The Tennessee Titans are considering University of Texas defensive backs coach Jerry Gray for their defensive coordinator vacancy, Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesmen reports.

Gray spent one season as a player with the Houston Oilers, and entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Titans in 1997, spending four years on the same coaching staff as new Titans head coach Mike Munchak.

A two-time All-American at Texas, Gray joined the Longhorns' coaching staff in January after spending 2010 as the Seattle Seahawks secondary coach.

According to a January report in the Statesmen, Gray's salary at the University of Texas is $425,000.

Though he's an in-house hire, Munchak may be looking to full his first staff with coaches, and players, from the franchise's past.

Gray would qualify, as would fellow Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, whose son currently plays for the team. Ray Sherman could be looked at as a receivers coach, and current Seattle Seahawks running backs coach Sherman Smith could serve in a similar capacity, or as an offensive coordinator if Mike Heimerdinger is not retained.

Smith coached the Titans running backs from 1995-2007.
