 2.

As an undrafted free agent, your path toward earning a spot on the 53-man roster of an NFL team is an uphill battle from the start. You may have been one of the most valuable players on your college roster, but you almost have no value on the NFL roster you joined.  Draft picks at least have the team's draft investment behind them, UDFA's are just shots in the dark. So, winning a spot on that 53-man roster to start a season is almost like winning the lottery. But it's not over after that. You may have been that lotto winner then, but it can still come crashing down on you.  You will need to continue to prove yourself again and again.

A player that I had eyes on who was on the outside looking in during the 2023 preseason, was running back, Emanuel Wilson. Wilson, an undrafted free agent from Fort Valley State University was looking up the depth chart at Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Patrick Taylor, Lew Nichols, and Tyler Goodson last year. With Jones and Dillon the obvious choices for RBs 1 & 2, Wilson would have to overtake Taylor, Nichols, and Goodson to have a shot at the final roster. Patrick Taylor was the 3rd RB choice for the final 53 the year before, Goodson spent 2022 on the Packers practice squad, and Lew Nichols was a 7th-round pick in the recent draft. So, it was plausible that Emanuel Wilson didn't stand a chance at making the team. But due to injuries to Goodson and Nichols, Wilson got most of the preseason reps and stood out enough to overtake his competition for a spot on the final 53.

For the first 10 games of the season, Wilson only saw action in 7. During this time he had 14 carries for 85 yards. A good chunk of which came after a 31-yard carry against the Rams in week 8. In the passing game, Wilson had four catches for 23 yards. Unfortunately, in week 11, Wilson suffered a shoulder injury and wouldn't play again until the playoffs where he'd see 13 touches for about 47 yards combined in two games. Of course, this first year for Emanuel Wilson wasn't exactly impressive, but it wasn't unimpressive either. At times it seemed as if Wilson was only on the roster as a stash and develop player. The Packers turned to the more experienced running backs when needed even bringing back Patrick Taylor to the game-day roster to seemingly leap-frog Wilson in snaps taken.

Emanuel Wilson seems to have the potential to be a solid RB3 and there was some chatter early in the offseason that he could have some RB2 potential. But with the Packers signing Josh Jacobs, re-signing AJ Dillon, and drafting MarShawn Lloyd, it seems as if his chances have perhaps gotten thinner. At least on the Packers' roster.

Sticking Out Despite Heavy Competition

Two new running backs have automatically leap-frogged Emanuel Wilson on the Packers' depth chart. Josh Jacobs has already proved himself to be a starting NFL running back, so his replacement of Aaron Jones is expected. The other, is rookie third-round draft pick, MarShawn Lloyd. I refer back to my commentary on UDFA's being valued lower than draft picks. It doesn't matter if MarShawn Lloyd's training camp is "meh" at best, he will be on the Packers' 53-man roster. A rookie third-round pick is not a player you cut and hope they make it to the practice squad for development. That third-round pick investment means that the player has a spot on your final roster unless they are hurt. So, there's no chance Emanuel Wilson is overtaking MarShawn Lloyd for a roster spot.

Well, then how is Emanuel Wilson going to make it?

It is with a heavy heart that I have to say, that if Emanuel Wilson wants to make the Packers' final roster, he needs to beat out AJ Dillon. There is no chance the Packers are keeping four running backs. Not with the investments they have in their receivers and offensive linemen. So, if Wilson is making the team, he has to edge out the mayor of Door County.  Many thought that AJ Dillon was a goner until suddenly it was announced that he was signed to a new deal with the team. It made sense at the time to bring him back given the uncertainty of the Packers' running back room before the draft only having Josh Jacobs as the lone experienced back. But after the Packers got their hands on MarShawn Lloyd, it seemed that a Jacobs/Lloyd-led backfield could be a possibility with AJ Dillon kind of battling to stay relevant in Green Bay. The deal signed by Dillon means the Packers won't lose out on much if they cut Dillon before the season starts, so his spot on the roster is far from a guarantee.

