Five Fearless Predictions for the 2020 Packers Season

Training camp has ended for the Green Bay Packers and now the team is beginning their preparations for the season opener in Minnesota on September 13.

Even with the season so close, it’s tough to accurately judge where this team is at without the benefit of a full training camp and any preseason games.

Still, here are five fearless predictions of what we should expect to see from the Packers in 2020:

5. Aaron Jones Will Have Fewer Touchdowns in 2020

Running back Aaron Jones had an outstanding season in 2019, gaining more than 1,000 yards on the ground and finishing second on the team with 49 receptions. He also tied for the league lead with 19 total touchdowns during the regular season.

I expect Jones to have another strong season, but the addition of rookie A.J. Dillon will likely reduce the number of touches Jones gets near the goal line. The Packers will also likely spread their touches around more between their backs, tight ends and receivers this year. Even though Jones will prove his 2019 performance was no fluke, he will probably go down to between 12 and 15 touchdowns in 2020.

4. Rashan Gary Makes An Impact

I’m not ready to pencil Gary in for a Pro Bowl berth, but he will earn a lot more playing time in 2020 and he will make more of an impact on the field.

The injury to rookie Kamal Martin and the departure of Kyler Fackrell will both help give Gary more chances to be on the field in Mike Pettine’s different packages. Gary will take a noticeable step forward in his second year in the league. I expect he will notch between seven and nine sacks and will make his presence known to opposing offenses.

Assuming he stays healthy, look for Gary’s impact to increase as the season progresses.

3. Marquez Valdes-Scantling Becomes an Impact Receiver

Valdes-Scantling has had a strong training camp and that will carry over to the regular season. He will be one of the Packers top three receivers along with Davante Adams and Allen Lazard.

MVS will be more than a one-dimensional deep threat. This is the year he begins to contribute on slants, comeback routes and other intermediate passes. Being able to make those kinds of catches will be a key for Valdes-Scantling this season.

Expect about 40 catches for MVS with a few memorable big plays mixed in. He will finally gain the trust of his quarterback and that will mark a turning point in his career. He’s far from an elite player, but this year will mark a big step forward for the third-year man out of South Florida.

2. Aaron Rodgers Has a Strong Season

No, the numbers will not match 2011 or 2014, but Aaron Rodgers will have a strong season and there are a few reasons for it. First, he feels challenged after the drafting of Jordan Love. Rodgers clearly wasn’t thrilled when the Packers traded up to draft his potential successor and he will respond to this challenge accordingly. Rodgers also knows he needs to have a strong season to keep his job in 2021 and beyond and he will play well.

The fact that he is now in his second year in Matt LaFleur’s offense will also help, as will the fact that the additions of players like Dillion and Josiah Deguara who are both great fits in that system. Last year was a season of adjustment for Rodgers, this year will be a season of growth in that offense.

Finally, even though the Packers didn’t draft a wide receiver, the addition of Dillon and Deguara and the return to health of MVS and Equanimeous St. Brown and the growth of Lazard will all help Rodgers thrive in 2020. Look for 35 touchdowns, at least 3,800 yards and no more than eight interceptions this year. His yardage totals may not be as prolific, but he will run an improved offense this season.

1. The Run Defense Will Be OK

Notice I did not say great or even good. The Packers were ranked 23rd in the NFL in rushing yards allowed in part because the team emphasizes defending the pass. That emphasis will continue but the Packers run defense will improve to the middle of the pack, maybe between 15th and 18th in the league.

Improvement will come from a healthy Christian Kirksey, more playing time for Rashan Gary and Kingsley Keke and the availability (hopefully) of Raven Greene for more of the season. The Smith Brothers will also be better at taking angles and holding the edge which will help prevent some of those long runs to the outside that hurt the Pack so much. Another factor will be the improvement that Darnell Savage takes in his second year at stopping the run.

The 2020 Packers will never be the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers or the 2000 Ravens at stopping the run, but they will be good enough to prevent any repeats of last year’s NFC Championship Game and that’s a big step forward for this team.

