Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Here's Hoping...
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past
- Bruce Springsteen, Land of Hopes and Dreams.
It's not easy coming up with things to write about this time of year. As I was pondering ideas, I realized how many question marks there are we prepare for this season (and pretty much every season). It's a long list of things that we can only hope go a certain way. Will our season end in sorrows once again or will our Super Bowl dreams be realized? For the latter to be realized, here are some of the things I'm hoping for:
DEFENSE:
I hope that Johnathan Gannon and his coaching staff (with several ex-coordinators) develop a scheme that uses the Packers' personnel in the most effective way.
I hope the Packers can generate some type of impactful pass rush until Micah Parsons returns.
I hope Lukas Van Ness figures things out.
I hope Keisean Nixon realizes how well he plays will determine how much money he will get paid in the future.
I hope Brandon Cisse is good enough to be part of the CB rotation at some point this season.
I hope Zaire Franklin's veteran presence is exactly what was needed in the middle of the Packers' defense.
I hope Javon Hargrave discovers the fountain of youth this year.
I hope Xavier McKinney remembers how to catch footballs.
I hope Edgerrin Cooper is allowed to be Edgerrin Cooper.
I hope Devonte Wyatt can stay healthy.
OFFENSE:
I hope Matt LaFleur's off-season full break-down of the offense opened his eyes to why playing with a lead has been a problem.
I hope Jordan Love is allowed to do more with his legs than straight drop-backs.
I hope Jordan Morgan is up to the task of protecting Jordan Love's blindside.
I hope Zach Tom is still Zach Tom when he returns.
I hope the Josh Jacobs situation turns out to not be what it has been assumed to be.
I hope Marshawn Lloyd gets to play football in 2026.
I hope the trimmed WR room proves to be just what Watson, Reed and especially Golden needed to impact the offense in bigger ways.
I hope Tucker Kraft gets a new deal and his play makes him worth every penny.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
I hope Cam Achord can finally be the new guy that delivers competence across all of the Packers' special teams units.
I hope Trey Smack can actually make field goals.
If you have your own specific hopes for this season, let me know in the comments.

Andy DuFresene had some thoughts on these matters, and he's of the mind they're all good things, maybe the best things.

I will fill out the rest of the offensive line:
I hope Aaron Banks stays healthy and is at least an average left guard.
I hope Sean Rhyan finds his home at center in his first full year starting at the position.
I hope the same thing happens for Anthony Belton at right guard.

Bingo my main wishes also. If that happens it would help keep a lead by running the ball , eating up the clock, and setting up some killer pass plays.

I think our O line is the single biggest key, and biggest unknown re: this season's success. Both tackles are also currently questions; even with Zach Tom's proven production, will he return to 100%? How long has it been since we've seen him at 100%? He's played very well through some serious and seriously painful injuries, imagine what he could do without obstacles. Our LT ...
I love the idea of depth on the roster being only 3 O linemen to free up roster spots at EDGE, or elsewhere on defense. Jager Burton for the interior, Kinnard for RT, and our other 5th round draft pick is Travis Glover, can he sub at LT? He started 35 games there in College. If we lose more than 3 O linemen due to injury in one game?!? Stash 5 O Linemen on the PS and we should be good.

I hope we learn how to run block and yet also pass more. The thing that gnaws at the back of my mind is that we are hoping for change to things we’ve hoped fruitlessly for change in before. That sort of hope always seems closer to forlorn than foreordained.

My biggest hopes are (a) "All gas and no brakes" becomes a reality, not a slogan that is discarded when the Packers get a decent lead.
For the defense, that there are multiple looks from the DL to get pressure on the opposing QB, rather than wishing and hoping one guy finally has the light go on, or depends too much on a player who has done very well up until now.

"My biggest hopes are (a) "All gas and no brakes" becomes a reality, not a slogan that is discarded when the Packers get a decent lead."
This was my biggest criticism of LaF and why I thought he needed to be replaced. He's woefully short on killer instinct.

This offense should be able to put up 50 burgers on average!!

I hope LaFleur becomes a better in-game head coach. He needs to improve in-game adjustments, clock management, and challenge flag decisions. All three have hurt the Packers in the past. After seven seasons I would like to see improvement in each area, but I am not holding my breath.........

There are other improvements he can make as the team leader, too ...

I hope for one thing....that the coaches infuses an iron will to win into the players.
No more slogans and no more mental breakdowns. A throwback to where teams fear playing the Packers at Green Bay.
OK maybe more than one thing!

For the Offense it all starts with the offensive line. I'm tired of watching Josh Jacobs getting smashed BEHIND the LOS because the opposing defense blow the Packers O-Line straight backwards on most plays.
How many times have we watched Jacobs get smashed 2 yards behind the LOS. Hell, most plays Derrick Henry runs 3 yards before the opposing defense even put a finger on him. Then last season in the playoff loss to the Bears, they couldn't protect Love in the 2nd half...Against THE BEARS! Are you kidding me?
Ted Thompson was the absolute best at drafting O-Linemen. Sitton, Lang, Bakhtiari, & Lindsey to name a few were all draft in the 4th round or later.
Just LOOK at Gutes O-Line picks for the last 8 years and you'll see it's all starts there...With Gute.
Coldworld
July 08, 2026 at 10:00 am
Does it start with Gute? Maybe, but it seems to me that even if it does, the use of talent and the philosophy and technique taught even more dubious. We don’t improve players. At best they’ve stagnated. Aside from Tom who came in good and technically excellent, the best we’ve managed is stasis. We’ve made headscratching decision after decision since Stenovich completely and disastrously rejigged the OL almost entirely going into a championship game.
Perhaps the answer to this is at hand. If a healthy Morgan can’t play LT, Banks LG and Belton RG then maybe you will be proved right that the talent has not been real, not just the coaching.

