Maggie's Pre-Game Six Pack - 2020 Week 4

Here are six things to look for on Monday Night Football against the Falcons.

The Packers host the Falcons on Monday Night Football. Here are six things to keep an eye on heading into the matchup at Lambeau Field:

1. Still Making History After Over 100 Years

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Green Bay Packers are the first team in NFL history to post 35 or more points and no turnovers in each of their first three games.

Coincidentally, the Falcons are giving up an average of 36 points per game so far in 2020. The 108 points against the Falcons ranks 32nd in the NFL. Expect this to be another high-scoring affair for both sides on Monday night.

2. WR1s Back, WR2s Out?

Both Davante Adams and Julio Jones, the respective WR1s of their teams, returned to practice on Thursday. Oddly enough, the WR2s on both teams, Allen Lazard and Calvin Ridley, did not participate. Lazard underwent core muscle surgery earlier this week and is out indefinitely, per reports. This is a devastating blow to not only Lazard, who’s coming off a career game against the Saints, but the Packers who had seemingly found a WR2 behind Adams.

On the current active roster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling is really the only receiver with extended playing time beyond Adams and Lazard. And just as the loss of Lazard will impact the Packers on Monday night, losing Ridley would also be significant for the Falcons, as he currently leads the team with four touchdowns in three games.

3. Quarterbacking the Defense

Inside linebacker Ty Summers played quarterback in high school before switching to defense in college at TCU. You may know that already, but it’s one of my favorite quick facts. Summers threw for over 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns in high school while rushing for a whopping 31 scores and over 1,700 yards.

Filling in for an injured Christian Kirksey midway through the Saints game, Summers donned the communication helmet and called out plays for the defense the rest of the game. Having only played on special teams before Monday Night Football, Summers ended up leading the team in total tackles with nine. He brings an athleticism and speed to the inside linebackers position that Green Bay hasn’t seen in quite some time, and he’ll have more opportunities to show off his abilities on Monday Night Football with Kirksey not practicing.

4. Keke, Do You Love Brees?

Sorry for the title. I couldn’t resist. It’s another overplayed joke but you’re just going to have to live with it. Second-year defensive lineman Kingsley Keke had a career outing against future first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, tallying his first two NFL sacks.

He was all over the place for the defense Sunday night with one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble in addition to his two sacks. It’s possible Kenny Clark can return for Monday night’s matchup, but whether he does or doesn’t, Head Coach Matt LaFleur said the expectation now is for Keke to continue to build off his impressive Week 3 performance. If Keke can put up these types of stat lines next to Clark when he returns, that could go a long way in improving the defensive line long-term.

5. Jones-ing for More

Through three games, Aaron Jones is currently averaging an exceptional 6.1 yards per carry. His career average is 5.1. Jones has four rushing touchdowns so far in 2020 and 303 yards, and the Falcons defense has already given up five scores on the ground, including 113 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry. He’s also accumulated 95 yards through the air with an additional touchdown.

He’ll get his reps on Monday night against a Falcons defense, but they might come in the passing game. The Falcons defense is currently ranked 31st overall in passing yards, passing attempts, and passing touchdowns.

While Jones is the bell cow of the offensive backfield, Jamaal Williams continues to impress in his limited reps. Williams has yet to score a touchdown this season, but he’s posted a perfect 100% catch percentage on his targets. With Lazard out indefinitely and the Falcons vulnerable o the pass, look for the running backs and tight ends to get involved early and often.

6. Rodgers Remains Untouchable, Literally

Despite opening each game thus far with a new starting offensive line, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has kept a clean jersey for much of 2020. He’s only been sacked twice on the season, and he’s only been hit six times. Elgton Jenkins, Rick Wagner, and Billy Turner have all had their turns at right tackle, yet the shuffling has had seemingly no effect on Rodgers.

Both Rodgers and LaFleur have taken turns heaping ample, well-deserved praise on the offensive line, and the Falcons defense will provide another test. The Falcons front-seven boasts some impressive talent, with Grady Jarrett already at 2.5 sacks and five quarterback hits this season. Additionally, Takkarist McKinley has a sack of his own and an impressive seven quarterback hits. That said, both Jarrett and McKinley did not participate in practice on Thursday.

2. WR1s Back, WR2s Out?
One of the biggest reasons why I was wanting the Packers to get a WR early in the draft was because of depth. I was good with our top 3. But I felt we would need more depth. Now our depth will be greatly tested. With No Lazard, No EQ, possibly no Adams. That leaves us with MVS and a lot of ???
The good news is we have other guys that can play. We have great running backs, really versatile and good TE's. Having a couple of our top WR's out will really show us what LaFleur is about. How will he set up the game plan. And how will he use the players he does have.

4. Keke, Do You Love Brees?
I really really like Keke. Something about him reminds me of a young Cullen Jenkins. A guy that just knows how to get to the QB. He has that quickness to him.

5. Jones-ing for More
This is a game where I think we will see all 4 RB's used and used a lot. I think this maybe the first game where we see a quite a few snaps for Dillon. I think we could see Jones and Ervin together a lot with possibly another RB on the field with that. I think we will see Jones and Ervin used in the passing game a lot.

Come on.....let’s get over the “why didn’t we draft a WR” talk. Our “pass catchers” will be just fine. Even without Lazard, which I’m totally bummed about, we will still throw up 40+ points against the Falcons. That goes the same without Adams. Although, getting thin margins, next man up. We are scheming “pass catchers” open, don’t matter if they are WR, RB, HB or TE.

The reality you never know where injuries will hit and a team doesn’t have the luxury of a 90 man roster. So, it’s hard to draft for the anticipation of injuries and/or Opt out as was the case with Funchess.

As I talked about pre season, this year with Covid and injuries galore, management and coaching will make a bigger difference. I think that is holding true.

Then add to it that any WR drafted this year, really would not contribute significantly for 1-2 years. WRs/TEs have to read the defense much like Rodgers, then be on the same page with Rodgers while running good routes. Very few WRs are prepared to do that.

With or without Lazard, , if we keep getting guys blocked, Rodgers can keep this team moving down the field. When you study the Atlanta defense, they look pretty bad. They’ve made Foles and Prescott look like HOFers. We’re averaging 40+ and I think we’ll hit that.

Atlanta is averaging 30 ppg. If we hold them under that, does it mean our defense is better than average? Then we have a bye week to figure things out. This is MSVs shot. No EQ, or Lazard, he’s our starter. If he can stay healthy, get his man blocked, and catch some balls for us.....now is the time to show it.

I fully expect that we’ll beat Atlanta, go 4-0, use the bye week, and then we’ll be tested in Tampa.