I agree with all points the run defense will do the Packers in this Season with no pre season timing will take time in the passing game so teams will run heavy and that’s not good for the Packers, I refuse to watch any games in real time I cancelled the Sunday ticket , I will read about the team and watch the re plays in the NFL network , the ratings will be down tremendously because the NFL made a big mistake supporting politics over football and they will feel it financially.

The run defense will be more important this year, I agree, especially early. Coordinating offenses in general will be tough. This is going to be the strangest season ever but it's better than no season at all. Thanks for the comment, Lphill.

haha, its not about money anymore. We are talking about right and wrong and morals. Wonder what the ultra right bigots will do with there time. Nobody of them can play a sport by them self.

And its country over cowards and has nothing to do with politics

The NFL made here best move ever. You have to stand up for whats right no matter what. Otherwise they may left the good people (80 plus %) anyway......

"Derr, the NFL made a big mistake supporting politics over football"

Politics? You mean like playing the national anthem before games? Or covering the field with the star spangled banner? Or accepting money from the armed forces to bolster receuitment by pointless displays of national pride? Saluting service members? Blacklisting Kaepernick for taking a knee?

Oh right, it's only "politics" when you personally don't agree with something political, and that's why nobody ever takes you seriously, you hypocrite.

Gil if you don't stop making such reasonable predictions all the time you'll continue to force the Cheesehead faithful to make up our own over the top predictions just for the sake of debate. Watch out 72 Dolphins, you're getting company. GPG!

I'm sorry, gkarl. I will try to be more outrageous next time. I'll talk about Aaron Jones 2,000 yard season (combined) and 25 touchdowns and we'll go from there. LOL. Thanks as always for commenting, always good to hear from you.

My predictions differ. 5. No rookie will have an impact on the season. 4. The RT position will never be settled 3. The secondary will have more Tackles then the Lbs. 2. Arron Rodgers passes more then they run the ball. 1.The DL will not stop the run in the playoffs.

I agree wholeheartedly with 2 and 4 is a fear of mine especially with Turner now hurt. 3 would be a big problem in the long run as well. Thanks for sharing, stockholder and thanks for the comment.

That sounds like an 8-8 team to me.

I think they will be way better in 3 of the 5 aspects the author mentioned.

The Pack is an 11-8 team and wins the division.

Well, if they're 11-8, which means they played 19 games, I believe that puts them in the Super Bowl. I'll take it!

I would take the playoff berth. I think this is a 10-6 kind of team with a playoff berth, but this year it's harder to make predictions with nothing being close to normal. Thanks for the comment, SpikeHyzer.

And if they don't....we'll wait and then see if they can make their 3rd or 4th year leap.

I used to think their was only a 2nd year leap...until i started reading other people's articles and comments. 6th year leap anyone?

Those are safe, bland and conservative predictions.

Those are the LEAST of my expectations.

Nothing fearless at all about it.

Ya, I think they are common sense predictions, I think the headline just throws it off a bit.
Ya, AJ TD total was an one time thing, not luck but something one should not ever expect.

The run defense will be product of circumstances in MHO. Just for the reasons you stated plus scores, injuries, match-ups etc... 1st place schedule..This could be applied to all predictions in reality. I agree that the Packers positioned themselves for an improved run defense.

Couldn't agree more with your ARod prediction. The scheme is perfect for him, requires less athleticism, allows for more effective audibles, players will be schemed open so he doesn't have to scramble waiting for someone to get open, will play into his more conservative passing mind set.

MVS and Gary are the ones that have some boldness to them. Hearing nothing but good things about them in camp, they both have elite skill sets. Now it's just putting them in positions to perform and then they perform. MVS just looked so bad last year I'm worried he might just be a guy that shrinks when it comes to the games. I hope not. So excited for Gary. He could be something special.

Lets Go Pack!!!

Thanks for the comment, CoachDino. I think Gary can take a big step forward this year. MVS was off to a good start the first four games last year before he got hurt and all but disappeared. If he can get back to where he was or even beyond, it could make a big difference for the offense. Looking forward to football, finally. This has been the longest and strangest offseason ever.