I think the coaches developing, evaluating, and using O linemen has been more of a problem than Gutey acquiring talent. Bigger yet has been the mismatch between GM and HC, seen on our O line more than anywhere else. Hopefully this gets fixed, otherwise it will leave a very sad legacy ...

Yeah Nick, I think that problem was the reasoning behind making the OL bigger so we can play bully ball. I don't care how good a RB is, if he has to avoid D-linemen 2 yards into the backfield, he is going to struggle. It all starts on the O & D lines.

Hope: Chris McClennan (6'4", 313, 34" arms, 11" hands) can play plenty of snaps at nose/1 tech, to free up Hargrave, along with Brinson, Brooks and sometimes Van Ness on the D line, to pressure the passer from either side of him.
Hope: The O line AS A WHOLE is much better than it was in 2025, with players now in what should be their optimal positions, plus an improvement jump from at least one of the non-starter lottery-ticket lineman, along with what looks like a very nice draft addition in C/G Jager Burton.
But my biggest hope is that the talking heads that put the Packers in third position in the NFC North, get to eat a crow banquet of major proportions.

I'm hoping we sweep the North and win all of our games at Lambeau, for starters.

I hope Tucker Kraft is still Tucker Kraft when he returns.
I hope Barryn Sorrell makes a second year jump.
I hope Special Teams becomes a top 20 unit.
I hope Matt Lafleur stops creating meltdown opportunities in the second half of games.
GregC
July 08, 2026 at 09:08 am
Special teams a top 20 unit? Do you dare?
Seriously, I thought they were mostly okay last year except they simply did not have anyone on the roster who was a threat as a punt returner. And as has been the case in recent years, it seemed that almost every special teams error cost them a game. So I'm hoping that this year the special teams blunders only happen in games that they are winning comfortably.

First off AL "Land of Hopes and Dreams is one of my favorite Bruce Springsteen songs. Great choice.
MY hope in addition to Al's and other previously mentioned in the thread is for the Packers to consistently play 60 minutes of solid football in every game. The coaches need to get the players to realize that they can't plus, or quarters or even halves off. The team needs to be better prepared mentally and to become a more physical team for the entire game. Thanks, Since '61

I consider that a function of HC. In the leadership category. One of the many things he can improve ...

That is a lot of hopes and makes the burden of creating excuses much harder.
Disagree if you want, but we endure it every year, the moment when the Packer season ends without the 'hoped-for' growth, advancement, development of coaches and players, and FO decisions.
I hope I win the lottery, but I'm not investing more money in the purchase of tickets.
The list by AL makes me more sure that the odds are worse for an SB entry, perhaps even for a division title.

Against the Rams and Seahawks I think acSB this season is pie in the sky. How bout playing for 60 minutes per game?

If it's "hopes and dreams" ala "ask the genie, without being greedy," I will only ask one thing:
"May the Packers please be the healthiest team in the league this year."

I was going to say the same thing P A E. If we can just stay relatively healthy this year, including the guys hurt last year coming back 100%, then this year will be better. Backups are backups for a reason and while some might be rookies, they are all a step back in talent from the starters.

I hope season ticket holders fill the seats at Lambeau rather than selling their tickets to opposing fans.
I hope the crowd at Lambeau takes a loud and active role in supporting the Packers.
I hope Matt has looked at all the tape, realized again it's on him, and has fixed it.
I hope the Packers humiliate the Bears and shut Ben Johnson's smartass mouth.
I hope the biggest worry we all have this fall is Packers football.

I hope the Packers are so good this year they silence their critics.
I hope the players that returned from last year are better.
I hope the injured guys like Parsons, Kraft, and Tom all get healthy.
I hope that last year's rookies like Golden, Belton, Williams, Oliver, Sorrell, Brinson, and Stackhouse have all gotten a year bigger, stronger, and smarter.

I hope the Packers can learn to salt games away in the fourth quarter whether it be on offense, defense, or special teams. Find the killer instinct and apply it.

Health would be #1 after losing so many key players last year.
Strong OL play by starters and backups if we need them. I, for one, think our OL and backups are better than people think.
If we are standing pat @ Edge rusher, and I hope we are not, then I hope multiple players make a jump. It seems like it's been 10 years that we have been waiting on LVN to arrive. If he doesn't this year, he will get run over by rookies and first year players. Sign Clowney.
I hope we solve the TE problem with existing players or sign a Y TE to finally make that group a strength.
Same with the CBs.
SicSemperTyrannis
July 08, 2026 at 03:12 pm
I think a TE who's a great blocker and at least a legitimate threat as a receiver is Gutey's biggest need to acquire, but can't pull the trigger yet because of the other variables. (At RB, Edge, CB, hopefully not LB or O line)