Emanuel Wilson really shined in the preseason of 2023. And he's going to need to do that again to make the roster in 2024. It won't be easy. AJ Dillon has returned to the Packers a bit leaner than he was before and he has a chip on his shoulder to ensure he stays in Green Bay much longer. I see two scenarios where AJ Dillon is kept over Emanuel Wilson. The first is that Dillon shows out in training camp that he's gotten a bit better and is worth keeping for longer. The second, is perhaps MarShawn Lloyd doesn't catch on as quickly as anticipated. If Lloyd shows he needs to work on his game a bit more, Dillon could be easily kept to spell Josh Jacobs at the start of the season as the more experienced running back.

If either of those scenarios occurs and Emanuel Wilson finds himself a roster-cut victim, it's not all for not, as I believe he will catch on elsewhere. It may not be right away, it could be after a stint on the Packers practice squad, but he does have the talent to remain on a 53-man roster. Many say if the odds are stacked against you in camp, still show out as you could be auditioning for another team once camp is over.

I see Emanuel Wilson as a roster-cut victim heading to the practice squad or perhaps another team. Unless Josh Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd look like Matt LaFleur-offense veterans by the end of camp, I think AJ Dillon's experience has him beat out Wilson. If that does happen, I hope he sticks on the Packers practice squad as after just another year, he could have his chance as a full-timer.

He is younger, cheaper now, and certainly cheaper than Dillon will be next year if he earns a new long term contract. It’s not impossible that Wilson does what he was doing right at the time he hurt his shoulder, starting to take Dillon snaps as an offensive weapon.

A lot depends on if Dillon post his contract set back is really different offensively. If he looks like last year then Wilson looks more threatening. In the other hand, Wilson needs to show the same burst and that he is functionally equivalent in protection. If the protection is comparable, then the best offensive weapon likely gets it, and that potentially favors Wilson. That is his route to the roster if all are healthy.

I don't see Wilson making the opening roster. Remember Dillon also probably feels he has something to prove after his largely subpar season--and he does. His experience works heavily in his favor, but if he appears stodgy and those quads aren't churning and breaking through tackles in the preseason, then a spot may open up.

I think Dillon could still be a quality 2nd or 3rd back, if he puts in the work and really wants it. The talent is there and with inevitable injuries, 3 deep in the RB room would be nice.

We currently have the best trio of RB's in the league and that is where the Packers want it. There is only a slim chance Wilson will be taken by another team, as an unusually high number of promising RBs were taken in the draft. AJ Dillon showed he could produce big time in a backup role. He also has an unintended ability to injure opponents in the secondary. I say bring in the human battering ram toward the end of the game when the opponents are tired. Why not add injury to insult! No more Mr nice guy on offense! Give Dillon a little respect. He has earned it. .

I agree. RB's like Wilson are readily available late in drafts every year. Good players but not special at the NFL level .I'd put him on PS for depth.

Miami Dolphins would probably have something to say about that.

I'm very excited about Jacobs-Dillon-Lloyd potential, but Dillon, while good, isn't a game changer, and Lloyd has to play on Sundays before we can anoint him.

Meanwhile, Miami has arguably the best back in the NFL, backed up by a guy who averaged almost 8 per carry with over 100 touches and 8 TDs (That's insane, btw). They've got multiple backs on the roster with real experience. That's a tough comparison for the Packers.

Sorry, but I still think the legend of quadzilla as a battering ram is more of a myth.
I've seen too many arm tackles.
If Wilson can be trusted in pass protection plus execute the offense, I say continue the youth movement, release the mayor at final cut down and elevate Wilson.
GPG!

If quadzilla had shown up on field, he would be a highly paid RB. Will it now he isn’t? If not then the risk is he’s another safe but not what you want option. If he’s the same Dillon as last year, would anyone resign him next year or try to get better? Until he too a relatively cheap deal few saw him as necessary or desirable to retain. It’s up to Dillon to find the inner beast this summer.

If he's the 4th RB at cutdowns, then you have to cut him. RBs get hurt, so hopefully he agrees to go to the PS and can be a help later in the year. The Packers seem to have shown more and more of a liking for bigger backs in the Gute years.

