Packers 2023 Draft Class Continues ‘Spring of Special Teams’

Rich Bisaccia has been given the resources necessary to finally turn Green Bay's special teams unit around.

There can be no-one happier with how Green Bay’s offseason has played out than Rich Bisaccia.

After embarking on the unenviable task of fixing the Packers’ long-suffering special teams unit a year ago, and making some headway, Bisaccia has been granted plenty of reinforcements ahead of the 2023 campaign.

Ensuring Keisean Nixon returned for another season in Green Bay was a crucial piece of business, after his electrifying breakout as a kick returner in 2022, but fellow core special teamers Rudy Ford, Dallin Leavitt, and Eric Wilson were also brought back.

On top of that, Green Bay’s only free agent additions were long snapper Matt Orzech and safety (but mainly special teamer) Tarvarius Moore.

Then the draft rolled around, and GM Brian Gutekunst gifted Bisaccia with a bushel of rookies who have special teams experience, and not just in the late rounds.

Green Bay’s first-round pick, Lukas Van Ness, once blocked two punts in a single game at Iowa, and second-rounder Jayden Reed was an accomplished returner at Michigan State.

When asked by a media member at rookie minicamp how he can help the Packers, Reed’s first answer: “special teams”.

Fellow second-round pick Luke Musgrave has a blocked punt on his resume, which he then returned for a touchdown while at Oregon State.

On day three, the Packers spent a sixth-round draft pick on kicker Anders Carlson. This raised eyebrows given Carlson’s injury history and subsequent loss of form at Auburn, but it seems this pick was made specifically with Bisaccia in mind.

The special teams coordinator worked with Anders’ brother, Daniel, with the Raiders and helped the elder Carlson reignite his NFL career after previously struggling in Minnesota. Daniel Carlson is now one of the better kickers in the league.

Discussing Anders Carlson after the draft, Gutekunst said: “He (is) a kicker that Rich has extensive experience with, he had his brother and has known him for quite a while.

“He’s struggled through some injuries over the past couple years after a very promising start. We felt really good about where he was headed and the relationship there that Rich had was a positive factor for us picking him.”

He later added: “With kickers, Rich has a long track record and a very successful one, and I felt really good about how he felt about that guy.”

Seventh-round pick Anthony Johnson Jr. boasted about his special teams ability when speaking with the media after being selected by the Packers.

He said: “I’ve got over a couple hundred special teams reps, I’ve been playing special teams since a freshman. I’ve done gunner, I’ve done anti-jammer, I’ve ran down on kickoff, I’ve done a lot and I’ve made plays. I’m not just a body out there.”

Carrington Valentine, also selected in round seven, has extensive special teams experience from his time at Kentucky, and Green Bay’s final pick, Grant DuBose may have the most interesting special teams background of all this year’s selections.

DuBose has experience as a gunner, but also… as a long snapper.

When he was in high school, his team’s long snapper quit and DuBose stepped in, snapping the ball one handed, and according to him, doing so effectively. It’s highly unlikely he’ll be called to action as a long snapper in Green Bay, but should an emergency strike, DuBose’s party trick could come in handy.

It’s crucial for rookies to contribute on special teams, and with Bisaccia leading the first practice of rookie minicamp while head coach Matt LaFleur attended a charity event, the new guys will have been made well aware of that fact.

After the Packers essentially lost a playoff game because of special teams ineptitude, Gutekunst has spent two years aggressively pursuing improvement in that phase. With plenty of resources now committed to what Bisaccia calls “we-fense”, 2023 could be the season where tangible growth is evident.

Mark,
Great article!

This just gets me even more jazzed about this teams rookies and where this team is headed. Super excited they will all grow together.

Like Anthony Johnson's quote "I'm not just a body out there".

This is the write up on Anthony Johnson, PFF 90th ranked prospect the Packers drafted in the 7th round!

90. S ANOTHONY JOHNSON JR., IOWA STATE
Pros
• You want experience? How does 3,159 career snaps between outside corner and safety sound?

• Fills from deep like his life depends on it. Will make plays at the line from a deep alignment

• Unbridled physicality. Tone setter. Won't back down from contact.

Cons
• Still learning when and where to take chances on the back end.

• Aggression works against him in space, making it tough for him to adjust angles.

• Makeup speed is lacking when he has to match verticals.

Bottom line: You can't ask for a more encouraging first year switching from corner to safety. Johnson has the traits to be a long-term starter at the position.

Player comp: Malcolm Jenkins

Hell yeah Knock...Now, how in the hell can't you love this kid! Nope, he's not just a body folks!

I hope he can play a position on defense. We only dress out 10 DBs, and when the starters get hurt, these backups are on the field against guys that are a lot better than what they've seen, QBs who are a lot smarter and more experienced.

I'm sure many of us remember Jarret Bush, and how he repeatedly made the team as a solid, smart, effective special teams player. But he had a hard time covering his own shadow, and everybody knew that, so you had to hold your breath when he was on the f ield. Of course, he did make a real smart, effective play in the Super Bowl.