Still, we've talked plenty about Dillon, and it's entirely possible he fills some of Deguara's H-back/FB snaps--those that better match his abilities. He can still run...he can run routes...he can catch...he can defend the QB, but like Deguara he's not going to play in-line very much. Dillon has played a little STs in his past. If they start the season with Davis on PUP, Dillon's versatility could be Wilson's path to the 53 if he finds a role on STs and balls out in preseason. He and Jarveon Howard probably get a lot of chances in PS.

Every single roster bubble guy should be practicing kick-offs to the ten yard line. 11 guys on the charge to make a tackle. No room for a kicking specialist with the new rules.

I think RBs who can bounce off a tackle or two and have some juice will be better suited for the new KO rules.

I'm a fan of Wilson, Goodson, Nichols, and also #28. A RB is usually the strongest man on the team, pound for pound. Josh Jacobs benches over 400, and maybe that's crept up over 500#? Much more importantly, it shows up on film by way of a stiffarm I do NOT want to be on the receiving end of!

Can #28 become violent enough to be lead blocker for Mr Jacobs? Not only would that be an incredibly valuable role, he brings so much more to the table and if he can do that would he be violent enough to rush? Or is he just too nice? He is a very nice guy, whereas in Josh Jacobs you can see the instincts of a killer.

I miss #33 and don't want to be attached to any personality ...

GPG!!

Like Royce Newman I've often wondered what kept Wilson on the roster. He must do the other skills well because his running is mediocre. He's never stood out from the crowd.

Wide receivers and running backs are coming out of college at a dime-a-dozen so if they can't make an impact there are immediate options.

Wilson led the NFL in preseason rushing yards last year with 223. I know it's a small sample size, and a lot of those yards came on one long TD run, but he definitely showed some spark. Wilson is very young and showed some improvement last year, while Newman has been in decline the past couple years.

I think you hit on two key ideas:
1. ...most of his yards came on one run. Take that one run away, and he averaged 3.9 ypc...still, he DID make that run.
2. ...it was in preseason.
There are a lot of one-year preseason wonders...if he can duplicate that, it would help.

Having breakaway speed is huge though. That's one thing Wilson brings to the table that A.J. Dillon does not. A running back who is capable of breaking off big runs creates opportunities for everyone else. And often, those big plays win games. We'll see what he can do this year in preseason.

I do agree that only a crazy preseason or Dillon going to the Deguara role will get Wilson a spot on the 53.

I've seen times when we've had a run of injuries at RB. Remember moving Ty Montgomery from WR to RB because of all the injuries in 2017/2018? Remember when we started the season with Ahman Green and Tony Fisher but out of nowhere Samkon Gado led the team in rushing.

As a practical matter, I can only see keeping 3 on the 53 unless one of them is the primary returner. With the rule changes, I suspect that returners are going to need better hands, because instead of soaring kicks, they're going to have to field spinning squibs and hard line drives.

It's possible somebody could get hurt in training camp and be put on IR. I like Wilson, just like I like Lynch, but the RB unit is like the WR unit in that it's a hard group to crack.

This guy had a pretty good DII career. He was a second team All-America, and was in the Top 10 in things like total yardage. Currently, he's probably #4 on the depth chart.

Wilson has been very impressive in preseason.
The issue when assessing the talent is that his opportunities during preseason have generally come as the 3rd or 4th back, so he's usually taking those snaps vs. opposing teams' 3rd string defenses- a lot of players who are bottom of roster, ST'ers, and a number of guys who aren't making the final 53 man roster.

Not a knock on Wilson. He's doing more with those opportunities than most other 3rd or 4th string RBs do with their opportunities vs. similar defenders. Just... Packers fans should temper their expectations of how that level of preseason production vs. defenses comprised of mostly benchwarmers and future Home Depot associates will translate to the field on Sundays vs. starting NFL defenses.

I think he's an NFL talent back, but I don't think he's special. Frankly, I think the Packers made a mistake keeping Wilson on the active roster vs. Patrick Taylor in the past when you look at the complete skillset. I understand they kept Wilson because he's got more burst than Taylor. I get it.

Best of luck to wilson. I figure he's got an opportunity to earn a second contract- a vet minimum contract- as a depth RB somewhere in the NFL. Thats more than most nfl players will ever see.