Right now, I'm seeing our 10 DBs as Alexander, Douglas, Stokes, Savage, Nixon and Ford (the 70s show) If we get Amos back....and I think we will....then that brings us to 7.

Naturally, nobody's hurt yet. Who are our next 5? Leavitt, Wiggins, Morgan, Sapp? Ballantine, Valentine, Shermar, Gaines,Hooper? Kiondre and Johnson?

Conventional Wisdom says that ability to play well on special teams is a deciding factor in whether some of these guys make the roster. I'm saying that they're very likely to be lined up in an important game for us.

STs have been impressively invested in...talented players and an accomplished, top shelf coach to motivate and maximize their talents on the field.

Defense...the investment 8 first rounders is I believe the most in Packer history. To hire Barry to coach them is akin to turning your investment portfolio over a financial consultant who constantly underperforms the market.

The young guys were the most dynamic playmakers last season, expect the same with the New Offense incorporating a real 12 look with Kraft and Musgrave, maybe Cam McDonald sneaking on the 53. Lew Nicholls is a between the tackles RB with the low center of gravity. Reed will work the slot just like Randall Cobb as a rookie.
The O line is veteran. No, my uncertainty still lies with Barry's defense.

I think our efforts on special teams will result in penalties, injuries, and turnovers more often than they result in big play for us.

Make your field goals, Put kickoffs out the back of the endzone, punts out of bounds, only return kicks that you have to and always fair catch punts. One of the bonuses of this is you don't have to spend roster spots on guys who play like a special teams demon with their hair on fire but can't play a position on the field very well.

Our returner was an ALL Pro who had 1000 yds in half a season. That's 10 scores end zone to end zone worth of field position. I'm with you on punting and kicking it to an unreturnable spot of the field. When they kick it to us short...We got a difference maker.

Rich Bisaccia is natural leader of men. That was very obvious when he was interim coach for Raiders and, look miracle, he had better record than previous coach, while have somewhat harder schedule.

It was seen, also, after he came to Green Bay. Unit started to perform better, except Packers punt returner, Amari Rodgers, who was cut after RB lost his patience and asked that from Brian Gutekunst.

I believe Packers ST will be top 10 unit, maybe top 5, when you take in consideration that lot of drafted players had lot of experience in playing ST. Maybe some UDFA would also contribute as well.

I love Rick Bisaccia. I mean common, every picture we see of the guy he's screaming or in yesterdays piece by Cory it looks like he's getting ready to snatch the play call sheet from Joe Barry! Probably for one of his calls playing 7 yards off on 3rd and 3 with the opposing QB in shotgun.

Gute has done a magnificent job of adding not just talent through the draft for ST, but getting the guys Bisaccia WANTED and then keeping them. Hey, the record may not be 13-3 (but one never knows) but it's going to be more fun than I can remember. Don't get me wrong, losing sucks! But in all honesty I can't remember a season I'm more stoked about.

ST just could be the Packers top ranked unit this year.

In one year, one talented coach transformed a seemingly endless stream of ST coaching futility.

Why it is so difficult to hire excellent coaching for defense...especially when outstanding candidates have been available?

The subhead to the article should read: Excellent Coaching Win Championships.

The main thing is he seems to have a clear vision as to what he wants for an outcome. He also found some talent along the way. The team has found players that can do special teams and also contribute on either offense or defense if needed. Ted Thompson found guys that couldn't do either and that set up the long term problem.
The return teams will be crucial this year. Good field position always helps the offense but with a new quarterback and young receivers it will be necessary this fall more than ever.

You have to go back decades to remember a year with so many draft picks. This camp is going to be very competitive with 25 draft picks and countless UDFA’s over the past two years. That will mean some talented players will be cut and the remaining will be better due to the competitive off season. Some will make the cut because they will Excel at ST’s. It’s a big part of being a winning football team, one that has been overlooked far too long. I hope Nixon stays at returning punts, he was very dynamic and fun to watch.

I will miss Crosby’s accuracy thou, he excelled even in the cold weather and in big games. That will be hard to replace and I fear we will lose some games that we wouldn’t of with him.

Just kick it out of the end zone every time and you cut down the coverage team’s chances in half of f-ing up. If your kicker can’t do that you picked the wrong kicker. The NFL rules are now set to have NO kickoff returns and no injuries so go with it!

That all well and good in September, October, and those games in domes like the 2 games a year in Detroit and Minnesota, but come November, December, and maybe January that's a tougher ask.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, I just think kicking in GB or Chicago in the Winter is an entirely different animal.

100% on kicking outside in cold weather. You could add Buffalo to that, and some others. I'm sure a guy who wasn't hungover in Physics can explain about air compression and temperature and the Ideal Gas Law or something, and I'll leave that to them, but I remember as a youte kicking a rock hard rubber coated Voit in the winter in Northern Wiscconsin, and it's a helluva lot different her in sunny Texas.

Similarly, a baseball in cold weather can send a stinger into your forearms when you hit it. I don't know about golf.

Very exciting times!

This year more than other years sure seems like most veterans are going to have to step up their game even in training camp. As DB indicated at this stage of his career he tends to pick & choose when he goes full out in training camp. Well, not for all these youngsters with all their energy, excitement, and wanting to make the team. This is good! We also have an eager QB for once that will take all the reps to work with the receivers, backs & TE's.

Just going to say......friggin Matt LF not allowing media much access to the 3-day mini-camp is really frustrating me & I want him to know it! :)

There is nothing secretive going on in mini-camp that has to be kept such a secret from the media and public. Doesn't he know/care there are many of us rabid Packer fans who want video, and to read about our newest Packers? This is when they should really provide media access to get us fans (if possible) even more jazzed and ramped up. The little vanilla day 1 mini-camp podcast by Andy was pretty non-informative because the media was limited to what they could watch.

I want to see those new TE's, WR's, and RB streaking down the field making catches over their shoulders. I want to see the defenders and their moves & athleticism. Come on Matt....get with it! :)

"" Patience truly is a virtue. ""

Yeah. We both know that......

Trying to put myself in Coach LaFleur's shoes, I can see why he's not a fan of a bunch of media poking around. He's got a job to do, and that's to build a team that has some pretty significant turnover in the offseason. Rodgers, Lazard, Lowry, Lewis,....these guys had been around for a long time.

He's going to have to rely on some youngsters contributing, and he's damn well going to want to avoid starting the season the way we've started the last two. He wants to minimize the distraction and put everybody's focus on what is going to happen, not what has happened, and the best way is to keep the media away.

I expect our STs to be significantly improved for 2023. The only area I have some hesitation with is our place kicker, whoever that will be. Crosby has been a great place kicker for the Packers especially in cold weather games. Kicking FGs and PATs in Green Bay from November on is a big challenge considering the cold, the wind and the wet weather conditions.

I would be fine if the Packers brought 3 kickers into camp this year. If all else fails I'm hoping that Crosby does not get a call from another team first if it turns out that we need to bring him back. Thanks, Since '61

RB stood alone last season as the Packers most impactful coach. This is possible when teams are willing to pay a premium for top level coaches - which generally the FO has been loathe to do. However, the Packers STs had been so historically bad - that Murphy had to deviate (reluctantly) from his practice of hiring middling, unproven or re-cycled coaches - usually below market price(s).

It appears to me that Bisaccia is the alpha male on the coaching staff - which is fine - because MLF or JB are certainly not. I posit that every coaching staff requires one alpha male. Now MLF seems OK with this as he can then concentrate on what he knows and likes the most - being an OC (but paid as an HC). As for Joe Barry, he is practically a persona non grata - which may create a leadership void - that RB could help fill.

Because of RB I expect to see a more comfortable and confident MLF this year. While Joe Barry - someone on a shorter leash - perhaps looking over his shoulder - from time-to-time. Thus making it a very interesting and potentially eventful year.

Alberta, I love ya, and understand how everybody here wants to readily jump all in on this:
“As for Joe Barry, he is practically a persona non grata - which may create a leadership void…”

But, is there one shred of truth to this?

It’s a popular bugle call, with no documented substance, other than what appears to be a disgruntled Jerry Gray. AND some stuff WE ALL SAW happen on the field that made no sense… to us.

Maybe it made sense to Barry & LaFleur & Gutekunst. It’s possible they were evaluating their own players trying different things our last 5 games. Might explain all that zone coverage, with big cushions and no blitzing.

WE WERE 4-8. Not unreasonable to think they did that under such conditions.

Maybe his players like Barry.

Maybe they want to play for Barry.

Maybe Barry was just a number of key pieces away from being able to run his D concepts/scheme.

Maybe they’re all just idiots.

I do not believe that last bit for one second.

I am intrigued with the Defense this year - guided by the hand of Barry - who has never made it this far as a DC. My "persona non grata" comment was made from a fan's perspective. I don't expect that Barry will be an easy out - being a pal of MLF and Murphy's brilliant hire. Still, should he entirely revert to his 0-16 form (as the the Lion's DC) - I expect that RB will be the safety net for the D. Actually, I'm thinking/hoping that Bisaccia will have some input into the weekly defensive game plan - giving me some optimism that the D may be decent this year. Even with Barry.

With all the great DC candidates available, how MLF did not take the opportunity to improve his underperforming D with 7 (now 8!) first rounders is disappointing.

Maybe realized he is chained to Joe Barry caused him to listen to others and relent a bit...and direct his Assistant HC to assist with daily Defensive game planning. Bicassia seems very good identifying and using player talents. I think he also has ability to see the big picture for the team.

I note one of the last best defenses Capers coached was when it struggled early in the season and McCarthy began spending a lot of his time with the D. It was the year MM moved CMIII to MLB...and Clay played well there. Maybe Rich can similarly help.
